Law vs Streetfighters?

As the holidays wear on and winter draws ever closer I've been slowly warming up to a wee little idea... Look in the overseas bike magazines and you might see a phenomenon known as street fighters. I'm not talking about the 'Fairings are expensive so screw em' variety, more the 'I started by getting an led tail light and somehow a year later I ended up with this and a very light wallet' variety. I haven't really been to car and bike shows asides from BBT so i'd like to know if there is a local scene for this peculiar brand of insanity. I haven't seen any around but that really doesn't mean much in a place like Auckland does it.

My plan is to find a rather beat up example of the misunderstood RF900R and go to town on it. Keeping my bandit to continue my learning curve in the meantime. Of course Kiwibiker would be home to the build log and by the time I'm done i'm hoping for a bike that is totally, unequivocally 100% mine that I know the shape, reason and purpose of every single tiny part of. Hopefully including a large number of parts designed and fabricated by yours truley :Punk:. A bit like my mini only a lot more hardcore! Once finished I have absolutely no doubt it will be years and years before I even begin to find it's limits.

Soo, I may be looking for experts ride it to help critique and setup the suspension, brakes and other fairly important bits of just any bike. Anyway asides from my unnatural urge to share I wanted to see if anyone else in NZ is doing anything similar. I know about NZstreetfighters.com but apart from a dead forum I'm not really a fan of the style of parts they are selling. Also what are the laws regarding changing just about every part of the bike, somewhat free'er than the rules regarding cars i'm hoping... :Police:

RF is a good start.

SRAD GSXR or TL1000R tail. GSXR1000 front end with braided lines. Ohlins rear shock. Valve emulators and progressive shocks in the front end.

Ditch most of the RF motor. Keep the head and carbs. Throw it onto the GSXR1100W motor (you'll have to drill some holes in the head gasket as the water holes are slightly different). Add GSXR750 SRAD cams. 145 main jets. K&N air filter and Two Bros pipe. Put in beefier clutch springs. GSXR1100 radiator and oil cooler.

Double lights off Speed Triple or equivalent.

That's what I'd do to my RF if I had the money and time.

My CBR600F2 streetfighter will probably be up for sale soon cheap. Hard work done already and wouldn't take too much effort to make it into a good looking bike. Probably a good starting point.

Are there any major differences between the RF900 and RF900R? I actually like the RF Frame more than the GSXR SRAD frame, the knee indent is pretty awesome and unique looking...

From what I read the RF motor essentially has a gsxr1100w bottom end and a smaller head w/ downdraft carbs. Something about ridiculous midrange torque and simple mods for high power because it's a rock solid engine?
Nice plan though, I imagine it would go like a bat on speed!

I have an idea for a custom headlight with integrated LED indicators & high and low beam with a similar dual purpose system at the back (think ducati tail lights with integrated indicators). Really in the end though I think i'll just go for it and see what happens... :)

RF900 and RF900R is same bike.

Yes, based on water-cooled gixxer 1100 engine but with different crank, conrods, pistons, cylinders, heads, cams and carbs. Oh - and it has the SRAD750 clutch too. Sizing is the biggest difference - not strength.

However, if you're feeling keen the 1100 stuff will all go in there but TBH it's easier (apparently) to put the RF head on the gixxer engine.

Check out oldskoolsuzuki.info - there's a heap of stuff on modifying RF900's there including a lot of engine mods. The YZF1000 Thundercat has the same downdraught's as the RF but a 40mm instead of a 36mm which would help if you put the RF head on the gixxer bottom end.

Huge huge power potential. Apparently the merkins are getting nearly 200hp at the crank out of RF motors ATM.

Hi, Yes your right, the 'Street fighter' is big in europe! Im from the uk & now live in hamilton. I ride a CBR954 Fightered Blade! Do the work and i promise you the bike will turn you into a hoon! if your not already lol It will be awsome to see a few more done here. The wide bars make twisty back roads awsome fun! Not to metion the wheelies. Would be cool to get a club up and running too. Maybe get a gallery up and running also. The possibilitys are endless as to what you can do to a sportsbike to create your 'OWN MACHINE'. in fact check out the honda CB1000R, honda have realized that theres a market for this style of bike and decided to make one!

http://www.nzstreetfighters.com/ is the closest I've seen. Customfighters.net is another, but not NZ based... good crowd though.
