Tonight I attended the first Basic Preventative Maintenance Course at TSS in Lower Hutt that they have run in a while. It was great ...

Covered the things you should know .. and things you HAVE to know ... including -

* Chains - all sorts of stuff including slack and oiling and maintaining etc
* Lights
* Batteries and the differences
* Tyres and all you need to know including what the markers are on them for and how to know shit like when they need to be changed and how to not stuff them when riding
* Checks - you need to do before riding
* Oil and changing and Filters and Changing (for a scorpio not a big bike)
* question time - ask anything you want ...

and there was other stuff ... this is a basic preventative course .. not an indepth one ... cost was $30 and included pizza and drinks ...

Was well worth the time and the effort by TSS's Stew and Ben ...

If you want to book give Ben in the workshop a call ... and when they get enough people they run the course!

That sounds like a fantastic idea.

I have troops (and superiors) who keep their bikes (or not) in quite a disgusting state.
I forget that not everybody is a technician... and what looks like common sense to me isn't so plainly obvious to others.

All who aren't so comfortable at swing spanners (and maybe some that are) should attend something like this.
A bike can NOT be neglected the same way a cage can be.

When it comes to maintenance they are closer to aircraft.

What amazes me is I am already putting the information to good use ... I like being about to do things for myself ... and will ask for help if I don't know ... but its kinda cool to have the option of doing ya own!

Great idea,I ran something similar about 18 months ago,had the Kendogs & about four others at home in my garage & just showed the basics & what to look for,It can be a great help to know & understand how your bike works,could even save you some money

Awesome it was too Bistard!! Sully60 gave me a hand to do the 24,000km service on my Hornet a few weeks back as I'd forgotten a lot of what you'd shown us as I hadn't had a chance to put it into practice, but a worth while thing to know how to do basic maintenance on your bike! :)

Good stuff to know, I think I'll do some sort of course soonish...

I only just has WasPhantom talk me over my bike, including the real basics like how my brakes work :o When he got to showing my how to check tyre pressure he discovered that they were very very low... I had been commenting that handling had felt off for a week or so... :doh: At least I know what that feels like and what to do about it now!!

It would be nice to have one in auckland, but i am not currently aware of one.

It does make sense to treat a bike in a manner similar to aircraft ...

to borrow some terminology from the states, i'd like to learn how to do the equivalents of A and B checks, and some of a C check :P

( A is every 'flight' and is often just called a preflight, B is a more detailed version, that is done less often, basically start of day type stuff {assuming my memory is accurate}, and C checks need the mechanics in aviation, to do more detailed checks)

Check with your local bikes shops if you are not in wellington ... tell them what is happening here and they may be able to set something up in other towns!
