View Full Version : Why didn't my Escort 8500 work?

Got pinged by bike cop recently. My Escort Passport never gave any indication of the hand held radar gun. My device works fine and so I'm wondering if they have some new technology or was it just bad luck? Also, is there a site somewhere that explains the laws surrounding speeding? I asked the guy when his gun was last calibrated and he said it was due for recalibration. Was supposedly doing 60 in a 50 zone.

Sure. Have a look at the thing called the law. It explains that if you get caught breaking the speed limit, you are subject to a possible penalty.
Seriously though, the calibration and operation of devices is not controlled by law. A Police policy sets out what has to be done.
http://www.police.govt.nz/resources/2007/speed-enforcement-guide/
It's public knowledge.
Alternately, just accept that you got caught, build a bridge and get over it. But then, that is soooooooooo un-NooZeeland ish. Given that you have a detector I guess the chances of you just accepting that you got caught are pretty slim.

It'll be laser not radar and if the guys got a steady hand... well you know how fine a point a laser makes. Probably never went near the X50's sensor particularly at close range.

So you think the calibration would explain the 10 km/hr extra speed you were "alledged" to be doing...??? FIGHT IT... post court results... we love a good laugh.

10 kmh over? What's that, a $20 fine and 10 demerits. Pay up and ignore it.

At the end of the day we have to take their word for it .

he doesn't even know if it was laser or radar.
once upon a time, on a closed, straight peice of road, a highway patrol friend of mine and me did a little experiment. we used stalker in stationary mode, and hand held laser on a mono-pod.
i approached him at random speeds, up to and well over the speed limit. he would 'instant on' me, i had a valentine and a bell wired in (only one on the bike at a time to avoid interference). he would lock as soon as he had clear tone. he pulsed me at random distances.
at a distance of 1000m, i could wash off about 30-50km/h before being locked (still leaving me in licence losing territory)
at 500m he was locking before I could react.
with the laser, i only got 1 out of 10 warnings, and got locked on before i reacted on the 1.
all this, and i was expecting it. a bit tougher when you're toe to toe on the highway :)

I was hit with a laser while stuck behind some slowarse doing like 80k on the open road.
The cop kept it on me as I went right past him at about 20k BELOW the bloody limit.
Shook my head...dick!
Why didn`t ya take off after the car holding everyone up????????
My escort was screaming it`s "laser" warning the whole time, so I recon if you were being pinged by a laser your escort would let you know.

HAND HELD lasers are not under the same rules as radar ... sorry.
Feel free to take it to court... thats NOT free.

Uh. You got pinged by a cop with Laser. Laser is line of sight. He can't target you until he can see you. If he can see you , then you can see him. So you didn't notice a bikie cop up ahead , targeting you (and other traffic)?
Did you spot the bikie cop at all? If so, what did you suppose he was doing out there ? It's called situational awareness. Just be bloody thankful it was ONLY a cop with a laser, not Mabel busy pulling out in front of you. Next time you doze off, it might be Mabel and you'll be dead, not just bleating about a ticket.
I'd have done you for driving without due care and attention , m'self, as well as the speeding.
EDIT: I mount protection. I use it to supplement , not replace the good old Eyeball MKII . And of course, there's always the other option, not speeding.

I'm glad you're not still a cop. The correct penalty is:
The fine for exceeding the speed limit by: Less than 10 KPH $30
Up to 10 KPH over the limit 10 Points lost off your licence.
Exceed the limit between
11 KPH and 15 KPH $80
16 KPH to 20 KPH $120
11KPH and 20 KPH over the limit 20 Demerit Points
21 KPH to 25 KPH $170
26 KPH to 30 KPH $230
21 KPH to 30 KPH 35 Demerit Points
Exceed the limit between
31 KPH to 35 KPH $300
31 KPH to 35 KPH 40 Demerit Points
36 KPH to 40 KPH $400
36 KPH or more over the limit 50 Demerit Points

Bollocks
1-10 kmh costs $30
11 - 15 costs $80
16 - 20 costs $120
21 - 25 costs $170
More than that costs a lot
Not speeding costs nothing. Go figure. Don't speed.

117kmh today, bill for $120 + 20 demerits
I was even nice and polite, and pulled over smartly, really thought I might get a warning since it was a reeeal long straight with no traffic.
Just as well he didn't get me 5 mins earlier

The equipment has to be callibrated. Request the callibration certificate for the radar gun in question. You might just get lucky if the thing is out of spec' and/or outside its certification period. It will only cost you a letter for now.
We are expected to be responsible for keeping our speedo's accurate so they must also play their part in the game.

OK – thanks; especially to those of you that answered my queries. Those of you that are just plain cynical (the ‘don’t speed’ – ‘you have a radar so you must want to speed’ plonkers), go bother someone else. And why didn’t I see the cop? ‘cos he was off his bike, stood under a tree, hiding on the pavement in the shade. His bike behind a car – so don’t go assuming…. You should know that cops are sneaky. So, I’ve learned a bit about laser here, and I’ve learnt that my 8500 is working ok too, and that I can ask for a certificate – thank you to those that have been helpful. It would be good if the rest of you could resist the urge to come back plain nasty.

They are next to impossible to pick up when off of the bike and sitting between cages.
However, dealing with laser really isn't a problem.

dosnt always work, there was a spate in wellington of bike cops in pairs, 1 standing on a motorway overpass and the other parked about 300m down the motorway, also seen 1 doing the old bit out of the movies, wasnt a billboard but was parked behind a sdvertising sign on the side of the road, all you could see was his helmet sticking over it
