But way better bikes to ride!!!!!!!!:scooter:;)

I've always liked Guzzis but never been brave enough to take the plunge, I think I was put off by their bad rep re electrics and their undeniably poor finish in the 70s.Bubbling chrome, flaky paint and rusty discs and that was brand new in the showroom.

I still think the one bellow is as close as I've ever seen to what a proper bike should look like, I've had a quiet crush for 30 odd years.

I notice, since being on here, that they have a small but fiercely passionate and loyal following.Comments like the one above always make me think I've missed out somehow.

So are they really good to ride, they sure look better finished than yesteryear and they've gotta be reliable, their longevity is beyond question....I think I'm asking, should I take one for a spin, or is that how love affairs start?

Molly
19th January 2009, 19:35
Thanks for the pics chaps. Didn't get the kneecaps reference either. Can't think that they'd be any more vulnerable on a Guzzi than any other bike (if anything the cylinders might well offer a measure of protection - but I'm not keen to find out).

Re. ownership. Each to their own at the end of the day so it'd be silly to say riding a Guzzi is 'better' than some other bike but I just love mine. I love the way it handles, that the motor has so much character, and that it's just such a good looking machine. If you get the chance spend at least an hour on one and get it out into the twisties.

I have a bad Guzzi memory, many years ago i worked in a bike shop in Dunners,as i say it was years ago but anyway there was a ?..Spada? cant quite remember out in the workshop that had just had its freshly repainted tank put back on,i had to go somewhere so chucked on a helmet and jumped on the thing, when i got to were i was heading the only place to park was on a very slight grade, very slight,up onto the center stand all good, when i returned the fu%kin thing had rolled off and lay down on a low concrete fence,on its tank:shit::shit::shit:Went back to work very red faced.

haha, your screwed man.
na look, if you were to take one for a spin then it needs to be a decent spin and out of town where the funny vib, the pull to the left and the tall gear boxs wont have you thinking WTF.

Todays bikes have actually lost a lot of the Guzzi feel with lighter engines and SS swingarms etc.
My 1st MG was brought over the net. The 1100 sport was always like a dream bike so when it arived I was so keen to ride it I tore off down the road instead of returning to work.
I really thought WTF have I done it was terrible ie: nothing like any other bike Id ridden.
But 5000k's klater it was starting to make sence, 10k and I was loving it 20k and it still just got beter every day.

Sold it for a new VTR1000 had that for 2yrs and found myself thinking I was missing something, seen a rare V11 in the shop and brought it on the spot... when I picked it up and left the 1st set of lights I knew what I had been missing, it was noisie, shook, pulled to the left... ahhh this will only make sence to a Guzzisti :Punk:

As far as finish goes, yeah quality control often let them down but was a easy fix. Electrics well again simple fix when ya know how and thats were the Guzzi people come into it.

Thanks for the pics chaps. Didn't get the kneecaps reference either.
Na and the poster that mentioned it (bet ya hes a young twat with no brains) didnt get my reply judging by the thoughtless red rep he left :jerry:

No mate, that makes a lot of sense, even to a none Guzzisti, It's character that makes a certain bike more than just a machine, It's it's peculiarities that make it seem to have a personality. A dishwashers a machine but it's the same as all the others, one that whistles and dances across the floor as it cleans would be the one that gets my attention and adoration. How much is a bargain V11? They start at around £2,000 in the UK for an untidy one. Bought mine in the Isle of Man for £2,600.00 which made it worth shipping out here (just). Last time I looked S&S wanted around $10,500 for the silver bike which I thought was a bit steep.

However, IMHO the MGS-01 takes the cake for THE BEST looking Guzzi though.

Molly- Never really seen a tatty V11 for sale, maybe the Kiwi's look after them (after we import bulk second hand low km ones from Japan and the USA)
The cheapest one I have seen went for 7K and it was pretty ok. Unfortunately due to said imports the going rate for them has dropped quite a bit in the last 2 years. 2 years ago they were 12K+ now arount the 9-10K mark and probably not set to go up for a long while because there are plenty about, and quite a lot of factory 'special' variants too.

Dangerous- I too met PaulNZ (and his better half) at Ottamatta for the first time, but he had been very supportive (jus' like the dad I never 'ad) with my Mk1 via email like the top fella he is. Swore we would go for a ride some time, took until this year- but by chance I had my Mk2 as well and that was cool.;)

some pictures of a development project I did for a rally(Opononi). I do live in West Auckland so I guess I can be perhaps forgiven- it was over a period of 6 weeks before we were set to leave, I finished with 1 day to test it. It is not just cosmetics, the engine went out to 950, twin plugs, elec ign, timing gears, surflex clutch etc etc

MGS-01 agreed, but I thought the modern Le Mans was sooo wrong, Guzzi lost it when the went away from the 1100 Sport Styling I'm afraid. True, had they kept on with the 1100 sport and called it the Lemans then thigs would be different... however Aprila took over MG and they didnt want to see MG building hard sports bikes, and I think thats why MG have backed away from the real LeMans and the purpos they were built for.
Remember the MGS01 is a brian-Ghezi bike not Guzzi.

And if you got Mk1/2- are you going to chop out the gills and mesh behind? That looks trick :niceone:

You have only sampled two of the range, albiet from both extremes.

Try the cafe sport when it comes in, being a Breva type 750 it will have plenty of usable power in legalish speeds. Still not cheap though- estimates from my dealer is around 18K!

I will be bringing something old school for the rally, your welcome to have a try, then breaking it to your better half that you need 5K for bike improvements will be easier than the $$ of a trade up. I know you look after your Grizzler but a dealer would not offer a heap for it due to the recent low km grey imports that have been coming in. (I know of one with 6,300km that changed hands for 15.5K on the road!!)
The bike upgrade being that you now have two bikes!:2thumbsup

By the way, I saw one of those bikes, (yes she's on a bike look closer) at whangas yesterday and it wasn't looking quite that well, a right bucket of rust but testament to the engine that it was still running. What bike is it guys, stylish for an old fella.

Being the hobbit I am I have the opposite problem with leg room. I find the V11 riding position fits my little legs perfectly (apart from the reaching the ground bit:laugh:) but a couple off mates over six foot finds they smack there knees on the heads. Guess you just have to sit on one to find out if your legs are too long or not. If you ever see me & my bike around, introduce yourself & find out if it fits or pop into Street n sport on Manchester st, they have a V11sport for sale.

I'm about 5'10" and find the V11 comfortable enough to ride all day. Mine has clip-on bars but the riding position is very natural (I'm not stretched over the tank, craning my neck to see where I'm going like the Ducati 996 I had). There's even room for my belly... :-(

As the previous poster said, there's one in Street & Sport so you may as well give it a go. They're a nice lot in there actually.

As for 'tractor', well, f'k 'em. I've had that crap for years because of my long line of Harleys (newer ones are actually disappointingly refined - like riding a Jap bike).

Came back from a ride on the Guzzi at the weekend and said to my wife, if I'd discovered this bike / brand years ago I could've saved myself a fortune. Tractor? FFS... About as orignial as riding a CBR. Bikers can be such dicks.

Yes,I think a lot of Guzzi owners are a bit um....shallow? They are into the V twin image and just don't seem to grasp the history of the marque. The Stornello was designed by Mr Whatzziznameo, and the head design in particular is very similar to the twins.

I got the Stornello brand new in 1978,so it's been with me for some time. There were some 125 Stornello trail bikes sold in Chch - do any turn up down there?

I'd really like a V twin - but I went for an airhead as being a more realistic price, and more adaptable to my purposes.

It's a '74 - we found 5 of them in storage (in the back of a car yard) and got all 5 in '78.Yes,it's a five speed - they are a very well built engine, they have a massive wide primary gear drive, using the cam gear in the primary drive. It appears they have a weak crank....one we got as spares in parts had a broken flywheel mag side mainshaft. Then mine broke too - I had a new mainshaft made for it.

They were pretty fast in the day,I could clean up most Jap stuff under 250cc on it.I had it out on Pukekohe once and ran both speedo and tacho around to the stops.I highsided it once and smashed the instrument mount, hence no instruments...I've always been getting around to making a stainless one.

I have done a bit of reading on this.
And you can buy a wingage tray to stop this happening.
The bottom line is some people get this problem and some don't.

Why?

No one has come up will a reason yet. (that I have read)
There must be something to do with the oil or the heat of the oil to make it thin enough to slosh around to cause the problem.

We have never had a problem with either of our bikes.

Can't say that I have either but I'm the first to get paranoid so really should keep off the technical websites...

I live up a bloody steep hill and haven't seen the oil light come on (don't do hard starts either). I over-fill a little as, again because the tech websites said so, the full marker on the V11 is actually a little lower than it should be.

Over filling is not good either.
You can pressurize the sump, blow seals or spit oil out the breather tube and that could end up on your rear wheel.

I would just fill to the recommended mark.

Apparently it's around the 2002 models black motors.
When the black crackle paint was applied the crankcase at the factory, the so-called factory workers never properly cleaned off the paint overruns onto the mating surfaces and put the gaskets straight on.
From memory it was at the front cover.
A wee while later, the gasket blows and bye-bye oil.

Anyway here's a link that may partially explain. I got told this by a Guzzi dealer.

I was a problem that could happen to the older Guzzi's and at the end of the day the motor is basically the same.
The main reason they put the sump spacer in was not for more oil but to get more of a air gap in to the sump to help stop pressurizing the sump.

The pressure in the sump is pressurized to the point the sump gasket or a oil seal can not take the pressure any more and it pops out.
A bit like blowing up a balloon until it pop's.

thought I'd add to your store of pictures - first one is my Cali just after I picked it up in 1994, the second is how it looks today - I'm waiting on my re-chromed forks coming back!

I'm not sure that this has worked! I've tried attaching a couple of files but where the second one has gone I've no idea! sussed it - my file was too big!

When I bought the Cali, I had actually gone to look at a Nevada, because the Nevada fitted my "technical" requirements - 750cc plus, shaft drive, luggage, windscreen - but when I sat on one it just didn't grab me at all - the Cali was an extra £2000, so I tried everthing else in the shop before I sat on it - and when I did, that was it! off down to the bank manager for some extra cash.
I've now done 50,000miles on it and I still like the feel of it. The first real trip a couple of months after I got it was UK to Poland and return - 1000 miles each way.
Would love to have it out in NZ, though.

I'm glad you said "normally" - the floating disc carriers don't have any markings at all! (apart from my alignment punch marks!)
your call.....

I agree with nudemetalz about the seat!

Have you looked on the the outside perimeter of the disc(the skinny edge).
Brembo's some times have the measurement punched on that, My F1 also
had "not for highway" use as well, go figure.

I think it is a Corbin king and queen seat and they are really are comfy. Looks sometimes can be overlooked on a long ride. Wish I had the $$ to have one. Those Guzzi seats usually come off with 2 bolts and the wiring clip anyway. The Mk3 seat foam tends to go rock hard over the years. Well the few high use ones I've seen have.
* years ago I priced pretty much the same type of seat for my Mk1. It was going to be over $750 back then for plain black and over $800 for 3 colour like the flag.

I really like the rearsets, just because they are not the usual aftermarket types used often. Saved the picture for that reason- they look simple to make.

I have never had this problem either, with any Guzzi's so far.
As with the oil level. I would trust the factory, they test the things under all sorts of conditions- sober and after lunch.

There is a lot of technical meanderings to be found on the web. Take it with a grain of salt mate- it's still ok to evaluate other opinons. Sometimes people have more time on their hands than most and they are often the ones with time to spend online typing out articles and how-to stuff. The big book is pretty good I have to admit but there is not a lot of V11 related stuff in it yet. Give him a few years...

Tried that - nothing there! I've got my figures from my Guzzi manual - but I doubt that an NZ tester would have that on call.
What's the likely price of replacement discs out there - I have been quoted over £100 per disc here.

The brake disc's have to be check by someone in the know, they have the manuals and know who to ring as it is their ass that is on the line if they get it wrong.
I know a guy that use to do the check, so I would not bet on it.
And if not sure, they will reject it.

If anyone is trying to bring a bike over, bring it in a standard form and life will be a lot easier.
And bring your trick bits in a box and change it back after you have the VIN and sell off the stock parts here.
Then you remove the problem of the tester having to make a call on a part he has not seen before, to pass it or not.
If you have to many parts that he may think they are not legal he will just reject it.
So the bun fight will start.:girlfight::argue::angry2:

thanks for your comments - the thing about being standard worries me as I will be replacing the entire exhaust system soon with a full stainless steel system - how would this go down?
Anyway, it's back to being roadworthy again, but I will need a new rear tyre very soon.
The second picture is the other v-twin that I run - it also needs a new rear tyre!

Some one else in the know would answer your question better.
I think the main pipes will not be a problem.
It is the muffler part, I think it must have a non-removable baffle and be below 90db you may get away with up to 100 I think if certified. (more money)
So if you could find a muffler with lots of nice numbers (crap) on it for Vin-ing you would be OK?
Or could borrow one over here for the VIN-ing.
And then put your complete stainless system on.
WOF (every 6 months unless under 3 years old then once a year) are not as tuff as VIN-ing (once really unless highly modified)

Your second bike may take a bit more to get VINed and on the road and does not look like it would like ours tight hilly road.:Pokey:

I was thinking more the Te Rapa straight - canterbury plains are out - those damned right angle railway crossings would get me!
There is an outfit near me which produces stainless systems for quite a few models, don't know if they certify them or do any decibel tests, though.
Have a look at www.ospipes.co.uk.

I think that they would have to be certified here, is less it was a tester they approve of.
Just make sure it is under 90db and you can not remove the baffle.
Best of all, E-Mail a VIN out fit over here and they should beable to give you the good oil.

To shed a different ligh on my Griso... ECU kinda interesting, read further on this thread... Click here (http://forum.guzzitech.com/index.php?option=com_fireboard&Itemid=2&func=view&catid=41&id=8247#8414)

It is not flash, but we shall process and progress, shame that Griso on trademe that dropped a rear wheel (how do you do that) (was it trying to be a ducati dragging it ass like a duck???) is a bit steep in price, or not being parted out.

$NZ3000.00 for a new ECU is rather excessive, surely I could have a laptop in a backpack linked up... well maybe not.... :eek5:

No. It's just not that complicated. Just keep a few relays on hand in case one takes a shit (only had one fail in the past year though).

I swapped the fork legs over to have the calipers at the rear, I thought it looked funny out front and it's supposed to be better in ways I have forgotten, something to do with inertia and airflow:wacko:

Don't know why I have not spotted this thread before now. Great pics of great bikes and scantily clad "bike attachements". Although I don't understand alot of the 'indepth' Guzzi talk I just love riding mine. I ride it every day, wet or fine. (Fine is better!) Had a neighbour who has a jappa road bike ask me the other day what bike I was going to get next. I looked at him blankly and asked why would I want to change? Well here is my 'baby'. And unlike those that have posted pics of 'girls on Guzzis' I get to take My Guzzi Girl home with me every night!!!!

Yeah D, it's knackered. 500cc engine- seized, but it gives me a frame, gearbox, diff and wiring loom to graft a 750 motor in there and make the rest up on the fly. It looked worse in his barn, 3 hours on the back of the ute at open road speeds blew a lot of the crap off on the way to my place. Did I mention he delivered it?
