if it can't be read from 45 degrees either side, and/or isn't lit, it ain't legal.

and yes - a lot of suv's with tyres on the back are illegal, as they shield the plate

Yeah are there any weird rules about where the plate and lights need to be at the back ?

I'd like to chop my ZXR tail unit right down shorty like.

Sedge.

Well, you'd be able to read it right? Just doesnt appear to have a number plate light?

as are most cars with tow bars.

Does the vertical orientation affect the legality at all??

A few I have seen have them mounted just rear of the rear shock, in front/attached to the hugger, which should be legal if you get lights down there, a couple of white LEDs would do the trick

Shit i was looking at that plate like "fuck me thats my old TL", but mine was 41TUB, i've seen those brackets for sale overseas, legal overhere don't think so and personally i reckon it looks ugly.
Guess it would'nt be too hard to jack a light up for it, guess it all depends on where ya get ya WOF's from and how shit a day the officer that pulls ya for it has had.

SaSlex is the plates you're referring to the ones when peeps with CBR's with a/m pipes on em do away with the plate holder and mount it almost behind the rear wheel by the shock, don't think thats too legal as it's not in full veiw. But i guess catching a new blade is a different story for some of the blade owners i know that have done that.

While the plate doesnt look too cool mounted there, the tail end certainly looks pretty good esp with the enclosed undertray. :niceone:

In fact i just cut away the whole plate flappy thing at the back of my TL, plates still mounted legally, just no hideous black plastic crap thing there with some tiny indicators off the luggage hooks, looks the ticket alright, pity bout the rest of my bike
it's easy to cut off and makes a huge differnce to the rear.

Just a Q the 45 degree part, if his pegs are scrapping do ya think he'll still get done :2thumbsup

i'm not exactly sure on the 45 degree regs, motu might know, but it's around there somewhere

There's stuff all about reg plates - you don't even have to have one fitted for a WoF,it just has to be registered...gotta know the plate number though.Trailers often have the plate mounted verticaly,it's just got to be illuminated at night.Testers disresion...me? - no.

is there any law that states it has to be the right way up?

20th February 2005, 21:46
I don't think there's much for a WOF... but it must be lit, and visible from a 45° angle either side of straight behind (and on a car in front).

Found out the hard way...

visible from the back and from 45 degrees either side... does that mean I could mount it as a belly-pan?

*very evil grin*

(I saw that on trademe and wondered the exact same thing...)

Doubt very much that it's legal, as it is difficult to see on most angles.
That and the fact that most interesting things are illegal .

well IMHO it just doesnt look quite right where it is postitioned...

Shit if it got loose it could then rub against the tyre and wheel..
and if it lost a nut holding it on while riding it could fall over into the wheel and cause a nasty accident...

Nup put it back up where its supposed to go.. IMHO.

Yeah mate  motorcycles are dangerous, don't ya know? Best you stick to driving a car, aye, something might come loose on your virago and fall off and get stuck in your wheel too, best you park it up and maybe better you catch the bus :shake:

Heaps of choppers run their plates like that - makes for a cleaner looking rear fender area IMHO. :niceone:

S'pose you'd be grateful that the chopper even has a rego plate.....

And where does everyone mounted your rego sticker? Apparently under the seat can cope you a $200 fine.
I want to try and tidy up the rear end a bit.

Nah mate, the Viragos dont have stuff falling off them at all. Now some of them Hondas....

On another note does anybody know how I could mount a US plate on the sissy bar of a Virago? Don't want to just toss out my Texas plate when i get the bike regoed and thought it would be cool to have it up on the back side of the sissy bar.Might Put the new plate there aswell. Already talked to the guys at the testing centre and they said it's legal so all I have to do is figure it out. Might just drill a few holes and bolt in on but don't know how stable that would be. Might give welding it a try but don't want to screw up the chrome. Any ideas would be helpfull. Ill try to get some pictures of the sissy bar and my plate latter today.

Agreed. Definitely a fugly there. Lets face it a Rego Plate ruins the arse end of a bike.
Somewhat like having a supermodel in Gstring and putting boxers on her. "Where did that beautiful arse end go????"

The only risk you have is if some pedantic law enforcer remembers "displayed other than authorised plate"

Having said that I have a Texas truck plate on my F100 (as well as the proper Kiwi plate) and have had no problems.

Oopa, sorry, Mrs Sd told me Albaquerque when I asked where we got the plate from (sound of sound slapping for her) but I recall it was more than likely in Vegas (yes, there is a small town in Texas named Vegas).

That Power Tour? - even met a Yank guy with a '46 Ford coupe - ute that knew of several Ch-ch rodders (Craig Stare, John Eva etc)

Sweet mate. If you get a chance to go up by Dallas then see if you can go up to Frisco wich is maybe a 15 minute drive north. You can stop by an electronics store there called Ultimate electronics on the corner of preston rd and SH121. Its a bit up preston from 121 but thats where I used to work before i came down here. Maybe get a deal on somethin though you would need a power transformer to power it here...

Ask for Dave the store manager or Joley Granger the opps manager(my boss) they should be able to help ya out if you are seriously gonna go in lol.
AS for the dry country I think I prefer it here where the roads are mostley curves and more green around them.

Yeah, well I live in that kind of country so the dry flat stuff is a bit of a break!!

You bet I'll go there - as long as you didn't leave a bit of a stink there when you left.

Probably May - June if plans go O.K.
