his mate parks down by the neighbours & does the homie walk down my driveway. Gives the bike a 2 sec glance then sez "have you got a helmet so I take it for a ride?" so I ask to see a drivers license "ohh, sorry I forgot to bring it", then advise him that he should have his own helmet as most bikers dont let anyone else wear theirs & Ill need to see a license first anyway. By this stage theres no way in hell he's getting to bugger off with my bike but Ill see how far he'll push. So he wanders out to talk to his mate & sez he couldnt find his wallet in the car (funny coz he didnt even look) & could he just take it a hundred meters or so. I reply that if his mate brings his car into my driveway & gives me the keys to his car while staying with me Ill consider it. needless to say he walked off without another word except for "F**K YOU!!" as they drove off. Funny thing is he had all that time to express his intentions towards my bottom but never told me to my face... poor wee closet homo :)

Awesome story, and good on you for giving him the ass holes.

Sounds to me like he was going to nick it, or couldn't even ride.

Should have taken down the cars reg and make a po po call to let them know theres two guys fishing for bikes!

Fuck me, most bikers don't even let others try their bike unless they are really close friends!

What a douche bag.

bwahaha thats awesome!

What a moron first rule of test riding is turn up with gear & license in hand, be prepared to hand over your own keys while doing doing so.

What a loser. Good thing you had the common sense not to let the fool ride away. People don't like to be judged on appearances, but when they present themselves as dodgy losers, what else do they expect.
On the other hand, if someone turns up with a helmet, gear, a licence, and a good attitude, you're more than happy to let them test ride, if you're selling.

Guy like that I'd insist on payment in full in cash before even letting him touch the bike.

Also I agree with the ones saying get the plate. Chances are they'll try that on more than one person.
Put out the word to keep an eye out for these characters.

but that probably hot too & theres really nothing the cops could do anywayor have time to do seeing as theyre judged on fines (read $$$) quota these days

So i guess the key is to find some bike gear, steal a nice flash car to suit said flash bike and leave the stolen car as collateral to steal the bike, if one was that way inclined of course.

Good on ya for not letting them near it without ID, i believe that is the key component to being able to prosecute the aholes if they are dodgy.

lol, yeah all that to steal a 1987 Katana... I'm not saying it wouldn't be worth the effort mind... But the time spent getting ready for the heist you could earn the money to buy it ;)

If anyone wants to take your bike for a "test ride", take a photograph of them first. Everyone has a cellphone and a large percentage have a camera...

Make references to "Crimewatch" or "Police 10-7" if they do not re-appear and then see if they are still keen.

Yep, double that. I'll wager that they'll be back for another "look" while you're not around. Their behaviour speaks pretty much for itself e.g. no helmet, no licence.....(cough cough). Unfortunately suggestions to inform the police probably will be met with minimal interest as nothing actually happened to you or your bike. Sad, but the police often seem to be too busy to take information like this on board for future reference.

I've always taken my cages to prospective test drivers. Either their place or somewhere neutral so there's no chance of my place being cased.

Gas stations are always good so you have their rego on camera :)

Call me paranoid but I hate random people coming to my house. Having seen the Trademe forums I'm even more sure of that now.

There is only one loser here, one who has given the address and location of a bike to a complete stranger, one apparently who is not even a genuine buyer

How are you supposed to sell a bike without telling people where to come see it?

Duke girl
12th January 2009, 08:45
Well done whoosh you did everything right with making sure your bike wasn't going to be stolen and it always pays to stand your ground when low life idiots think that they can come onto your property and try pulling the wool over your eyes. You would probably find that the vehicle they were in was stolen. Like you said if the were genuine guys they would have had their own helmet plus his licence on him. Its so hard these days to put trust into people you dont know but protecting your property is the most important thing. Make sure that if anyone is going to take your bike out for a test ride that you go with them. Trust no one.

That's why you meet them somewhere other than where the bike is stored. :D

I would never buy a bike off someone if they asked to meet me somewhere other then where they live...that just reaks of stolen/dodgy/etc seller.

Goes both ways...

I guess it depends on the bike a bit. If I was looking at a $30,000 bike I wouldn't be offended if I couldn't go to the person's house. After all, everyone knows a bike of that value is probably desirable to thieves so you can forgive the person for wanting to protect it.

But all you need is the rego number and you can find out their address anyway... I would be very suspicious of someone trying to sell an expensive bike from a supermarket car park. I would do as the OP has done - give them my address to view the bike, then be very cautious about them.

had an idiot lodger a few years ago who was selling his bike

he gave the address out to everybody who phoned up

a couple of days later the garage was broken into and his bike was stolen

most responsible people will understand peoples reluctance to give out address details

and a lot of people with decent collectable or valuable vehicles register them at another convienient address to prevent the address being traced

I dunno about anyone else, but I don't trust any cunt. So If selling a bike;

1. Make clear in advert "Cash in hand before test riding".
2. Meet in a neutral place for testride (i.e local servo).
3. Get a mate or yor missus to come along with their car and wait with you.
4. View liscence and jott down the card number, plus the rego of the vehicle he turns up in.
5. He uses his own gear.

That way if his caddy tests end badly, you can just smile and drive away

So I take it from these rules....... females are not allowed to test ride at all ;)

When I bought Bobby, I didn't have any gear. Guys stuff fitted me perfect.
I gave him 10$ for a bus ride to get home (Mt. Wellington or sommat), and he gave me his gloves. Nice guy.

It was also my pleasure to teach him how to;
(1.) Hold the testers licence and anything else you can while they're riding it, and
(2.), To not act so shocked when I hand you 4k while I ride your bike, silly.

Fuck I can still remember my grin :Punk:

ANYWAY

NO CASH IN HAND, NO RIDE.
The licence thing really is your opinion, but if there's a chance you're gonna be out of pocket at any point... Tisk tisk.
Crashes it, you get money.
Steals it, you get money.
Agrees to buy it, you get that money he gave you. No room for bartering, ya tightassed customer! Unless, of course, it is founded...

Its amazing that some people have the brains to behave that way, particularly when it comes to "test driving" a bike, or any vehicle for that matter.

Why did they invent dumb people???
I guess to balance the rest of (us/u+i) the more intelligent species in this world.
