Stupid newbie questions...

Gidday all.

After my recent bike crash, ive got the option of buyin my old (written off) fxr150. As far as i can tell/remember all it needs is new forks and new tank before it is in working condition. Just wondering whats involved in getting set up to race it as a bucket? If theres anyone in the hawkes bay that could come have a look at the bike with me and discuss things i would be very grateful!

Basically what i want to know is...

What is needed in terms of specs of the bike?
Where are races/meets held?
Is it even worth buying the bike back and fixing it up?

Even if i dont race i would love to get stuck into the mechanics side of thing, im fairly adept with the basics, but never really tutu'd with the specifics... and definately keen on tweaking things for the fun of it...

how much are they trying to sting you for the wreck

the tank looks fine to me as long as it dosent leak or fall off

if you want to sell it how much I know a few people that want the engine for a spare

its up for auction, so between $100 and $200 for it. i think ill get it anyway. like you say, its still got a fair bit in terms of parts...
As for reselling, im not sure. its got two brand new tyres id put on 4 days before the crash... and the engine as far as i know was mint. ill pm you when/if i get it and go from there eh?

At double that it is a farkin bargin. As buckets for me said if the tamk doesnt leak it is fine, even if it dont look the best.

Biggest issue will be finding a set of forks, they aint all that easy to find as most wreked FXR's end there life in a very simular way.

But thats a perfect excuse to graft on some flash forks of an NSR or somthing....

I rode an FXR at Roys Hill today and I can say for certain al you need to do to make it a real decent bucket is to nylon it up and race prep it and make sure you have decent tyres.
Then learn to ride ride it fast.
I found the rider was by far the weakest link today and I ain't THAT slow!

Well, i checked it over at the auction house, and for it to be ridable again, all it needs is a new front rim and forks...

Sooo... what forks are KNOWN to fit onto an fxr?

I would think maybe RG150 ones (although they too end their lives in a similar way), earlier model 250 sports bike (ie non-USD). I think from memory the forks are 33mm as I looked at grafting a set onto my RGV150-framed bucket but they were too big, so a forkbrace was made instead.

The ones I know for sure are the RG150, and the 88 GSXR250.

Through my investigation I also beleave the RGV VJ21, and 22 use the same stearing head beering meaning they are also a poosible match. But I have never has a set of those anywhere near my bike to try so dont know for sure.

As mentioned the FXR has 33mm forks as standard, both the options mentioned are a bigger fork so will require the steering stem and triple clamps to suit. The RG150 is a 35mm fork and the GSXR is 41mm. You may need a GSXR wheel, axle, spacers etc and brake caliper though. Not sure if the FXR caliper will bolt onto GSXR/RG fork legs?
Buddha#81 was selling a complete FXR front end off his FXR race bike, not sure if hes still got it?

well, ive got to get the bike first. as far as i know it goes up for auction next monday... but definately things are looking up towards fixing it up enough to race :)

Sorry should have made that clear. All the models I mentioned was based on bolting a complete front end on at the stearing stem.

The FXR wheel and brakes will fit on a RG150 front end, all you need to do is make up a spacer to replace the speedo drive, as the FXR drive doesnt fit the RG forks and the RG drive doesnt fit the FXR wheel.

thats algud, ive been doing a fair bit of homework and figured a whole triple clamp would be the best way to go.. as for the wheel, i need a new one anyway so ill get whatever suits the forks lol

According to the auctioneer im the only one so far thats shown any interest in it, and it runs as a general auction, highest bid wins...

Not yet, they still havnt released it for auction, and theres still an insurance dispute going on over it as well :argue::Pokey: the gits that salvaged my bike, with no authorisation from either myself or the police, have gone to baycorp to try and recover the cost.... go figure lol


Still want to get it though...
