View Full Version : Gremlin... This is your life!

Well as some people know, Gremlin and I did a two week riding tour of the Mainland (South Island).

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Rarely have I spent so much time in the company of one person. You really start to get to know the foibles, the idiosyncratic ways, the peculiar habits and traits of the other person.

What can I say about Gremlin?

He is first and foremost a stand up guy. He is definitely one guy you would want in front of you taking the bullets. Also he has an amazing sense of humor and appreciates the absurd and can make astounding leaps in logic.

His passion and fetish for gadget knows no bounds and he brooks no deviation from hallowed ideas he enshrines. Givi boxes. Pannier racks. Laptops. Camera gear that is worth more than some bikes.

His itinerant lifestyle as an IT professional (read : compgeeknerd) means he is used to working late hours and sleeping in even later. This was of no small amount of frustration with me.

I am a late night owl and an early morning person. I can switch onto active status in a moments notice! When I was ready to ride at 7am, Gremlin would be ... fast asleep. He often would take his sweet time and mooch around scratching himself in his pajamas and pulling out his laptop to muse on the latest KB offerings.

At the beginning of the tour, I thought this was a temporary thing, I thought he would be charging hard into the rides and seizing the day, Carpe Diem and all that!

How wrong I was.

Below is a little expose of pictures that shows some of the myriad poses of this complex creature known as Gremlin...

Pic 1 : After 624km or so, Gremlin needed to rest his weary bones, the KTM is a dominatrix, and she punishes her earstwhile charge. A love hate relationship for sure.
Pic 2 : His stature seems so hobbit like when he is on the ground, recuperating ...
Pic 3 : Gremlin is an avid photographer, he really commits himself to a good shot and he contorts his lengthy frame to compose the picture well. Looks blardy funny to me!
Pic 4 : Gremlin is also a very intimidating figure. He cuts a subconscious rendition of the Grim Reaper in his black leathered attired. He loomed in on the poor booth worker and I can only imagine the effect he had on the poor person. Filthy biker scum eh? :oi-grr:
Pic 5 : At rest, he is a picture of modesty and innocence, it belies the apocalyptic rider he is on his katoom o'doom. A horseman of the apocalypse is he, the 6th rider that is not named!
Pic 6 : The first appearance of the laptop on the trip, we commandeered floor space need the ferry access to the vehicle deck. He needed to use the range of the wireless connection before the ferry went out of contact with netspace ... and thus civilisation to Gremlin!

This is part of the large SI tour we did, here is a link to the piccies I took from my perspective http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=90415

Now, at this stage dear reader, I guess you are wondering why I am doing such a fine rendition and expose on this towering legend of a rider.

In part and parcel it is an acknowledged tip of the helmet to Gremlin. It is also part and parcel of revenge. It is also part and parcel of the whole merchandising tie up that this SI tour and my own irreverent sense of humor also! :innocent: :devil2:

But I digress ... here I bring on more tributes to the way this rider has extended my abilities as a biker and exposed my own failures as a human being. He tested my patience, my resolve, my candour, my courage, my endurance, my self-belief, my own philosophy.

He is a maniacal and fiendish rider when he is astride his KTM. The change is like night and day. Mild mannered IT geekboy becomes a faustian creature of riding legend, an epic teller of riding stories and a spectacular vision to behold (when you aren't cleaning off bits of the local flora from yourself and your bike when you are riding behind him! :pinch:)

I was nonplussed when I was confronted with the paradox that is Gremlin. Off the bike, out of his gear he is slow as wet wigs, in fact, a sloth that is using crutches is faster than him! He would set his alarm for 8am. When it went off he would roll over and deactivate it and roll back to sleep.

Even with me pouncing on him, doing infamous cat paw massage techniques, musical numbers and other early morning person stuff would not rouse him! Truly amazing.

But once he has donned his riding gear, it is a completely different scenario. The KTM would roar off into the distance and leave me flabbergasted. Corners eaten in twists of the throttle, tight curves spanked hard by his disdain for its complexities of physics. Every normal thing you expect is blown asunder by his dextrous handling of his chosen ride.

Pic 1 : Here would be a common sight on the trip, Gremlin flat out on his back snoozing away, to be fair this time he had hardly any sleep in the past 48 hours, I took this as a great sign of his riding endurance, at last, someone to rival my own stature as a pootler par excellence. How soon I was to be abused of that :weep:

Pic 2 : The lady was quite amused seeing him slumber, she said he looked quite cute when he was asleep! (I never told him this until now in this thread!)

Pic 3 : The obvious work place of an IT professional. The bed, talk about your telecommunting! This was our 2nd day in the SI, waking up, he logs on immediately! I was packed by this stage.

Pic 4 : In Nelson, Gremlin doing what Gremlin does best when he is off his Katoom o'doom. Is that a laptop I espy? Gasp! Shock! Horror!

Pic 5 : Ladies, how can you not resist this fabulous representation of man meat? Guys, he does ride a Honda too you know! He swings it both ways! Line up line up!

Pic 6 : Serious kudos in Hokitika, looking like a serious IT professional, with turtleneck and a countenance that is hard at work ... on minesweeper or solitaire! This shot was just before some Israelian girls did a WWF rendition slamming into the couch!

I guess in the best traditions of "This is your life" type programs I had to dig up lots of trash and papparazzi type tidbits.

Did you know ...

Gremlin has a sweet tooth? He is like Madbikeboy in his cravings for fine sweet things ... if you want to win him over, toss baked goods and sugary confectionary things at him!

Did you know ..

He drinks blue powerade due to his attendance to a Grand Challenge and couldn't decide on a taste he liked? He chose blue and its been blue powerade ever since! I always like trying new things and always get new flavors. Consistent is this boy!

Did you know ...

He likes to pick insects off his helmet by dabbing it with his finger and then flicking it disdainfully off to the side in the wind?

Did you know ...

He gets distracted by hawt chicky babes and it is the only thing that will make him take a bad line into a 35kph corner in Kaiteriteri beach!

Pic 1 : Creepy innit being with gijoe1313, but as you know, the early bird gets the worm ... and in this case isn't he so cute? Awww diddums! by the way, this is the bed in Hokitika where he left a Gremlin sized hole in the mattress, it was so soft I kid you not! He had to roll out of the bed to get up!

Pic 2 : This is in Franz Josef. As you can see he has taken over the table, ready to do battle and find any unguarded networks to mooch connections off! Such a warrior off and on his bike!

Pic 3 : The matrix effect I was going for! Anyway note the attire, casual shirt, cargo pants, bare feet ... this is the suit du jour for IT professionals apparently. Better than zeocen who does it only in his panties! Now that's enough to put you off your dinner!

Pic 4 : Fox Glacier. They talk about a red garbed camo ninja ... here is the deathknight level 75 version with Gotterdammerung Steed of Slaying with Unholy Pipes of Decibel Destruction. When people see me, they know I can't be serious. With Gremlin, he puts the intimidation into the little people. :chase:

Pic 5 : Too much sweet loving for his bitch mistress dominatrix Katoom o'doom. I blame it on his Honda thing he has going as well.

Pic 6 : FPS - KiwiBiker Killer ... I selected F1 and got the standard knife. Gremlin has somehow morphed into Kevin Spacey.

Well, ladles and jellyspoons, I come before you to stand behind you, to tell you more of something I know nothing about! (with apologies to Spike Milligan)

This nebulous character known as Gremlin is a complicated Freudian mish-mash of contradictions, oxymorons and emphatic communion. Often I would be :gob: and :sweatdrop and :eek5: and  and :angry2: with this fellow.

On one hand he says the most logical and sensible thing. The next second he sounds like a schizophrenic axe-wielding homicidal maniac! (with apologies to Alexi Sayle in the Young Ones)

He started to delineate two parts of his character. His real name persona and the persona known as Gremlin. He would refer to himself in the 3rd person...

For example ...

"Gremlin is responsible for these things, (name withheld) is not in at the moment and will be with you shortly..."

"Gremlin is much amused by this and is unrepentant for your suffering ..."

"Gremlin thinks this is a good idea ..."

Run away when he is like this, no good came of it and in fact increased the weirdness index that we came across!

Pic 1 : At Gillespie beach, Gremlin took shots of the gravel road, but insisted none be taken of him, I guess this thread has blown that request away!

Pic 2 : In bed at Franz Josef, the usual shot I took - this time he managed to get some of me doing my morning surfing exercises! Maybe he will post them in revenge soon for this thread!

Pic 3 : Here is a scary shot. When I came down to get stuff ready for riding and to clean my Big Ol'Hornet it looked like someone had decapitated Gremlin and left the head there! I knew it wasn't me as much as I would love to! In bed in the garage of McJim, Invercargill.

Pic 4 : Gremlin and Jantar doing what they do best, playing with gadgets galore. GPS, texting and other what nots!

Pic 5 : In Invercargill, this is the reservoir dogs shot. Attitude from Gremlin at its finest. Notice his cycling pants and the bicycles in the background. Yes, it is true, Gremlin used to be a pushie and he never let anyone else know about it! McJim and him had a lot to talk about shitmanos and other cycling idioms.

Pic 6 : Wanaka with an Angel on his bed. See the petulant look on his face once he realised I was dare taking a picture of him! :cold: Angel of course is a true trooper and was waiting for Gremlin to log on! Searching for unsecured networks of course is our Gremlin!

Well folks, its time to wrap up this wing ding extravaganza of character buildup and assassination!

Gremlin is a cool young guy. He's hip, he's cool, he's an ultra nerd. He rides like a bat out of hell with the devils and demons pursuing him. He can loft his KTM to do things not in the design manual and he is ultra confident in his abilities. Very little is Gremlin not able to do.

He has strong definite ideas, is able to lead and also to follow, can make snap decisions and yet also mull over them. A steadfast nature, loyal, patient, able to be serious and concentrate over long periods of time. Wicked sense of humor and as I have said before, someone you know would be there on the firing line. He makes a bigger target and thus attracts more fire. Good for me.

Pic 1 : Hanmer Springs. Notice the fine figure he cuts beneath the linen. Such a dashing young man, why does he have to have equipment share the bed instead of a nubile young lady who caters to his every whim? I guess thats what he's dreaming about when he snuffles and snurfs in his sleep!

Pic 2 : Oh! What is this? Little raccoon (tanuki in japanese) is pouncing on sleeping Gremlin! Aiya! Kawaii desu ne!

Pic 3 : At McJim castle, looking for all the world like a hobbit, an optical illusion that reduces the cloud soaring stature of Gremlin to a mere mortal. Why am I not surprised he is looking at a computer screen? :slap:

Gremlin is a swell guy, as swell as can be -
He zooms around on his katoom o'doom
chopping up grass, killing lichen and felling trees.

His black leathered attire, dressed to impress
in truth, he is humble, sugar and spice
But a nerd to the core, I do confess!

He rides his KTM hard to the core,
banking left, leaning right, forging ahead -
but waking up early is still such a chore!

The times he slows down is few and far between,
displays of riding prowess an ubermenschen zeitgeist,
his perchance for KTM mayhem has to be seen!

He said he wants to be incognito, not known well
but heck, gosh golly this cannot be kept secret
of his riding ability and legend I shall tell!

So one day if perhaps you hear something loud,
Its best to look in your mirror, go to the left
and there you will see Gremlin, doing KTM proud!

Eye for an eye, and the world goes blind... Well, stuff the world and all that, tis gijoe we really care about :girlfight:

I'm not going to spout on about his behaviour, we all know he's nutty. The lift doesn't reach the top floor, he's a few sandwiches short of a picnic, page short of a book (I steal this from karla), beer short of a sixpack.

Anyway, its not going to make him any more visible to the public than he already is... I LIKED my anonymity :weep:

Pic 1: noshing down on a pie... I won't number the pie, I don't have enough fingers for all the pies he ate, so a tally is impossible.

Pic 2: Scaring people... he did that a lot. This isn't a posed shot. He walked all the way around Pancake Rocks like this. Everyone looked at least twice at him

Pic 3: Child like antics... the scary part is, he put in a lot of effort for that shot. No, he isn't constipated... don't care either way

Pic 4: In between the complaining about lack of riding and blaming me for things, here he is, doing what he does best. This time the complaint is about how small he feels. (a likely story)

Gremlin
17th January 2009, 03:13
Its a little scary when photos appear on your camera, or you download a copy of his shots from his camera, to be on the safe side.

Nice way to find out that the guy you are spending 13 days with, in close quarters, has some secret crush on you, and photographs you while you are sleeping :eek5:

And no, I didn't know the lady said I was cute... I was actually sleeping. I finished the backlog of work I had to do at 0030 on New Years Day. Packed until 0330, had a shower, breakfast, and left home at 0430. Rode 620km to Wellington, then Piecock hill, and napped for 20 min on the ferry.

Yes, I know, he rides a honda, I should have expected it, but those kb jokes are just jokes... yeh? no?

Pic 1: A sample of a pic I had no idea existed... until I saw it.

Pic 2: Angel having fun

Pic 3: You might find this highly amusing... this was sorta the par for the course, I wasn't even surprised :weird:

Pic 4: At this point, I still didn't know pic 1 existed... how fitting... and tempting

Gremlin
17th January 2009, 03:21
Yes... I had to google how to spell the title, bar the flecks on the e's, I actually had it right anyway.

If you thought he was weird... you'd be right.

After being woken at some stupid hour on a monday morning (07 something) this weird creature proceeded to do some sort of weird dance. Having only just woken up, and now knowing about the existence of some of the sleeping shots, this sequence in pics 1-4 can only be described as disturbing. :gob:

Pic 5: The video is in the ride report thread, and disturbingly, its quieter than real life. As McJim zoomed in, gijoe became all camera shy, and shut up for possibly the first and only time while sleeping on the trip. Indeed, when reviewing the video, we couldn't hear the video sound over the real thing.

Now, don't be worried. This sleeping shot is only revenge for his actions. I'm only a part time honda rider, not a fully fledged homo. :sunny:

Did you know ...

He gets distracted by hawt chicky babes and it is the only thing that will make him take a bad line into a 35kph corner in Kaiteriteri beach!
It was Collingwood...

The funniest part was, I saw the corner coming, meh, no big deal. As I prepare to enter it, I spies bikini clad chicks out of the corner of my eye. Thoughts of corners vanish from my immediate thoughts as I try to err... assess the situation.

Returning to the task at hand, suddenly the corner is infinitely more involved than I remembered half a second ago, and the task at hand is more complex as it now involves barriers, gravel and such like. While wrangling the bike back under control, I still wanted another shot to view the scenery, but alas, they were over my shoulder and rapidly growing smaller :weep:

It should also be pointed out that neither gijoe nor I drink. Yes, by natural extension this means this entire trip, along with the pictures were from a completely sober state.

Perhaps I shouldn't have mentioned this... we're now firmly perceived to be in the nuthouse. :weird:

Heck, if you were worried about never making an arse of yourself, you'd be one stick in the mud! :oi-grr:

This lothario of the highways never stops, he is a charmer, a scoundrel and above all a biker ... the other day I was brusquely asked that I should join him and his pillion passenger on a ride to Kaiaua.

I made several guesses about his ride and he got chafed that I was obviously quoting all the rides that couldn't be given to him from Botany Honda! :devil2:

I thought it would be a cruiser or a Gold Wing.

So when he gets over to my casa, he looked incongruous on the piece of ironmongery he got given for a loaner! :msn-wink:

Pic 1 : A new look for the lad

Pic 2 : Dear ol'mum and son spending quality time together! I was dead impressed!

Pic 3 : Ladies! Girls! How can you not love a hunka hunka burning chunk of a man like this? Get it while its hot!

I know where you live... your time is like sand through an hour glass :spanking:

Favouritism huh? Same bike goes in for service... very different loaners. You get a CB1000R, a known pootler... I get an 1800cc (they even make bikes this fricken big?!?!) CRUISER. Hell, the biggest thing I had ridden previously was a Blackbird, at a relatively paltry 1100cc...

Mum had had a shot at being pillion on the blackbird around the suburbs, her first in 20+ years, and quite liked it. Since I had this monster for a few hours on a Saturday, I offered her another pillion, this time to kaiaua, knowing it would be good for pillions, and wanting to see what its like.

Well, it decks out rather easily (but I was warned). Tipping into a corner, it decks out prior to the apex, and the only thing I could do was lift my foot, and feel the peg fold up some more  The 1800cc could certainly shift it along. I was rather doubtful of any ability to overtake, but found myself pleasantly wafting past cars quite quickly, which was good, because I wasn't following cars around  It was rather soft, evidently not set up for pillion (or perhaps not my riding and pillion) so it was rather bouncy and wallowed a lot.

On the whole tho, excellent for pillions, and fine for cruising. Nice note to the exhaust with the Vance and Hines too.

Then Botany Honda called while at Kaiaua... and Danny wanted his cruiser back, since he was taking his missus on it. He even told me to ride it faster to get it back. Even worse, I actually chose straighter roads to get it back... What happened? :crybaby:

Had to drop the cruiser off quick sticks, so Mum had the back of the hornet home, and didn't find it as comfortable. On the whole, it sounds like she enjoyed it a lot, so always good for pillions to enjoy it.

Ignore GiJoe... he's getting set up for shackles, and doesn't seem to appreciate my jokes about his lack of freedom, vs my total freedom.

Jealous sad little boy he is...

Spotted in an unlikely location, the infamous Gremlin was discovered on a forecourt filling his katoom o'doom with go gas!

The paparazzi photogs quickly got some quick snaps off ... as you can see the man is a tour de force of intimidation on his destrier of darkness!

But lo! Look what transpired ... duck waddling his ride to the front of the doors so he can pay for the fuel!? :gob:

Gremlin, you are truly an inspiration to all aspiring riders out there ... but what the hell! :slap: :thud:

For coolness in the 1st pic ... he's so cool, that water would freeze around him, the 2nd pic? Any more lame and we would have to shoot him to put him out of his misery, that's what happens to lame horses! :pinch:

Yes! That's right! In an exclusive c/o gijoe1313 paparazzi stalking productions, updated photos of that delicious man-meat zeitgeist of riding!

Gremlin was recently spotted in the daring demi-monde of the Coromandel, doing the "Coro" so to speak! He was spotted with a tarty bit of Scottish skirt and was all blase about it.

The man is close to being a messiah of two wheeled machines as reports of his artful handling in the close confines of the Coro loop came through, things such as "pegging it" was bandied about - at one stage, this fearless reporter saw him roaring two-up at speed behind him!

I dare say Gremlin is back, he's loud, he's brash! He is the one! The Only! Gremlin!

Pic 1 : So tres chic in his half protector, green is the new black this year darlings! He is such an advant-garde trendsetter!
Pic 2 : Gremlin demonstrates how he won the limbo dancing fiasco contest of '88. Notice the inclination of his head due to the weight of his ego pulling it backwards as an unfair advantage to the hoi polloi who were in competition with him. Badger8 was so astounded by this bravura display his head exploded from the awesomeness! (Picture cropped to avoid the gratuitous blood)

You can't hide how you really feel about each other. It's cool, I understand that having matching Hornets brings out the Brokeback in you both and that I'm gremlin's last stab at heterosexuality :)

As long as I don't have to watch and you wash afterwards then it's fine...

The venerable and most worthy Gremlin was last seen making his rounds on this delightful contraption (sans attractive accessory of course!)

Well last night, Zapf and I were mercilessly cutting his ideas and general ownership of his poor suffering Katie (the katoom of doom). The amount of money he has spent ... on just fixing the poor thing staggers the imagination!

The sum costs and operating expenses and other gadgets of ALL my bikes, is less than what he has ploughed into his beloved KTM! :gob:

Admittidely, Gremlin is unique in the way he rides and the amount of stress and strain he inflicts on his motorcycle. It is not a matter of IF things break, but WHEN they will!

Gremlin by name, gremlin by nature!

On the other hand, it has been an entertaining look at how extreme a rider will go for their ride!

Today Wichard from Botany Honda informed me that a certain miscreant was trying to tamper with the collection of a new CB1000R Predator today! :shit:

It transpires a certain Gremlin was saying things to the effect of :

"there's something wrong with it.."
"can't be picked up until next week..."
"can only be ridden in daylight on a clear, non cloudy day..."

I guess that a lonely, misunderstood little biker boy resides under all that leather and cordura ... may gremlin fine peace with himself and discover how to live a life of serenity!

Bollocks.

Gremlin by name, gremlin by nature is what I have always said!

Gremlin is doing a little ride,
trying to get into his GC stride,
To Napier he did go,
knocking at MSTRS's abode -
to gijoe1313 he did txt
Ha! Bollocks to you! Next!
With no small aplomb I replied
"Don't break anything inside"
Gremlin is now again on his bike -
trying to outdo me and skite!

(Gremlin is trying to get ride fit for his upcoming challenge, which even I would hesitate to attempt!)

The KTM did roar
He arrived at our door
Then out to the shed
Did we both head
The vagaries of said laptop
Had him scratching his mop
Until he said "Fack!"
"We'll have to use MAC"
Change it he did
And problems were rid
No bed nor vittles required
Into the night he retired
To finish his tour grand
He returned to Auckland

Oh wherefore thou art oh germanic steed,
noble in design and grand in specifications -
beholden to a rider that knows no fear,
milage, petrol and routes on which he feeds.

Down deep south, she was flown majestically,
with great aplomb she graced a field true,
Only her great heart kept beating to tsk tsk back
and back to the north she was rode.

So with some time to pass, she shall be anew
ridden to pastures real, and hopefully the bill
for this airborne fun, shall not break the till!
But Gremlin's nature will always shine through ...:violin:
