Anyone else get this letter from MNZ?
Basically it says there will be enforcement of the no quick shifter rule. Which is fantastic, and I am all for it. However, why would you send a bulletin out about what they are going to enforce before enforcing it?
It is sorta like saying we are going to be checking cylinder heads for signs of skimming, so make sure your std head is back on.
It is stupid to give people who break the rules a heads up that certain things will be enforced.
What are peoples thoughts on this?

Well youd be pretty pissed if you were using quick shift and they didnt warn you. Turn up to a race meet and get disqualified... especially after the effort and travelling most people do to get to races...

Sounds fair enough to me. Better for people to not be breaking the rules instead of wasting time shooting those that do.

I was unaware it was already a rule. From the first post I was under the impressions that it was a new rule being enforced. my bad.

I understand where you are coming from with this post Maido, as all the riders in the sth Island were informed @ Ch Ch to clarify the Ruke RE No Quick shifters in this class or the SB class.
Perhaps the letter was intended as a follow up to the announcement to all but guarantee NO one is STILL cheating!
I do think it is a good thing to do, as MNZ nor the organising clubs have the time or the money to do full mechanical strips checks of all bikes, so if any one is wankerish enough to cheat with these parts still, they deserve a very hard kicking.

There was acouple of funny sounding bikes down south dude, in the SB class as well!

I see what you mean there, I forgot they mentioned it at the breifing, if it is meant as a follow up then kudos to MNZ for doing it.
I just took it as they are definately going to be checking so make sure there is nothing wrong so we have to disqualify you! Next week we will be checking batteries and charging systems.......lol:beer:

Letter from MNZ you say???? Nope. All I ever get back from MNZ is my license and their AGM report. The rest of the time I just send them money.

If you didn't do any of the nats rounds so far then they probably didn't send anything. I wouldn't be too concerned.
A quick shifter is an ignition/fuel cut device. Basically it means when you change gears you can hold the throttle pinned (ie/ without backing off) and just hit the gear lever and it will change gears.
There a couple different types, the mechanically operated ones are usually found inline somewhere on the gear change linkage, when pressure is applied to the lever a signal is sent tot he ecu and fuel and ignition is cut for a predetermind time (like .2 of a second) this allows the gear to slide in easily without having to back off the throttle.
The other type is like i explained above, you manually push a button to cut the fuel/ignition.
As swerve said, they allow a slight advantage when going through the gears which over the course of the race adds up.

There is two bikes that standout from down south in my mind. Straight away you can tell the shifts sound way different to other bikes. But what would be the fun in saying who? When ya listen to quickshifters on every bike in the US for 3 years it an't hard to tell.

Quite funny how a HORN button can be used for a quick shifter tool on some bikes if you know how and where to wire in the correct diode:whistle:
You must have heard the bikes I heard as well then:mad:

Dom, maybe get a group of dads together (maybe just two )who's boys dont ride in that class and get a technical inspection done ..........

yeah i think i counted 3 bikes all the same make, if something is mentioned as briefing that they are not to be used in any way shape or form you shouldnt need to protest. Not my class though and even if it was i wouldnt bother...

possibly the bikes might have to be actually ridden...modern KIT RACE ECU's have quickshifter functions built into them...ECU's know what gear they are in...
So nothin noticable externally.

Yeah i think the problem was with bikes with manually operated systems by switch, they were on some yamahas cause the yec or whatever it is has it built in to be able to be used. I asked sam smith about it cause his was not one of the bikes and he said having to flick the switch seems just as hard as changing gears well so he couldnt see an advantage anyway.
They did sound cool though! Sorta just makes a bit of a pop through the gear changes
btw this is only my fairly uneducated points of veiw ;)

Still need a seperate switch of some sort though. Most ECU's or add ons have the capability to run a quick shifter - easy to check either way.
I did notice in Timaru that one young fella was clutching full throttle gear changes motorcross style, and another changing on the limiter, both could sound like a shifter because of the limiter.
Gareth Jones' R6 "cracks" slightly when shutting of the throttle - I can assure you this bike has no quick shifter.
His and Sams bikes are tuned properly and with a kit ECU the extra rpm make the bike sound totally different, not because of a quickshifter.

I still retain the switch block on my one, only cos I am too lazy to connect a button for the pit lane limiter, and I figure if I change it now it probably looks like I was using a quick shifter lol!

Of course they sound different.
One sounds yellow.
Graves pipes scream like a piggy.
It has a lot of extra fuel added.
ECU revs slightly more.
The left clipon on/off switch is for the radiator fan.

Dont understand why your bothering too explain yourself mate,If they are so sure your bikes not up to spec they should put their money where their mouths are and lodge an official protest or just shut the f#%k up

man, that must mean that you a) build both bikes or b) dyno both bikes
What a lucky guy. Do you really need a button for a quickshifter to work? The engine has one built into it.

Y'all wanna know about the micky new tech in quickshifters and shifter switches?
Have a looky loo here:

Available in NZ.
Putting on a stirring the shit hat, if you hide the wires well enough, you might get away with this one.
Or you could ride in a class that allows such things.
