View Full Version : vB 3.8 upgrade

SpankMe
3rd February 2009, 20:43
Site software now upgraded to vB 3.8.1.

There are many new features and improvements to existing functionality in vBulletin 3.8.0 over vBulletin 3.7.x. Here is a brief list of just a few of the highlights.

Social group threads
Social group categories
Private message sorting and filtering
Private message history
Quick edit for newer types of content (visitor messages and picture comments)
Social group icons
Social group transfers
Private message quick reply
Private message reporting
Profile privacy (limit blocks to a subset of users)
Lightbox navigation

I will also be updating some of the other modules over the next week or so. I will also be transferring the site blogs to vBulletin's own blog software.

As usual, any problems, post'em here.

Social groups seem to be gone from the quick links.

They are under community now.
The social group layout is rather different.

What's with the dirty big ? next to my avatar?

And the green rep bling seems to have multiplied too.

The social group icons are cool.

The posts in the social groups are in backwards order. The new ones are at the end which is a pain.

I thought it was to replicate the way a thread behaves. As long as you can get to the first unread post in the social group that should work ok.

Hmmm - multiple conversations within communities - me likeee!

ta!

Plus the bling makes even me look popular - hey look! I have as many green squares as Dan Dan the attention whore man! :2thumbsup:

I think the default setting (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/faq.php?faq=vb3_board_usage#faq_vb3_thread_display ) is oldest posts first.

What I can't find is a quick view that shows when each group was last posted in, so I know if I need to open the group or not.

But if social groups are now threaded ought they not to follow the same rules as other threads.

I find it very chaotic... Mine too...

I have 5 unapproved messages in my notifications. I have not set the social group up so I have to approve messages and I cant actually see any that look different, or where to even approve them if they are there. What am I doing wrong?

Edit: Is it because I have 5 pending members?

Every "upgrade" seems to add a myriad of stuff that adds little, if any, value to the user experience, and just makes the good old stuff harder to find and fiddle with. Progress. Sigh.

Sounds like you just described most software updates!

I can see how its an improvement in features, but I'm with Hitcher that things are getting really complex (navigating through 4 social grips involved countless clicks).

Is it possible to add a "first new post" type button (like normal threads) to the social group threads? Or perhaps a status page for your social groups that list which ones have new posts, with links to take you right there (Basically like New Posts I guess...). I know I for one don't go through every sub forum looking for new posts, I just clear out the New Posts list.

Otherwise, thanks for the work Spank, I can imagine it ain't a piece of piss.

I think some have also been affected by the colour of rep issue a few posts up.

It has all that, look harder. :p

:slap: Trying to find it now...

TBR group (you know... that one) does show up as a random group, not sure if you want that.

Until someone posts something new, so I can see where it occurs... would it also be possible to list the status of each group where the "My Groups" is (ie, in terms of whether or not there are new posts)? Apologies if this is the case, I just can't see anything new has been posted, so not sure yet.

Would be handy if the page numbers can be shown at the top of the discussion as well as the bottom... saves scrolling to the bottom to navigate pages for the ultra lazy amongst us

What is the difference please between friends and contacts in the context of profile privacy?

I believe friends will be able to see the more personal details, such as real name, any next of kin etc...

Oddly enough, only friends are listed in the profile (as you, you have x friends), so I have more contacts than friends, as I don't want everyone knowing my details anyway

edit: hmmmm there are private fields, but clicking on say, spank's profile, there are also these words: "Viewable only by members in your Contacts & Friends list."

Your avatar makes me nauseous so I actually couldn't read the site changes. Can you make it censored or something?

Slyer
4th February 2009, 20:03
Yeah. I don't like the social group changes.
We in the SMC have our own forum in which to post up about events and discussions etc
We have a social group as well which we use sort of a postit board, lots of little posts of stuff that we feel like saying to everyone but doesn't need its own thread or anything...
Now with the changes we sortof have two forums except one is far far less functional and useful.

PirateJafa
4th February 2009, 20:47
Well Sam, we could of course just keep posting spam in the main thread.

Kendog
4th February 2009, 20:54
I can't find a simple way to see new post details on social groups either.
This used to show in one page when selecting Social Groups from the quick links, without the need to select every group to check if there has been a post or not.

Kendog: You'll note the the group name will become bold when there are new unread messages in the social group.

Play nice... if you had read everything in all the groups, and nothing had been posted, you wouldn't have a clue...

yes... same thing happened to me

Typed a long post and pressed "Post Quick Reply" and this happened. When I pressed "Back", the reply was all gone. :Oi:

I've always wondered the wisdom of having to click "quick" or "multi" before you can reply, it's not like this forum has other types of sorting for the post, it's all in chronological order, so why can't it just be a plain text entry box so when I press back my browser can enter the text I typed into the box instead of having it go to /dev/null as you have to click on either "multi" or "quick" before you reply

to stop bots spamming, i suspect

whenever i make a long post, i just copy it to a .txt file before submitting ;)

No problems, loving the changes in Bitches apart from one small thing. I have 5 unapproved messages in a group that I dont have to approve messages in. Picking it was something to do with the upgrade, be good if they disappeared.
