your about to get 6 people- usually the same 6, tell you to use the search function.......

I'll be helpful however- I use "chain wax". Sticks well, and as I clean my chain anyway (some people don't) I don't mind the little bit of spooge it collects- best bit is I find it flings off the least - i'd rather clean my chain than flung off lube from the bike......besides my brother uses "chain lube" (can't remember manufacturer sorry but it's expensive) and it gets no less collection of crap on it than mine with me using wax, horses for corses really I reakon though.

Ooo Ooo!! Yep what he said!! The bit about the wax. And the only other thing I'd suggest is look at a Scott Oiler or similar as well.

There are heaps of good products available that I would recommend. My personal favourite is "Repsol Moto" chain lube, though it's hard to find.
The only two I really dislike is Castrol chain lube and Rock Oil chain wax.

As others have said.......

Chain Wax. Silkolene make a great chain wax which is white when you spray it on. It doesnt fling all over your rear wheel and swingarm and you can see where you have sprayed it on. I'd never go back to a standard 'lube or oil' for road riding but would use it on my DR650 where I do alot of sand/dirt based riding.

Spectro chain wax - it's clear rather than white, so it doesn't look like someone's spread lard or dripping all over your chain.

Hear! I yam! 1/6th of us!

It never hurts to help (as Eek the Cat was wont to say, usually before he got severely hurted).
But (however!) teaching people to use the searching function is actually more helpful than being helpful and encouraging them to be lazy.
Kinda like giving a hungry man a fishing rod, rather than a fish finger, or an ornery finger. :motu:

80-90 gearbox oil. Minimal fling off. Easy to clean. Cheap. Works well for me.

Maxima chain wax.

Since I started to use this stuff a year ago I haven't had to adjust my chain once. When I was using Castrol chain lube I was adjusting it every couple of months.

Keep it lubed regularly, I try to do mine every 600km's.

As DUCATI+HARD will tell ya, the hard part is actually being arsed to lube it when it's nice & warm after a good ride while there's a cold drink waiting for ya in the fridge.:sweatdrop

Thanks firefighter it is always nice to use what this website is great for - communicating with my peers:clap:

Ok so I might have to give the wax a go it sounds wicked. So far the recommended brands are Spectro chain wax or Maxima chain wax. Will have a look around for them, unless one of you helpful boys knows who is stocking them in the Auckland area?

Good idea. Aerosol chain lubes, price wise are bit of a ripoff. I even use chain bar lube sometimes , its still messy tho. Never seen anything not be messy when your on a trip and aren't cleaning the bike for a a week or so.

I just bought a can of Maxima chain wax this afternoon from Cycletreads - $20. I was going to buy a can of Motul chain lube ($21) but the guy recommended chain wax, says it's much better.

Maxima was recommended to me by two of my mates that work at a bike shop. They've both had the chance to try the shops whole selection out and thats what they are currently using in the workshop as a preference over the other brands.

Don't forget the Silkolene......though it seems like the maxima is the popular one, as I said before though, it's all much in a muchness.....it's all just lube in the end.

From my current predicament, o-ring chains are the best lube.
Fuck heavy duty, that shit only lasted me 1200k's. Oiled twice a damn week out of paranoia. Not enough, IT WASN'T ENOUGH GRRRRRRR.
So on tomorrow, it will be:
'Oh hi, I'm looking for a new o-ring? Oh you do? LOVELY!'

Maybe you should try lubing your chain more often?

The kind of oil/wax you use isn't as important as doing it regularly though - I can't belive how much Scottoiler charge for a bottle and a tube though

Definitely a chain wax, Maxima is good, started using Spectro wax though as it's in stock at the shop I seem to be going to now and i'd say it's probably on a par with Maxima wax.
Don't forget though apply to a warm chain after a ride.

Anyone remember Duckham's 'boil in a tin' ? Loved that stuff. It went something like this... Get home and clean bike, whip chain off, clean in a solvent bath, coil chain and place on top of solid grease in big flat tin, place tin on gas burner and watch as chain slowly disappeared into boiling goop, remove chain while still hot and hang over tin to drip cool.... The only chain treatment I've ever had that will last a complete day's riding (MX, RR, enduro, trail).

Of course 'O'ring chains fixed the lube problem, except on the 125s, too much power loss.....

Hmmmm... wonders off to Google Duckhams.......

Could someone please explain to me the pros and cons of Wax vs. Synth oil (gearbox and such) vs Aerosol?
And, what is this flinging who-hah about. Some people beat people up over this one. Fling is dirty and messy, sets like tar. But does this not take grime and dirt with it? That's good, right?

I is a huge fan of the Scottoiler system despite the initial outlay and the time that is needed to fit it and get it calibrated. Set and forget while reducing the time involved in chain cleaning and maintenance. There is a little bit of fling onto the rear rim, but it wipes off dead easy. And my chains last longer. I have tried waxes in the past but never seemed to get the frequency and amount of application right.
I have also heard from a reliable source that Q8 Oils make a marvelous and excellent value chain lube.:dodge:
