Help! I lost my start button

somewhere in between home and work my start button fell out, so now all i have is the spring in there to push, anyone got some ingenious ideas on where i could find another start button?

Bike is a 1990 Yamaha FZR

Well, that's unusual anyway. it looks like a standard Yamaha thing, I'll have a look in my Yamaha bits boxes and see if I have one.

I just went to Dick Smith got a push button switch that looked about right and with a bit of filing and soldering and stuff, it worked perfect..:cool:

Seems they come in several sizes. Can you measure it.

Yeah it is roughly 21mm wide by about 7-8mm high, as ya can tell from the photo not a perfect square

Ah, bummer. That's the later, smaller one. The one I have a spare of is the earlier larger one, 24mm by 9.5mm . Sorry.

EDIT: can you swap it with the horn button temporarily. Either by switching over the button itself, or by swapping the wires so that hitting the horn button activate sthe starter?

thats a brilliant idea, out of the two months that i had my bike i have never used the horn so even if i can't find a replacement it shouldn't be an issue.

Any idea though on a way to take it out with out risking breaking the plastic from button from the metal rod that it rotates on? i don't really want to risk having one lost button and a broken button that could easily become lost.

I would be inclined to wire the existing button where it is, it might be a mission to do but it will eliminate the risk of damaging the existing button.

The other option (mentioned earlier i think) is to grab a push button from dick smith that will fit in the control box, wire and glue it in so it is strong and then take your time in finding a new RH control box.

The start button on my old XJ650 stopped working. I got a push button from Dick Smiths for a buck or two. It fitted the hole in the switch box fine and lasted for years, I just had to solder the wires.

yeah i think i may have to do this, i currently have the end of a pen in the hole at the moment with the spring to start it, works alright but am hoping it won't fall out, haven't had much luck finding a replacement box ether. Will need to check out DSE i think

Soon you are gonna tell me that there is no innertube to fix, no spokes to tighten, no points to adjust. And the carbi has been replaced with some gadget that squirts the fuel in.
