When to rebuild a 250?

Hey all, my sons wanting to buy a 250 but unsure of what would be a good learners bike. He has been told that they need rebuilding after a certain mileage, is this the case & is there much involved?

Sounds like the person he was talking to was meaning a two stroke two fifty, they require top end work anywhere from every 10000 km to 30000km depending on how it is tuned.

A four stroke two fifty thatis lovingly maintained and looked after i,e serviced regularly, oil kept nice and clean, filters etc should do a lot of kms. I would expect at least 100000 km out a two fifty four stroke or more before tope end rebuilding needs to be done. Again the engine must be looked after, mistreating it would obviously reduce that.

unles its a 250 2 stroke or a 250 4stroke dirt bike like a crf or rmz the engine will be sweet as very a long time.
i did about 40,000kz on my 250 when i had it and it and the engine was mint if not better

Depends on the bike too within those previously mentioned subsets ... (eg, two stroke - 4 stroke 4 cylinder etc). Just looking at 4 stroke 4 cylinder bikes, if it's the sort of bike that is probably inclined to be thrashed a bit (eg a ZXR250) then that'll probably be going to the doctors long before a bike like Mrs Oakie's mild mannered CB250FM (aka Jade).

Generally they need work about a fortnight after you sell them to a learner "as new, one careful lady owner".

My TU250 (4-stroke single) just needed her first major work at around 50,000 km. Poor little darling should have done better than that but apparently someone thrashed her. :shutup:

As people have said, a reasonably simple first bike, well maintained (it's part of the learning process!) should last for many happy years of riding before needing anything other than general servicing.

Send the boy along here and we'll set him straight! :2thumbsup

Usually a fairly big service every 40 to 50 thou and a well looked after 250 should get to 100 thou easy.

My friends ZXR250 had done 118,000km without a rebuild and was still making good power. The suspension freshened up at the 90,000km mark and in the end the bikes only demise was an electrical gremlin, but after 118,000km and more than a few nights left outside that can be expected.

If you're reasonably mechanically minded you can get someone to show you or your son how to do a top end rebuild. Without the labor it will turn out pretty cheap and it's easy to do in less than an hour if you know how. This is for two strokes though.
