View Full Version : SPOKES! AGAIN! - too long?

Ok I've started to redo my spokes. Took me ages to get the tyre off!

So, in my spoke kit there is 2 lengths of spokes. I was changing the ones on the short side and I've found some of the short ones are slightly too long and stick out about 1-2mm.

Question is though, will this flatten my tyre? should I trim these down? will the rim tape save my inner tube?

The wheel is running pretty true so I don't think that its an issue with tuning the wheel.

Same here, from memory 4 were to long, guy who laced & trued the wheel for me just cut enough of the ends off so they did not poke out of the nipple, though he reckoned you want to be careful that there is enough thread to hold left, but mine were more like 10-15mm to long.

No rim tape won't save your tube!. The sticky up spoke ends will chafe through the tape quite quickly then through your tube. You need to cut or grind off the spoke to be flush with the end of the nipple. It's quite normal to have to do this.

Thank god for that. Thought I was doing it all wrong. I'll get the dremel onto it!

Nearly, spokes are all fitted, I just need to trim the ones that are too long then go get my tyre put back on (fucked if I'm doing that myself! getting it off was bloody shit!!!)

And I've got to fix that xbox sometime soon too.

So you keen for Riverhead on sunday? We can go to the beach on Sat to let your kids fang about on the bikes!

I've only done a dozen tires, but the videos are good & practise does make it easier, I've seen it done putting the tube on with the tire, but helluva easy to pinch the tube I reckon, well ok I did pinch the tube :).

Yeah I'm running a Heavy duty tube so pinches are less likely.

That video was really good. So easy when you know how!!! I'll get myself a good set of tyre spanners and do it myself in the future.

The tricks he uses for pushing the tyre into the rim, they make a helluva diff, but the way he puts the valve through the rim didn't work for me, maybe cause I'm on 18" rears, maybe inexperience, but I could not get it to work.

The tube I pinched was heavy duty :).

Which beach you talkin about? and i take you have done your forks as well keen man to ride on those the way they are

I don't know, just a beach. Riverhead doesn't get opened for riding that often!

Not even touched my forks yet.

I stick my tube in the tyre, tighten the valve stem, then strech the tyre wide, so one end of the rim fits completly into the tyre, with both beads of the tyre on the outside of the rim, and work from there. Learnt this trick from a pro - way easyer. Also soap + water in a spray bottle make it even easyer. Give it a go... went from changing tyres in an hour to around 10min inc. taking wheel off.

Will have to try this way, but do use soap and water, makes it heaps easier.

It's just about easier putting them on than taking them off, just need practise.
