during a practice ride for my restricted licence test for this sunday (25th) my bike broke down 3 times and reido being the kind person he is he helped me roll start my bike .now heres the deal when i go to turn my bike on it either does nothing or i can just hear the starter motor but still will not run.sometimes i hear just a small clink clank
i checked if i had the killswicth on - no
i checked the lights because of the battery-yes the lights were still on yet only once the lights electrical wouldnt show up
sounds like starter motors stuffed yet when roll started twice each time the bike would run for 2ks in distance then putt out
i checked the fuel-got plenty
maybe also the main jets in carb are blocked explaining why i putt out as if i had no petrol.
i checked the 15 amp in the battery fuse i think its called-and it was fine.
im thinking starter motor plus battery
i am new to riding and have no experience in such things.
could anyone please give me any help on this.anything would be much appreciated.
oh and i have my restriced licence test this sunday (25th) and am hoping for the chance to hire or borrow someones bike for the test or if anyone knows a dealer who i can hire from.

Sounds like the battery is stuffed. And maybe the charging circuit. Do you have access to either a voltmeter or a battery charger

Grab a voltmeter. Check the charge across battery when stopped and then when on, um, i think 5000 revs. if it's above 14.5 from memory your reg/rec is probably fucked.
If it's that, then do a search or look back on my past posts on it when I had my GN.
Good luck mate

...the stress of having to hire a bike, fix the GN and not to mention getting a 'feel' of riding the hired bike before the test - perhaps re-scheduling the test and focusing on getting the GN back on track maybe a more desirable option?
Re-schedule early or you may incur a penalty though. Good luck with the fix! (nothing constructive I can think for your problem, sorry)

Hi youngbiker 16,the Chinese made GN250's charging circuit is not the best.I ended up replacing the whole damn thing in the end.First of all check battery electrolyte level and then charge the battery on a slow overnight charge(borrow a charger if you haven't got one).
Once the battery is fully charged put it back in the bike and start it ,once warm rev it to about 4000rpm and measure(borrow a multimeter or get a cheap one from Dick Smiths) voltage across battery terminals, should be around 14.5V from memory. When you rev the bike higher the voltage shouldn't increase. If it does your regulator/rectifier is stuffed and frying your battery.
If you don't get 14.5V then use the multimeter to measure the stators ac voltage output across the three phases:about 70V ac at 4000rpm.If any are less stator is stuffed.
Check out my old posts about subject and also get hold of the shop manual as that will tell you where and how to do all of the above.I think I have a link in one of my old posts.
Contact me if you have any further questions.Frosty was referring to the part number for your battery.
Sorry can't help with a loan bike don't have 250 anymore and current bike is waiting for parts.

More than welcome mate. Have a search for links to pdf of manual as well. helped me heaps when I started. The folks here are for the most part bloody top people.:first:
A new reg/rec is easy to install, even I could do it, but retail would cost about $250!! ALso search on reg/rec project, i think there are a team of clever lads here making them.
Happy riding, and love the might GN, even if she's Chinese...mine didn't rust:clap:
