View Full Version : How many km have you done in the past year?
Radar
7th February 2009, 15:06
How far have you gone on a bike during the last 12 months?
If you have not had a bike for 12 months yet, estimate how far you will go in a year.
You may want to explain how you clocked up over 20,000 km, or only did a gutless "under 500 km's".
[edit:]
If you have gone more than 20,000 km, post your distance on my other poll, here:
http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=92152
--------------------
I did just over 10,000 on my GT250, taking it to Napier a few times, up to Rotorua, and numerous times to Wellington.
Have already done just over 10,000 kms on the VStrom: 3500 kms on a S Island tour and 2,000 kms up to Dargaville, also around the central plateau mountains, and the rest within a day of home.

I'm estimating on 35,000 - 40,000 this year with 200km's a day.
On the down side, I ain't going to be counting on much of a re-sale value in a couple of years.
On the bright side the bike shop will be my friends. :sunny:
Sad when you have to buy your friends.

It must be hard going from lots to zero :(
Is the zero directly related to the 35,000?

I can conservatively estimate 30,000+km.
Work bike normally travels 15,000km+ per year, no issues, just commuting and travelling to clients to sort out issues.
Had the new toy for just over 4 months, and I've done 16,000km (ok, 15,992km - just ready for its third service as of this evening). The only thing ugly about that mileage is the cost of tyres and servicing... and the big hit of depreciation when I eventually sell it :crybaby:
oh... and for 3 months in early to mid 08, I didn't have my license either, so it was limited travelling, as per my work license.
edit: If I keep up the pace on the toy, it would cover 48,000km in year, then tack on the 15,000km for the work bike, and a conservative estimate would be 63,000km. I swear the bike shops see dollar signs every time I walk in the door (and I rarely walk out without having bought something, or ordered it).

About 8,000 a year commuting (if I go direct), about another 5,000 at lunch time just to escape. The rest is a combination of shopping etc. and just riding for the hell of it. All up about 30,000 annually.
I don't own a car at the moment so apart from a few in borrowed cages all my ks are on the bike.

In less than 6 months I have ridden more than 14,000kms on the scooter, I am riding much more than I thought I would (and loving it) and am using the car less than I expected. Now I am going to sell the car because in almost 6 months I have only driven 300kms on it.
My kms have come from:
Commuting
Group rides
Solo rides
travelling to & from bike rallies
When I rode to the Magpie Madness rally in Winchester (South of Christchurch, not far from Timaru) I clocked up 2,400kms in 5 days.

if the ACC proposle goes ahead... well that will filter down, and will put on hold for a period of the year... So less k's, less wear and tear, save on fuel, tyres, oil, and replacement parts etc inturn less gst for the goobermenit

I've travelled a touch under 14,000km since I voted in the poll... and the bike would have been out of action for 2-3 months of the time...
Still over 20,000km... the poll needs more options, I've done 45,000km in 13 months, ish.
Jantar... if you want stats, the Grand Challenge participants that finished completed more than 73,000 miles without incidents...

I think i already know the stats, but others may not. Phil Read didn't cover distances travelled very well in his report, so I intend using this thread and poll as a reference if we can get enough riders voting in it. Ideally we need more than 400 votes so as to have a larger segment (and more up to date) than the one ACC have used.

I commute to Wellington city every day which has got to be the best part of working in town - I ride in the wind, rain and sun. The bike is a bitch to keep clean....

Not far from it....is what I do on holiday. This last one in March included a good Canty day ride, Wed night social ride, Prorider track day....brilliant fun and learnt a bit....the TT2000 with most of the flyers and the Rusty Nuts 10 000km super tour with the commutes between. Just over 15000km in the 3 weeks....
Now I need to wait until September for my next holidays and by gum the bike shop better have the heated grips fitted by then or the will be hell to pay.

Will you be celebrating your long distance training in October with a Rusty Nuts GC? It will be a breeze for you with th night ride practice, but I would add a few Piecock and Akatarawa diversions in just to make sure ;-)

The Grand Challenge is the annual ride where you are pretty much guaranteed to whack 2500km's on your steed in a weekend. At least 1600 (1000 miles) would be done in 24hours. The route is delivered the night before the ride and always contains some "Interesting" roads!

I searched and couldn't find a thread on this topic, so out of general interest I thought I'd kick it off!
How many Kilometers do you spend in the saddle over the year?
I ask this because on my daily commute I don't see as many bikes as I'd like to see, but I get the feeling that the cages that pull over to offer me a gap whilst I lane split are often bikers on their way to work!
Personally I'm doing 20,000 + Km per year as the bike is my primary mode of transport, however most bikers that I know keep the bike for fair weather / summer riding only.
So are you a fair weather weekend warrior or a rain or shiner?
Do you have a reason for not biking more often?

Dont worry too much about it dude, the search function on KB is an unwieldy beast and if it does bring up anything of use it is either not very relevant to your keywords or is many years old, case in point the above thread was started 3 years ago.

I ride on average 400kms per day in my truck.
Ride 30kms per day in my ute.
Ride my bike about 100kms on the odd weekend now an then,so I ticked 1-2000km.
I tinker an polish the bike more than I ride it,,the pleasure is very much in simply owning it.
Going back 12 years I rode my old 1340 shovel 70,000kms over three years while living in Oz,,,an some people think they were unreliable.
But I did very little on any other form of wheels at that time because I didn't have any.
