View Full Version : '09 R1 or pimp an '07?

DMNTD

Right...after a very large solid object decided to write off my 1098S and nearly me, I'm in the unusual predicament of having to buy another road bike

I've sort of been there did that with a few "nice" bikes in the past so have been fairly spoilt so something unique is in order.
Due to where I work I've only been thinking about either a Ducati/Yamaha/Triumph and have come up with either a 2009 R1 or pimping out an '07 R1 that I know of at work which I could get for a very good price.
These days I really don't ride much...maybe only 100-300kms per week(maybe) so sick of spending so much money on something that has essentially become a toy.
BTW...when I say pimp I 100% promise you that I do NOT mean lengthened swing arm etc!!
Opinions with reasons appreciated

Buy a Shitzubishi van so YOU can win the next encounter.

Pimp an older bike. Buying brand new is great for the first few weeks while no-one else has one but then you've spent a lot of money and in a year's time it's old hat. Buy something that's already old hat and turn it into something unique. You'll get a better bike for your buck.

My 2c.

07 pimped is going to be more unique, probably cost less as well, as you know you're going to mod an 09 if you got that instead.

Since its a toy, which would give you more jollies? The 09 does have the big bang firing order, so rather special like that, but soon several are going to have them. 07 imho looks better, but they're both pretty boy bikes anyway :Pokey:

And since when does someone else decide what you ride? :baby:

test ride a buell 1125 r and if you like it put full fairings on it so you dont kill anyone with its uglyness.

Reading between the lines, I'm guessing your a bit bored with the novelty of a new bike, which as someone else pointed out soon wears off! Building your own personalised bike out of what is already a damned good bike makes a lot of sense, particularly from the 'toy' aspect - there's a lot of pleasure to be had in creating something, plus all that tinkering in the shed, you can't beat that! :)

Yeah, that's a start...... (nice bike :) )

I reckon that sort of thing makes a fun, one off bike that suits it's owners tastes. Relative performance advantages (if any) of a new bike over something like that would be irrelevant on the road.

Stock, the newest model has a delay in the response of the throttle, that drove me mad. Apparently a set of pipes and a remap should sort that out. For good throttle response, you want a KTM. Open that throttle just a little, and it wants to take your arms off (yes, some call that snatchy).

Understandable wanting something unique but ai'nt nothing wrong with jappa of the shelf particularly any of the latest sports bikes.
Buy an '09 chuck some cans on it and and be happy 'coz you'll have a weapon in the garage and money in your pocket as opposed to buying something "special". Won't be too many new '09 R1's about for a while anyway.

The 07 is a beautiful machine and only gets better with bling.

But the sound of the 09 must be heaven..... And you can always add bling down the track to keep it interesting.

I know... How about you tee me up a test ride an 09 so I can answer for sure

Sounds like a cake and eat it situation developing here.

I'm sure you'll get a mean deal on the 09 but it'd still be pricey I'm guessing. An 07 tricked out with full pipe/headers, PCIII and full suspension blah blah is gonna be a better ride for the money huh?

Should even have some change for racing. I hear it isn't that cheap....

Go the '07. NZ'ers by and large are a conservative bunch who balk at the mere sight of a non-standard paintjob.

Make the bike your own, rather than just buying a compromised approximation the same as the one pulled up next to you at the lights.

What do you want from a bike?
Are you happy with stock suspension?
Are you happy with stock engine performance
Are you happy with stock exhaust sound?
Are you happy with stock aesthetics?
Are you happy with stock handling?
Are you gonna carry a pillion?

You've got a good budget (racing or not) so do something a bit out of the ordinary instead of buying just another throw away toy (no pun intended):
Carbon wheel's
Moriwaki or Sato exhaust
Self supporting carbon subframe/tail section or tank/subframe monococque,
six piston calipers http://shop.durbahn.de/shop/en/bikes/Yamaha_-_YZF-R1?bikecat=63
Ultra light ceramic discs http://shop.durbahn.de/shop/en/bikes/Yamaha_-_YZF-R1?bikecat=42
lightweight battery http://shop.durbahn.de/shop/en/bikes/Yamaha_-_YZF-R1?bikecat=18
Carbon fairing, minus 1 heavy headlight
Big bore kit (1080cc) http://www.tts-performance.com/catalog/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=30&products_id=489
Full Ohlins forks http://www.superbikeplanet.com/classifieds/ce?action=showAd&adId=6780 matched with http://www.superbikeplanet.com/classifieds/ce?action=showAd&adId=6787 and talk to Dr Bob about a damper to match

...of course if you want something even more special start with this...http://www.superbikeplanet.com/classifieds/ce?action=showAd&adId=6745 and add this http://www.superbikeplanet.com/classifieds/ce?action=showAd&adId=6786

It's not just about throwing a bit of carbon fibre or an exhaust at it, it's about making the bike better represent what your ideal bike would be, unfettered by race rules or engineering compromises. Or you could buy an '09 complete with it's wheelbarrow handle exhausts and tacky front end the same as the rest of the follow the trend crowd.....

I don't care how many bourbons ya gave me, there's no way I'm goin' home with one of those fugger's.....even if you threw in 6 extra belts to replace the ones I strip or a 1098 front end to replace that shonky rim brake that every Buell racer (all 3 of 'em) curses.

Hmmmph, paint a ZRX1200, XJR1300, CB1300 and GSX1400 the same and most people couldn't pick them apart, so I wouldn't say naked's are known for their diversity.

Map 2, which is perfectly alright for stock pipes clears that up nicely. Map 1, is just to get it past the euro emmisions, and I don;t think anybody, including Aprilia and the Euro teting guys expect an owner to stay on map 1 for long.

....which is my point for DMNTD. My bike is 8 years old and it's still a weapon (Ohlins shock, Race tech front end, Marchesini's, Akrapovic, ram air box, YEC cams, lightened crank, increased compression, full floating discs) and I still enjoy opening the shed and firing it up.

I just feel sorry for it having to put up with me riding it, poor thing......

Regardless of what may or may not 'learn' what, I think you guys have gone off on a tangent and are missing the point.
DMNTD has been there, done that with fast and latest bikes, unless I'm very much mistaken he's coming at this from a completely different angle - it's about enjoyment and much of that enjoyment, given that he has stated he doesn't have time to ride as much as he'd like is in building/creating a one off special. The fact that he's in the trade makes this even more attractive as he's in the right place to get parts at good prices and so on.

And really when you get past all the testosterone fuelled campfire bragging rights of having a bike that's the fastest, the reality is that for a bike that's used predominantly on the road, top speed is largely irrelevant as anything that's been produced in the last couple of decades is more than capable of loosing you your licence (and your bike for 28 days) in the first 1 or 2 gears. Not only that a good percentage of people buying latest/trickest/fastest bikes can't ride them to their potential anyway, certainly not enough to embarass a late model R1 that's got top of the line suspension and improved braking and power...

Besides, for obvious reasons he's limited to Yamaha, Triumph or Ducati which still leaves him some tasty choices, though for whatever reason he's obviously narrowed that down to the choice of R1's in the poll so we should really stick to discussing them - unless DMNTD has had a change of heart?
