Attention all KiwiBikers;

If it flies, floats or turns wheels and heads, it is bound to be at Whitianga on the weekend of April 4 & 5.

Destination Mercury Bay in conjunction with Whitianga Waterways Limited have announced plans to create a Festival of Speed over the weekend of April 4 & 5 2009.

Fast boats, cars, motorcycles and aircraft will all be part of the action.
Already Asphalt Assault are booked. Among the activity there will be novelty races between helicopters and motorcycles and rally cars in adrenalin filled action events.

The event will coincide with an NZ Offshore Power Boat series race being held on that weekend.

The concept is to create a number of events using adrenalin pumping machinery such as fast boats, cars, motorcycles and aircraft.

Items include jet sprint boats, free style jet skiing, thunder cats, aerobatic displays, helicopter skill demonstrations, sky diving, aircraft rally, car and motorcycle club events, (off road and on road) 4 wheel driving events, go carts, speed way racing to name just a few. The program will continue to develop and be finalized closer to the event date.

It is hoped to have many of the participants arrive on the evening of Friday April 3 to an official welcome. Getting there will be part of the fun and many may use the travel aspect of the event to create an informal rally.

Saturday morning will begin with a parade through Whitianga’s main street coinciding with a mass flyover.

The main street will become a focal point of the festival with a number of activities taking place there.

Saturday night will see a "Rolling thunder" parade of bikes through the main street.

Free admission

As there will be no admission fees for the entertainment it is bound to attract a lot of interest. However, donations to local service groups and organizations that will provide much of the organizational manpower will be gratefully accepted.
