I hate cam belts with a mighty loathing. What's wrong with side valves? They get the job done? No belts, no chains, and zero risk of a valve hitting a piston.

Cam belts have been a gift to the motor trade for the last 20 years. As cars have become more reliable and service intervals have extended,we have had less and less ''things'' to do....without cam belts and brakes we would all be out of a job.

Just be careful about ''cheap'' cam belt jobs - whatever you do for a living, you must be aware that to do your job for a considerably less cost to the consumer, you will have to ''trim'' items on the invoice. You can charge less for your time,or less for your product....but what ever you do,it will have to be cheaper than your competitor.

How do you sell yourself cheaper?

Reduce your overheads. - Own your own premises, don't rent or lease.
Make fewer mistakes. - Be a qualified tradesman (NZ qual, not Somalian)
Work smarter not harder. - Don't work out of a van, work out of a well equipped workshop.
Less down time. - Don't travel to jobs, make them come to you.
More efficient business processes. - get a girl for your office.

Probably a few others I haven't mentioned. - I have a few answers I haven't mentioned.

...........

Are you skidmark's father per chance?

Last time I listened to your advice on this vehicle and took it to the dealership they fucked it up.

Now you are trying to tell me I shouldn't be dealing with a guy who happens to be a BMW trained A grade mechanic (and was apprentice of the year a few years ago) and instead should throw a third of the value of the vehicle at a "real" mechanic instead.

Reduce your overheads. - Own your own premises, don't rent or lease. - You still need to make a return on your investment in your premises. I guess rates are cheap as chips on commercial premises around Auckland too.
Make fewer mistakes. - Be a qualified tradesman (NZ qual, not Somalian) - A Grade, BMW trained kiwi - ex apprentice of the year (how's yours?)
Work smarter not harder. - Don't work out of a van, work out of a well equipped workshop. - to change a cam belt? What the hell for?
Less down time. - Don't travel to jobs, make them come to you. - don't charge so much so that your book is full. Choose your area or charge additional for out of area.
More efficient business processes. - get a girl for your office. - or use an answerphone and not even have an office or staff overhead.

Probably a few others I haven't mentioned. - I have a few answers I haven't mentioned. - Thank Christ, they would probably be as ill-conceived as the last lot anyway............

Call Gav on 0274 741 688.

Awesome. Some big advantages to getting the Mechanic out too you.

For those of you that don't know Gav is a highly trained and motivated indentured Motor Mechanic having served his time with BMW, during his training he received "apprentice of the year".

Gav has worked tirelessly over the years giving his time to motorcycle racers prepping bikes for competition, performing modifications and staying track side.
'Two smoker' would be the first to admit that without Gav's help his racing seasons may not have been possible.

There you have it. A genuine good bugger [and KBer] with solid mechanical skills, who will come to you and fix/service your motor vehicle. Gav is well priced [as The stranger will attest] and honest, give him a call folk's:sunny:.
