They are going to need a new Stig - that's why they went from "Black Stig" (Black gear) to White Stig; there is a clause in his contract that if his identity gets out, he's sacked.

As the link says, this has been an "open secret" for years...it was the report into the Hamster's crash that gave the game away, although the motor racing nerds had apparently picked the driving style before that.

Why do people have to spoil things for others? What was wrong with a bit of mystery as to whom The Stig could have been? Why did he need to be "unmasked"?

I didn't need to know. I was happy to bask in the mystery of it all.

vifferman
20th January 2009, 12:44
Yeah, there is that.
So The Stig was a real person, with a real name, a history, and everthing?
Fancy that!
While I think it was unnecessary to publicly reveal his identity, it's not that big a deal. It's just removed some of the aura of mystery about it.

But the media are really good at this sort of stuff - it's not about news, it's about sensationalism. A case in point is both The Harold and TV3 splashing about the details of the cockpit voice recorder transcript from the Air NZ A320 crash. While it wasn't them who originally released it (it was the French), it wasn't at all kind to the families concerned, who hadn't had a chance to find out anything about it beforehand. All it would have taken was a phone call to Air NZ.
But no - they wanted to be "the first with the scoop". :Pokey:

A brilliant sense of humour... especially for a German. Not a slouch behind the wheel of a cage and pretty decent at whipping a van around the Nurburgring.

It's been well known in the UK for years who the stig was. He has also appeared as Ben Collins several times on various things on Top Gear. I can't see what all the fuss is about..... Mind you TG is much bigger now than when they had old Black Stig so it's a big story "outing" him.

I know this isn't bikes... but Top Gear gets a lot of coverage here, so thought it would be of interest.

Suppose there will be a new one introduced soon... wonder what colour his suit will be?

Darn.....
I was hoping it was Hill.
Somehow Collins doesn't come as a surprise to me. I think I was digging through the report on Hammond's accident and stumbled across his name.

All people at the track were named in the report, and Hammond mentioned the Stig was there that day, but didn't name him.
The report had to though.

As for what colour the next one will be?
Well..... Purple?
Who will it be?
Well, I wonder what David Coulthard is up to these days.....

Stuff.co.nz 22/06/09

After years of keeping his identity secret, former Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher has revealed he is "The Stig" - but news reports suggest his unveiling is another stunt.

"The Stig" is an anonymous professional test car driver from hit motoring show Top Gear, and each episode sees the character whizzing around test tracks in powerful cars wearing a white jumpsuit with his features hidden by a white crash helmet.

The original Stig was axed from the show after British racing-car driver Perry McCarthy revealed his identity in an autobiography in 2002.

In an episode broadcast in England on Sunday, the current Stig took off his white helmet to loud cheers from the studio audience, revealing himself to be Schumacher, Formula One's most successful driver and seven times world champion.

However, BBC News reported that it was unclear whether Schumacher really was the Stig or whether it was a stunt.

"Clarkson jokingly pretended not to recognise the German driver and asked him his name, before shouting to the audience: 'It's Michael Schumacher!'," BBC News reported.

"The presenter had revealed in his column in The Sun that Stig's identity would be a "staggering surprise" to viewers."

In January, media reports had claimed Stig was Ben Collins, who featured as a stuntman in the James Bond film Quantum of Solace.
