Or you could just come for a 3 day weekend of riding up North, given that is aniversery weekend

Hmm, funds won't allow me to get away for an overnighter unfortunately.
Will have to think of a route anyway, but if people do wanna do a 3 day tour i'm quite happy to wait for a few more weeks.

I can't make it Saturday now - sorry guys. Seeing as attendance for tomorrow looks piss poor anyways why don't we try for another weekend that suits everyone? There are enough Street Triple owners for a reasonable rally it's just a matter of having enough notice, not clashing with Triumph club rides and contacting everyone. Sunday's are usually best for me.

Anyone do any longish trips on their Triple - is the GEL seat necessary for a 300-400k trip, or is your bum still alive after that sort of distance?
Completely seperate topic, but I'm looking at buying a 2nd hand unit, came in Nov 07 - is there a difference between 08 and 09 models?
AND, why the #$#$#@! are we getting so ripped off for accessories, there is around a 45% premium on Triumph accessories between UK posted prices and NZ...

1st February 2009, 20:42
I've done a couple of 500 km trips. It's okay comfortwise for me at 85 kg but I have noticed it has become slightly worse over time (I think the foam has compressed somewhat).
Triumph accessories are fuggin expensive sad but true. Check out other international suppliers through forums like:
www.triumphrat.net/street-triple-forum
www.675.net/
www.street-triple.co.uk/
And try ebay
There were no changes at all between 07 and 08. I am 99% sure the stock 09Street Triple is unchanged also.

the longest trip I have done on mine in a day is somewhere round 400km and I found it quite sore on the backside. Other than that wasn't too bad. I guess I will find out at end of the month what long riding is like as I am planning a weeks riding round the North Island.

Hows that fancypants suspension working out for ya short-circuit?
Brilliant plain and simple with no exaggeration. If you have to sell your Granny to do it then you need to...Give that engine and chassis the suspension that Triumph deprived it of!!!
At the front the forks which were sprung way too soft now have no dive on hard braking, and due to the revalving and digressive shim stack are absorbing everything I throw at them. Consequently it is far more assured steering, there is a lot more "feel" when brakes and the snatchyness in the throttle is sorted. I know the R model has the Nissin four pot calipers but the two pots have more than enough bite with the front end suspension sorted.
The Ohlins rear is what you'd expect - the best. Even the missus (parttime pillion/fulltime household bean counter) has to begrudgingly admit it's like a different bike. No more bottoming out, harshhess, lack of wheel contact/traction from the road and no squat when accelerating out of a corner hard. The bike which already did already carve is now so much more assured in corners and feels glued Absolutely planted. My rear end is slightly higher in a more aggressive riding position
I believe that the $2880 on the stock model was the right option rather than going for the R model: I've still got all the mods I did originally, I don't have a naff colour scheme or matt paint to try to maintain and my suspension is top-notch, rebuildable and taylored for me (not merely adequate and adjustable).
I'd like to thank Norm Cobb at Suspension Tech Ellerslie for doing such a fantastic job - starting around midday and working through till 7.30pm that night to have it done same day. He spent several hours with me discussing the various options including considering the upgrade to R model, Daytona front end conversion etc. Answered all my questions and dumbed down it down so as to make it comprehendable to one so mechanically challenged.
So there - do what you need to...sell you Granny, your ass, rob a bank, whatever it takes Gubb. You'll never stop smiling

Thanks for feedback.
I went around to have a look, there was some scratches on gear box casing, the pegs and handlebars were scratched, and right hand side indicator was cracked.
He'd only had it for a few months and had only done about 400k himself.
"So, this bike has never been dropped, fallen over etc?"
"No"
"Looks like someone was pretty sloppy with it"
"Yeah, never been dropped"
(or something like that).
Anyway rang Holeshot to ask if they had any service history on it, and luckily the guy remembered and said the seller had been in sometime before to buy a new indicator lens as it had fallen over in the driveway. Dodgy lying fekker.
It has been sold though...
So, now I'm buying new, and am getting pretty confused about whether to get the standard or the R.
WIll be:
* Day tripping (75%)
* Long trip (20%)
* Track day
So, getting hung up on the suspension/handling differences.
Can someone just tell me what to do!
I can get a new black one now, or wait a month for a R. Don't want the ride to be too stiff for road use, but a lot of people are ugrading their suspension for a reason right?
Do I get the standard, get a bit of experience (I've only been riding for about 13months), and then do an upgrade like Short Circuit - just can't decide, and since no-one has a demo
model R I have no idea what the difference feels like.
Gubb
7th February 2009, 21:17
Get the base model, spend the extra coin you save on an Ohlins unit, and you'll end up with something that is better than the R model, for less moolah.
TimothyS
8th February 2009, 08:11
Err, wouldn't replacing front and back be a wee bit more than $2k? I've seen $2800 mentioned above.
Plus you do get the brakes on the R to better match the upgraded handling.
And call me fruity, but I like the Matt Graphite colour scheme.

8th February 2009, 08:50
If you actually do a lot of track then I'd say get the R - but then I'd suggest that the R is inferior as a track bike to the Daytona.
The brake upgrade will only be an advantage to you for serious track time - where you are accelerating and braking hard out for significant periods of time (you won't experience brake fade etc). Otherwise they can actually cause less experienced riders grief - in a hairy situation grabbing a handful and going for a header over handlebars is not much fun by all accounts.
Even with the suspension on the R the upgrade is still on the cards - it's not hard to get a daytona shock on ebay cause all the guys on Daytonas have found their Daytona shock though adjustable, is still not great. You'll also need to replace it after a while.
In the front while adjustment would be nice, with a reshim, revalve and springs you'll get something much more suitable for your purposes.
Ring Norm Cobb at Suspension Tech and ask him about so called "fully adjustable suspension". He'll tell you it's a misnomer and it's not much use having a clicker if your internals are still shit to start with and the ride is harsh as buggery
Ideal would be buy the R (extra two grand) have the adjustment and then do the $3000 upgrade on top of that.
Oh and with the paint - touch ups are out of the question, stone chips are there for good, the matte will go shiny on contact areas etc.
Start with a good ride on the base model, then speak to Norm or Robert Taylor about your concerns. The suspension on the base model is a compromise but it's not dire - but don't be conned into thinking that the R will be as good as a custom suspension upgrade

Thanks guys for good advice, I'll get the standard black, and when I'm ready will upgrade bits. I know I'm not ready to push the bike to its limits anytime soon.
On that basis, would be keen to hook up with owners for rides soon.
One more thing, is it worth getting belly pan, so far I've decided on gel seat and fly screen/visor. Pan does give the bike a slightly racier/smoother look.

Well, I've got it, as I write this post I'm looking at it in the garage via the dedicated camera I installed this morning so I can look at it over the net anytime :shifty:...
Rode up to Puhoi via new motorway extension and back, and did it like a big time nana.
Definitely a good idea to get the gel seat if it works as expected, my ass was a bit tender at the end of the ride on the standard.
Bike sounds great, even at the low revs I'm supposed to stick to while I break it in, and man you can feel the difference in nimbleness over the GSX650F. I think the Suz would still be more comfortable for long trips though..
Anyone find their seat gets a bit warm, or is it just this weather - don't think the Suz seat gets a noticably heated.
Bit of a bugger there's no fuel gauge, but I guess it's easy enough to pop the cap and have a look.

Give you arse a few weeks to acclimatise - both to the feel of it and the heat (there is a wee bit of heat transfer which you notice more in the summer).
You've got a 5 litre reserve which I'd trust for 50 kms after your fuel light comes on. I usually get around 200km of spirited riding before my fuel light but
I've just done pipes, K&N and tune so will monitor comsumption again.
Good luck restraining yourself over break in period

Turning circle is shit under 5km/hour.... bit of a pain when moving around a tight space like a garage or parking spot. Over 5km/hr the triple's cornering ability is fantastic :)

Fantastic little bike, really enjoy riding it, it was a good idea not to get the R as it would have been a waste for now.
Did a 350k round trip to Coromandel Town today.
The trip there was really nana-ish, I seem to have lost a little confidence after having come off the Suz a couple months back on some oil/rain - now everything looks like oil on the road :baby: (I've only had my full for 5 months).
Trip back was better, started getting a handle on my lines and generally was less of a pussy, big thanks to a couple of guys on sportbikes ahead of me for the visual tips. It will be worth spending a few $$ on doing an advanced course with someone like RiderSkills sooner than later.
Bike wise, agree with other posters:
* Poor steering lock for (very) low speed turns, not a major issue
* Seat is an arse killer :spanking: Both the standard and gel, perhaps my roids aren't helping though.. hoping the gel seat softens up a bit over time, otherwise I'm going to have to go custom.
