New to these forums in a way as I don't surf the net much.. never heard of Babes on Bikes but would love to know more. I see they had a meet in Dec.. surely there's one before Apr/May? There should be with all this fine weather no?
Who organises them?
thanks

Babes on Bikes 17
Saturday 28 March 2009
Theme: Fish wives
If you would like to ride with the group riding from Timaru, Caltex service station (south end) at 9am.
Turn inland at Waimate turnoff (at Nosh restaurant) and rumble through Waimate before winding our way out through the Waimate Gorge to Kurow. From Kurow, we head back toward the coast via Duntroon. After Duntroon, turn right and cruise a few KM to a stop at the elephant rocks. If you have never see elephant rocks, then prepare yourself for something surreal... These are natural weathered limestone rock towers, which bulge out of a basin of close cropped grass. The whole thing looks like a drunken chess board and the feeling there is most definitely spooky. For the movie "Narnia" Aslans camp was filmed here
Next stop is Oamaru for lunch, at the bridge cafe (South end of the main street opposite the clock tower) Getting from Oamaru to Moeraki, normally we would suggest riding along the beautiful coast road to Kakanui... BUT... For anyone who doesn't think climate change is a reality... beach road has suffered from coastal erosion, and large parts of it have fallen into the sea... prompting the local roading authorities to close the road!! So sorry guys but its highway one for the final leg of the trip...
Accommodation at Moeraki
The recommended accommodation is in holiday homes, booked through the Moeraki beach motels ph (03) 439 4862. All bedding and linen is supplied. The motels are fully booked this weekend but can access a range of local holiday homes. Depending on which holiday home you book into, the cost is likely to be $40 or less per person. It’s a good idea to get a group together before you book so you can fill a house and all be together.
Evening meal at Moeraki:
There are three options
Because the accommodation is by way of holiday homes, you can choose to bring your own food and cook by yourself
If you really want to push the boat out, then you can dine at Fleurs Place. Dinner is $50 per head for a starter and a main course. The main course is a choice of fish or beef or a Mediterranean vegetarian pasta. Dinner is served at 7.30 PM
If you wish to dine at Fleurs place, then you need to phone and book by 25 Feb. Ph (03) 4394480 and tell them you are with Babes on Bikes
If you wish to dine at the Moeraki Tavern, they serve a good range of pub style meals at pub prices. They would like us to dine at 6.30. You should phone and book by 18th March and tell them you are with Babes on Bikes. Ph (03) 439 4705
Well that’s a bloody great amount of information! I hope it is all you need to know in order to have a fabulous weekend at Moeraki. If not being the resourceful women that we are, I'm sure we will figure it out!!
For more info or to get on our mailing list phone Lynda (03) 6894 777 or Wendy (03) 684 3958

What an awesome weekend. The weather treated us to many challenges, sideways down the road, wee bit of rain, some caught a major dust storm, only thing missing was lightening and hail I think! A very helpful guy flashed his lights to me indicating the presence of you know what. A joke I thought, as I was struggling to keep up to 80kph and upright! However it made the wine when I got there taste even better. After a couple more the nerves were settled and it was down to the Ranch to meet the other Tacky Tourists. What a crowd of the most unusually dressed people All having a great time and very friendly. After a wonderful meal we headed down town (!) to The Moose where a local band was playing and everyone took over the dance floor. Later on the courtesy coach took our weary bodies home, after dropping off some other bikers who had come from Dunners via the Nevis and Catlins. Apparently three seperate groups on bikes in Te Anau at the weekend. Had a much better ride home today, used only half the amount of petrol!
Looking forward to the next run with these ladies. Would recommend it to anyone willing to get in and involved. Even meet some others from Ingill and surrounding areas.
Thanks to the ladies from Timaru etc who organised this event. Looking forward to the next one, although if it is the North Island, while I like the idea, I can pretty much say I wont be able to go. Sadly too many other commitments for that distance. Will certainly pick up on the next one after that tho.

sounds like a good time had by all, would be great if the next ride could be at the top of the south island, or in the middle somewhere! I agree, the north is too much for many, not just the distance but the cost of taking your bike there and bike is silly.

I understand it usually goes higher in the Island then lower. Just a case of keeping eyes and ears open and catching it when you can get there. Well worth going to meet some awesome people.

Will keep that in mind, although was thinking of getting up to friends at Cave Friday night so the start on Saturday wouldn't be quite as early! Depends on weather tho. Not sure how late to leave booking and committing to it.

Had an awesome weekend, still getting home. We had the Logde at Methven fully booked out and some stayed in other accomodation as well, so great numbers this year. They estimated about 70 in total counting day tripers. Great locals in Methven all out for their AMP show so were ready for a good time that night! Riding with the ladies was excellent, best group ride of that size I've ever done. Thanks girls, looking forward to the next one.
