Today when all has a label, what is left that can be called Rock?

From Wikipedia" Rock music — or simply rock — is a loosely defined genre of popular music that developed during and after the 1960s. It has its roots in 1940s and 1950s rock and roll and rockabilly, which themselves evolved from rhythm and blues, country music and other influences. In addition, rock music drew on a number of other musical influences, including folk music, jazz, and classical music.

The sound of rock often revolves around the electric guitar or acoustic guitar, and it uses a strong back beat laid down by a rhythm section of electric bass guitar, drums, and keyboard instruments such as organ, piano, or, since the 1970s, synthesizers. Along with the guitar or keyboards, saxophone and blues-style harmonica are sometimes used as soloing instruments. In its "purest form", it "has three chords, a strong, insistent back beat, and a catchy melody."[1]

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, rock music developed different subgenres. When it was blended with folk music it created folk rock, with blues to create blues-rock and with jazz, to create jazz-rock fusion. In the 1970s, rock incorporated influences from soul, funk, and latin music. Also in the 1970s, rock developed a number of subgenres, such as soft rock, glam rock, heavy metal, hard rock, progressive rock, and punk rock. Rock subgenres that emerged in the 1980s included New Wave, hardcore punk and alternative rock. In the 1990s, rock subgenres included grunge, Britpop, indie rock, and nu metal.

A group of musicians specializing in rock music is called a rock band or rock group. Many rock groups consist of an electric guitarist, lead singer, bass guitarist, and a drummer, forming a quartet. Some groups omit one or more of these roles and/or utilize a lead singer who plays an instrument while singing, sometimes forming a trio or duo; others include additional musicians such as one or two rhythm guitarists and/or a keyboardist. More rarely, groups also utilize stringed instruments such as violins or cellos, or horn sections of saxophones, trumpets or trombones."

So that would then settle it. Anything goes. Cool.

Scorpions
Y & T
Disturbed
Deep Purple

...and oodles more of them.

Got everything they have ever done. Probably easier to say my least favourite release eg Roll the Bones.

Great band, pure quality. Maybe the best trio anywhere in music today.

The votes tell the story, well almost....
Pink Floyd with 11 out of 44 votes =25% so why is the percentage showing 55%

Edit: Answer. Because the multiple choice has allowed some voters to cover all bases by voting for most of the choices:doh:

Cheers Dave.
I have heard very good reviews of the new album. Recorded while on the road with a maximum of 8 takes per song.
The storytelling is something that Bruce does very well. "The ghost of Tom Joad" stands out. Live, with just guitar and harmonica... amazing.
The E Street band in full flight, is something to behold!
I can see WoAD being purchased soon.

Pink Floyd sure don't get my feet stomping......

Doro belongs ranked up their with the greats, The power and sound of her voice is just stunning. Blows me away every time I track down something so far undiscovered (to me) on Youtube.

Queen tick all the boxes: a significant number of great albums, have one of the most famous guitar rock solos, sporting anthems, movie soundtracks, great live band, transferable musical talent across various music styles... etc etc etc..

Oh, and they were highly educated and intelligent. Although it relavancy is questionable in this threads context.

If there wasn't the homosexuality associated with the group, they would've buried the rest.

They bury them anyway.

Err, Queen, Def Leppard, Led Zep, Bon Jovi etc.

To be fair its amazing how many of todays band quote Lizzy as a major influence. Lynott pissed his life away tho, what a waste.

Interestingly nobody ever admits to liking Coldplay, except JR of course, yet they sell besquillions of albums, must be a lot of closet Coldplay fans

Also interesting, maybe, is the fact that Floyd and Zeppelin are way ahead on the poll yet I hardly ever hear them playing unless I'm playing them?

Finally and of no interest at all, I once passed an MOT, the equivalent of your WOF, because I had left Dark side of the moon playing on the CD, The mechanic said I passed as soon as he turned the ignition on. Sweet!

More videos please, rock on.

Nah, just taking the piss, CP actually sucks but they're not a rock band, just a group of tiresome fags.

Bought 'Working on a Dream' today.
Likewise, yesterday.
Certainly some stunners in there!
A brief reference back to The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle album, but I wonder if there is something still lingering from the Darkness album.
I didn't feel that The East St Band was at "max power" although it is a damn fine record. Damn, Max Weinberg is good!
A fine tribute to Dan Federici.

I disagree. You don't get to be a vituoso without heaps of talent AND effort. I think that a lot bands today are poor musically. In the old days bands used to have to go on 40 date tours to earn their stripes even before getting a record contract. By the time they got to the studio generally they were tight live and their playing was perfected since studio time was so expensive. Nowadays Pro Tools, vocoders, sampling etc. can make everyone sound like a star. The older musos had to play their instruments because there was not so much technology to hide behind.

How does a band get to be great? It is usually when an artist produces an acclaimed body of work. I like Pantera, RATM and Metallica but 9, 4 and 9 albums don't get a greatest rock band ticket from me just yet. By way of comparison the Stones, Sabbath and Rush have 63 studio albums between them and they are still producing music today.

That probably expalins why the bands on the list are older, you have to have the material to make a decision. YMMV

And your point is?

Mind you, I was a bit disconcerted to see Pink Floyd leading a poll for greatest rock band. They were clever musicians and everything, but ... didn't they take themselves just a little too seriously?

Dude.

Metallica have been going for 28 years. So have Pantera.
18 for RATM. 21 for NIN.

It ain't about how long ago they played their music. Good music is timeless.

One day when you grow up and expand your mind you'll realise.

Pretty much what riffer has said.

Hence why people still listen to Mozart and Beethoven to this day.

I wonder if people will be listening to all of the current bands in 200+ years

Not likely.

Pearl Jam are definitely in my top division and I think will be the only band from the Seattle / grunge scene to have the potential to still be filling stadia in 20 years.

Oasis don't have that longevity factor sure, but you can't take away from them the fact that they were responsible for one of the greatest debut albums ever.

ECT? Who are they?

yeah fair enough. my post may have come on a bit strong. My take was that the poll only included bands that have long since expirerd (mostly). I think what was said about beethoven isn't entirely correct. He was huge in his day... ie. most people listened to him as there wasn't as much varied taste or choice in music. He and others from that time pioneered a whole genre of music. Rock was pioneered (for the masses) by Elvis (and others) and people still listen to this. As the generations die so does the mass popularity of the music they listened too. When i'm 40 i'll probably be trying to convince 25 year olds that Queens of the stone age are "the greatest rock band of all time" this could go on and on. I'm sure ya know what i mean 'cos i've kinda forgotten what i was saying.... should really get back to work now, lol

Fuck work. There will still be people who listen to led zep and there will still be people who listen to Oasis (even though they're shit) but something newer and "better" is guaranteed to come
