Thinking about getting a helmet cam but not to sure what sort to get.
i have seen a couple different sorts online and want some real world comments.
have any of you had them caught up in bush while trail riding or had them get smashed when you crash.
what about the quality of the camera you use and price.

cheers Karl

got one of these bulky sound is not that great neither are the fitting attachments if mounted to the bike it will switch off after a few second dew to the vibrations better of with camera that has seperate storage system form the lense. Motocom make a good one heaps of bit and attachments you can play back on its own screen but is $$$ good 500-600

I went for one of these http://www.aiptek.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=AHD21X&Category_Code=HDC&Store_Code=AS

It's just on under the strap of my goggles.

Pro's - 60Hz 720p HD video, robust, cheap
Con's - Turning on/off is not easy, no remote control, 2 hour battery life

Sample footage http://vimeo.com/2420962

I've got one. I just don't know what to do with all of the files it creates. Editing software has got me completely flummoxed, so I haven't got any further than accumulating multitudinous gigabytes of raw footage.

And if anybody can recommend an idiot-proof and intuitive piece of editing software that is also (ideally) free or very cheap, I would be thankful.

Where do you race the car Scott? Believe it or not, my girls have never been to a speedway... I used to hang out at Te Marua years ago (anyone remember they only had one song, "work your fingers to the bone"). Loved the ride over from Waikanae... :niceone:

Be more interesting if we can cheer someone we know....... :first:

I have one as well but have experienced none of the problems you mention...although I agree the sound is relatively primitive....I mount the camera on the end of the handle bar. It doesn't switch off....

Difference is you are usin it for road. If you use it off road there is a lot more shakin and it switchs off.

I can't understand it at all, despite trying on several occasions to get it to do stuff.

You are absolutely right...now that I think of it, the only time I went over a really bad gravel road, it DID switch off after a bit. I believe you can wedge the batteries in and the problem goes away....(or so I read somewhere....)

Similar problem occurs with GPS units on adventure rides and (IIRC) solutions included making sure all the contacts had a good coating of dielectric grease and setting the batteries in a bed of silicone. That seemed to fix both the coming lose and poor contact problems.

those are the GoPro cameras that have already been mentioned, I use one and its really good, just have to get the mounting spot on straight or it looks like you right with your head to one side, I think its good because its so small, runs off aaa batteries and has a removeable 2gb sd card, so you can ride for as long as the batteries and card lasts, in saying that Iv never run out of either
It has lots of functions, like you can tell it to record unpsidedown if you mount it undersomething, hi-lo quality sound, etc you can change all these on the camera
Also comes with quite a few mounts, a curved one, a flat one, a strap that goes around your head for push bike helmets
Ours cost about $350 with the better mounting base and some rechargeable aaa batteries, got it from the racetech display at the speedshow
I will use it to record my second lap of the MR cycles ride on sunday

Yeah I was there last night. My Brother in law used to work for Lance Beale so we were having a chat to him last night and got to have a good look inside the cars. They are so cramped! I never realised how small it is inside!

I have got the same helmet camera (look at http://www.youtube.com/user/PumptNZ for cut down internet footage i took)
I also couldn't figure it out, but found Windows Movie Maker (just search in the "help" on your computer) It is awesome, and is really simple for non techo types like me...and you by the sounds of it.. Have fun!

I know what you are saying.

The biggest issue is understanding the terms used. I don't think any of them are intuitive and although I have never used it windows movimaker is probably as good as anything until you know what you are doing.
