Side-mounted number plates

Yes I did a quick search before I posted this - what's really happening out there - seems to be no consistent application. I was of the understanding that they are not allowed casue ya can't see them from bothe sides. BUT it seem a fair number of bikes are passing compliance with them. What gives?

My bike plate is mounted on the side and is visible from a 45 degree angle which I understand is the criteria for whether it is legal or not. as the bike has gone through LVVTA and a number of wofs ok I reckon the law will have a hard time sticking me with a ticket.

Mind you, when I went for my last wof I was told that my bike had been reported by an LVVTA assessor to Land Transport for having a side mounted American style number plate and that as such it shouldn't be issued with a wof. The guy issuing the wof laughed at Land Transport and put them right that it had already gone through LVVTA successfully so what was the problem and that LVVTA need to get their act together. It would seem from the complaint that even LVVTA can't decide amongst themselves or that the person reporting me was having a bad day and hadn't been getting any sex for some time so he decided to take some sh*t out on someone else!

You need to find another tester for your wof, that is crazy.

Anyone else here have a sidemount plate,where the plate is vertical (ie on its side) and not horizontal ( the way most plates are attached) ?

As luck would have it, I got pulled over today by a cop car. Nice chat with the guys in blue, turns out they couldn't see my reg or wof (as it is on the reverse side of the number plate and not visible from behind the bike) and the number plate was a bit dirty so I was told to clean it, which I did immediately.

After a good poke around the bike - no ticket and no comment about the side mounted number plate (which is illuminated via a cats eye light with an LED inside) :2thumbsup.

I suspect couldn't give one means 'couldn't give a shit' so long as it was illuminated :D

I've just scored a horizontial side mounted # plate for my Harley ( the USA version of my bike comes out standard with em ) The #plate itself is alot smaller than our ones, its lcd lit...I've seen other bikes like mine with hem and passed a warrant ok. I'll let you know how I go once its fitted.

Ive seen a few bikes with the smaller plates,always wondered where the hell they get them,they certainly were not just cutdown normal size ones.

Chap at work has done it with just a white painted alloy plate with the numbers/letters stuck on. Fuzzy wuzzies don't seem too worried. Current plates are so fimsy anyway I've found they usually need reinforcing, unlike the old black/silver ones of days gone by.

Radical Choppers made mine for $40, metal backed, reflective front with black printed letters/numbers. They scanned my original plate.

The pic in USA-Vtwins profile of the spunky sporty is why they get excited - the left side mounted plate is not at all visible in that picture. Sounds like some pass them some do not.
