Well I thought I might start a thread for ride reports / routes etc for those who may be interested in doing any of them as they pass through going North or South.
Not too many around here that y'all don't know about, but maybe some photos might inspire some to get out there.
Cheers, Buggs.

Well this one is pretty well known from the DB1k. As a 1-dayer the weather was pretty crappy so Zerax and I wizzed up there this arvo for another go at it on a clear day. The weather was perfect, although riding through the Awatere Valley was like sitting behind a jet turbine - very hot and dry.
We didn't really muck around - pretty much 2 hrs return from Blenheim. The track was very dry and fast - still very slippery with peametal and large rocks. Coupled with a 3/4 worn MT21 (really starting to dislike those tyres now) made for some loose slides.
Wind picked up above the snow markers (not a bad thing today!) and was actually quite refreshing at the top. View was bloody brilliant, here's my photos.
Cheers for the ride Z.

Good idea Buggs, be nice to know if you guys are doing anything that might be worth a ride over for.
I know what you mean about the heat, came down the Wairau today and it sucked, only thing that made it interesting was a bee sting (through my leathers) and a small donation request from a man in a blue car with flashing lights.
Must stay away from that valley, gotta be one of the most boring bits of road in the country

I still havent got up Altimarloch on a nice day ,just on the DB1K with a screaming gale and zero viz.
Wanted to shoot up there on thurs on our way to Chch but it would have made too long a day through Molesworth 2 up ,but I did look longingly in that direction as we headed down the coast on the black stuff. (it'll keep)
Got to come back through Rainbow on saturday though :2thumbsup

With all this superb weather it would have been bloody rude not to get out there again this weekend. Zerax and I headed out to Picton, through Waikawa to the hills above Port Underwood heading out to Tory Channel.
We'll look at hosting a KB ride using this route in the near future. It will be more oriented to trail bikes, off rd adv bikes. The big beamers should also be ok but will miss out on having a hell of a good time in the technical and steep stuff :bleh:! There is a range of riding available and you can pick and choose most of it.
The gravel and dust was so powdery at times that we both wondered if we has flatted - the tyres were just sluicing around everywhere...:devil2:
Anyway, t'was about 110 or so kms round trip coming back through Rarangi. Plenty more time could have been spent out towards Tory Channel but we had to get home to the girls...:argue:
Here's te pitchers and a vid of Zerax climbing the track in the last photo:
Video sound is crap thanks to CrapTube.

Bubbsique you bastard. I have spent the last 2 weekends over there at Trevalli Bay (by Opua rd, Hakana) & heard yous going up.
I also took the vid camera & put together a little doco (lots of yakking not much riding:doh:) for a ride report.
When I got back to the bach I told my wife I'll try to organise a KB ride over here. Talk about like minds:stupid:
I'd love to get down to Whataroa on the sthn end of the Arm however will have to get permisson from owners. I have a cussy that is a forestry manager for that area so I'll hit him up.
I went across toawrds the Tory channel end but ended at a locked gate on Jacks Rd? Would be cool to get to the end.
The next time I went up from the Tounge & chose the middle road at the skidder site cos the steep one looked a bit steep for me on my own. I ended up at te repeater station & then carried on down & arround towards the next repeater station.
WHy don't we get a few riders together & have some fun. The only thing Id be cautious of at the mo is the fire danger so maybe in March if it cools off? waddayathink.

This area is on the left of the Wairau River bridge as you leave Renwick heading to Havelock. Entry point is immediately before the bridge on the south side. A mix of river bed, 4wd track, gravel road, and a small amount of singletrack and all sorts of other nooks and crannies to explore. If you enter by Renwick and the water level is low enough you can pick you way all the way up to the Waihopai Valley River (?) bridge on SH63. This is a good little play area if you have time to spare en route.
Other areas along here include the Tuamarina Track (part of the DB1k route) where you can find play areas alongside the river on the northern bank, and also entering on the south side of the Tuamarina Bridge you can ride a good few kms on gravel, riverbed & singletrack up to Selmes Rd, pop out onto Rapaura Rd and head west to Renwick that way. You do have to look for the tracks. If you jsut floow the gravel rds you will bypass them all and wonder where the fun was.
Oh, and the fishin aint half bad either!
Edit thanks to lb99: Note it is a 40km/h speed limit and there are often gravel trucks operating in and around the river areas so keep you wits about you.

be very careful of gravel trucks up there, we have a gravel pit a few ks up as does another business, I am careful when up there but maybe not all drivers are, I have seen a few trucks over the bank over the years, as well as being passed by many that are barely in control......

Hey Padmei, I see you have a hi screen on the green machine. How are you liking it, has it made any difference? what make is it & where from

Dave
Hey Creepy
I made up the screen myself out of a piece of Vyvax (spelling?) I got it from a plastic works place. It is malluable when heated with a heat gun & can be reformed numerous times.
The top of it sits approx 2-250mm above the height of the standard screen. I left the standard screen in place & drilled a couple of mounting holes on one side where the original screws go, then pressing it down when hot, moulded it over to get the shape then smoothed it out & put a little sweep at the top.
It is NOT a professional job but as stated in another post made by me for me.
After riding this weekend approx 700kms I have to say it is brilliant. I can sit behind the screen with my visor up & not have wind straight in my eyes. The wind noise drops significantly but the engine is a lot more noisier:laugh: It is warmer & drier too. It's not everyones cup of tea having a large screen but I personally can't handle naked bikes. If you're inyerested I can post a couple of Pics. It wasn't hard to make.

Zerax and I are heading up there from Blenheim Shell station on Mid Renwick Rd at 9am, meet any filthy Nelsonites who want to tag along at the intersection of SH63 and Leathams Rd (theres a triangular grass island at the intersection) between 9.45 and 10 am. We're heading up Leathams Rd then coming back down and crossing the river (levels permitting) to have a look up the other branch. Seeing how time goes we might have a look at crossing the Wairau onto Northbank rd, levels dependant!

This ride follows a tributary of the upper Wairau River, basically heading south into the hills from The Branch / Lake Argyle. The road is recommended for 4WD only as there are a good handful of deep river crossings. The deepest we experienced today was mid thigh and quite fast flowing. Big bikes might find it a bit of a handful so it pays to try and time the ride following a long dry spell.
Plenty of 4WD's use the road too for hunting access so keep it under control. Plenty of sharp rocks and branches on the road too. Three or four huts along the way, but to be honest we were having too much of a hoot just riding to be bothered stopping...
In short, out back of beyond so ride conservatively and go prepared for most contingencies.
210 km return from Blenheim to the end of the road. For those who have done it, I would liken this ride to Palmer Rd down Springs Junction way, but this is much more rugged.
Pictures:
1. The first serious river crossing.
2. The bypass we found a few hundred metres up river - much shallower.
3. The second serious river crossing (had to drain a carb on this one).
4. The final serious crossing.
5. Typical track shot.
6. Awesome country.
The worst this about the ride is coming home to find the rest of the world still exists... bah.:(

Nah we skipped the Wairau Jeff - had grumpy wives and GF's to come home to, and yeah I reckon it woulda been deepish.
When we're up there next I think we'll have a look down Wadsworth Rd, just along from Lake Argyle. Should be good river access by the looks of it so can hopefully hop skip and jump over to Northbank...just need an egress point!

Ask Cooney what it's like to get across
How far past the last hut did you get ? we drove up there a few years ago and went past the last hut on the "walking track", acrss a slip and the valley opened up nicely, didn't go any further as it was getting late.
I guess you didn't get up the Branch either,

Ask Cooney what it's like to get across ....
Umm ya might want to think about a trials bike. It's not quite that bad but it was interesting trying to get the DR over the 300+mm dia stones. Also the river level when we where there was too high (mid thigh), fast flowing and the large stones were covered in alge. We didn't spend that long looking around but if you have the time head up and down the river a bit and tyou might find a better place to cross. You probably need to go up the Goulter River a bit, then cross it to get onto Northbank Rd I recon.
If you do find a good route I'm keen to hear about it as this was Plan B for the DB1k that was never needed.
Cheers R

Heya Jatz, the final crossing was nearly over zeRax's head so I went it alone for the last couple hundy metres to the hut and turned around there. It actually looked like the track had been closed to vehs with a bit of an obstacle just past the hut so I called it quits there. Looking on Google Earth though it keeps going for ages past the hut. Another day perhaps!
River was a bit deep for the Branch too, so again, another weekend beckons. I was almost going to take a bangstick up too, but thought it best to focus on the riding.

No charge then, it's a public rd ( but that doesn't make much diffrence in some cases i.e. Napoleons hill)

Well the day dawned warm and clear so off we went down Northbank Rd at about 8.30 this morning. Then as we hit the Wairau Bridge it was like being back in the Waikato, riding through chilly, damp, crappy fog for most of the way to the Mt Patriarch turn off. All part of it though.
T'was only the 3rd time taking the Africa Twin into gravel with its new dual purpose tyres. Pretty floaty / skittery on the proper roads, mostly owing to the fact I'm running cheap Vee Rubber & Kenda tyres, ha. :oi-grr:
Was impressed though, she seemed to bite in fine once I gave it a bit of wrist action and threw her around a bit heading up towards Lake Chalice. Topo and zeRax were giving it snot too and soon left me behind while I got comfortable treating the XRV like a thumper. Found the power was awesome around 5-6.5k rpm in the uphills, otherwise it was equally alive, just more sedate chugging away down at 3-4k rpm.
Anyways, a few photo stops along the way and smoked salmon on toast at the top made it a pretty chilled out ride. Great country up there.
Got a bit of video on the in-law's flash-as handy cam wot I stole (and later got bailed up by the Mrs when I showed her the vids ). Will post another couple up once my lame XNet upload speed gets around to it!
Topo left us after Mt P as Z Meister and I headed to Onamalutu to offer the Africa Twin to the Hillclimb gods. Wish I had filmed the other two we did - was jsut awesome - hell of a rush!
Didn't have the kahunas to put it up my favourite firebreak (visions of shettered plastics, dented tank, twisted wheels) but I was stoked with how well it hauled its arse up some pretty steep access tracks, and when we ran out of tracks we just made one - right up the side of a hill to the main track above. Honestly, it rides like a f*cken big trailbike! Very impressed by it...20 years old, full of breakable fairings etc etc, but yeah, a very solid performer!
Chucked it though a mudbog too - wouldn't want to get it stuck (thought I had for abour 2 secs) but it pulled through piece of piss.
So now I just need to sort out why my front cylinder is running so rich and giving such poor fuel economy...
More vids to follow!

Lower tyre pressures might have helped, I was running road pressures. I was getting traction off idle but then wheelspin, despite trying all sorts to keep the revs down. 1st gear, 4th gear, didn't matter the bike behaved the same!!
Still impressed with the Bridgy ED661 front. It's worn to buggery but still grips in the dirt and is surprisingly confidence-inspiring on wet tar.

bent footpegs
broken brake lever
bent gear lever
chip out of clutch dome thingy, not important
fuckered rear brakes, bent lever that many times, and i think someything is fuckered in the drum area as adjustment is just gone completely.
footpegs stopped returning well enough so it was a real prick getting them to fold out while trying to move along, argh!

OK, with a rested but achey body and a belly full of food & coffee...
FUCK WHAT A RIDE!!! At the time it was actually pretty shitty and I dunno about Kyle but I had really had enough of the front wheel popping out under me and dropping the bike.
We were pretty conscious that time was getting on (it was already mid afternoon) and I knew the weather was supposed to get worse. Kyle and I deliberated on it for a minute or two. It was literally the fork in the road between Adventure vs Sensible / Safe. Adventure called.
the weather was like in Fran's photo below for most of the way up and all the way back.
http://i627.photobucket.com/albums/tt354/Undergroundbikepics/SV400208.jpg
I had a bit of food, heaps of water, fire and spare clothes, along with the usual survival kit of silver blankets, whistle, first aid etc so that gave extra confidence.
The bikes were taking big hits everytime we arsed off. Kyle lost his front brake lever and we spent 10 mins getting his rear to work again,,,damn soft tubular steel. Even the AT's engine bars took a walloping ...but saved the fairings of course!
The biggest "adventure" part of the day came in two parts really. The first was negotiating the Basin. I didn't take any photos here as I was too busy marvelling at Kyle's tyre tracks and their proximity to the edge and blubbering to myself as the AT chugged through the snow, getting sporadic grip on the jagged rocks I knew were underneath. The Basin? you ask. Here it is in summer. Now just reduce your visibility to 20m, add half a foot of snow and let your imagination do the rest. The hit here was that it was a very "real risk" - none of this ponsy "perceived risk" stuff. It was a long way down and although you couldn't see it I knew it was there!
The Basin:
<a href="http://s204.photobucket.com/albums/bb200/buggsubique/?action=view¤t=DSC03913.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb200/buggsubique/DSC03913.jpg" border="0" alt="Don't fall!"></a>
<a href="http://s204.photobucket.com/albums/bb200/buggsubique/?action=view¤t=DSC03914.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb200/buggsubique/DSC03914.jpg" border="0" alt="Basin section"></a>
The second realisation of adventure was 5 minutes after arriving at the summit and beginning to cool down. The weather was also coming in harder too, with drizzle turning to sleet to snow and the light beginning to reduce. Again, the real risk here was manageable but with cell phone batteries cold and getting low (remember turn em off when you have no reception otherwise they are earching the whole time!) I was only able to get one text out to Underground to let him know we made it. Kyle sent one home but I couldn't get reception any longer as the weather had worsened. Would have been good to get one home myself. Not sure how a "find me spot" box would have gone for sat reception, but on a ride like this it would have been the ideal bit of kit to let the missusus know we were sweet as.
The ride back down was just a matter of perseverance. Heaps of falls and swearing, a bit of pucker factor once in a while and a fair bit of "can't wait to get home!"
Kyle had switched the CT to reseve half way down and finally sucked it dry half way out along Northbank so the AT mothership breastfed a couple of litres on the side of the road - enough to get back to Blenheim.
Welcomed home by anxious wife and excited kids wondering what had happened. That sort of thing is always in the back of my mind, but fuck yesterdays ride was living. You gotta do that once in a while aye. ;)

i'd also like to add that i have lost the nut and dome from side cover of my ct, must have come loose again after the many many rear brake lever bendingupages. so i lost a bit of oil on the way home, havent taken side cover off yet, but clutch adjustment had changed too, she'll be fine thou :)

Na - ya get just as wet but from the inside out cause of all the lifting and pushing.I'd just washed and re-activated the waterproofing on my gear, only to wet it from the inside out. :bash: I was soaked in sweat from the pushing, rocking, kicking and the odd lift. Got pretty cold on the way home, hadn't re-adjusted the waist of the jacket so it was very draughty. Back of my shirt was still soaked. :cold: Feet were dry though :niceone: but the heated grips on high were too painful to hang on too. I think they did the trick of opening the capillaries so the back of your hand freezes and the palm burns. Low was tolerable but didn't feel warm.

Knobblie tyres also.

so anyone riding over here this weekend? I'm stuck with my two mini-me's for the weekend while Mrs Buggs plays squash. If there's another attempt on Mt P or Atm though I'll come along in the surf for sausages and hot coffee support.

did you get snow up your nuts when you gave me a shove nordie :rofl:
Next time im going to try warewolf's suggestion of wrapping rope around the rim (worked for me on a truck) bugger the small bike idea , thats too easy.
Must get our communications worked out a bit better next time , because it was raining I didnt get my phone out till I got home to recieve buggs's message and he got home around the same time as me so it was fairly irrelevant at that stage , but good to know that they had managed to 'knock the bastard off'
The rope trick [ 1/2 inch tow rope] works real good as we had to do it on an fj1200 yamaha to get into Canaan downs some years ago for our mid winter campout ,took us over an hour to get 4 bikes up a hundred metre steepish climb, the Ural side car units made it with a lot of pushing and laughs and they were made for this type of riding in the land of Russia. Great fun in the snow though, I have been told by old guys that you increase trye pressures in snow -ice to keep the tread profile up where as in sand you lower the pressures to get surface area up , worth a try.
I'm in Motueka on holiday at the moment..... But alas without my bike. Almost got the hiace stuck up mount Arthur yesterday though. Was quite deep snow in the carpark.

Well, since I've moved (sort of) to Wellington I've started Blogging (blogging sounds gay, so lets make up some other staunch sounding term for it). Today was breaking the @ back in on Altimarlock while trying out the new Helmet cam. Havent edited the vid down yet, but cam is cool. ANyone got any free (and obviously decent) video editing software?
Cheers Buggs

once on ct110 spending day going up in foot odd of snow, other time with klx400r with super tanker assuming she'll be right cause i could see fuel :P

About 140km I think , If your pissy little tanks won't get you that far either bring a can and stash it along the way or a hose and I'll make sure theres enough in the mother ship .

Big thanks to Underground for today's guided tour of Mt Patriach. zeRax was there too but spent most of the day either on his knees or under a rock, chundering or sleeping - it must have been a good night!
We rode up to 1,400m in brilliant sunshine with spectacular views. An amazing place for adv riding, right at Blenheim's back door.

God damn altitude sickness
When i had the stock WRR tank I got between 120 -140 km to the reserve light and 200 nearly dry (7.2l). The Safari tank gives peace of mind 300+ and radiator protection :innocent:

Looks like it was a great ride. Struan popped in to see us at the bach but pissed off before we could get a paintbrush in his hand -bloody bludger. The sound of the mighty DT got all the boys excited so the chainsaws started up straight after he left.

Yip, that Port Underwood Rd is awesome & I timed it perfectly - calm, sunny Sunday morning & no other traffic. The hard pack gravel was fast & the scenery with all the sheltered bays is very picturesque. The Padmei clan crib is a real gem too - thanks again Craig for the coffee & catch-up.
Picked up this beast in Nelson this morning (the DT is hiding behind it).
The Husky looks fast just sitting on my trailer, so fast in fact that a conniving cunstable thought that my trailer was going too quick (infringement notice has got your name on it Jezza).

Hi heading down to Blenheim on the 22 nov for work, there for 2 weeks min. Can get the bike down for free on the back of the truck, would have to pay for return ferry trip. Looking for a medium challenging track around the area suitable for a sunday blast or a early evening squirt after work. If everything pans out and I can afford a new back tyre it will be a good chance for the bike to revisit the south.
