View Full Version : A cool bike rider

My bike is not fancy or sexy compared to the modern sports bike (Well DUH!). Many times I was embarassed when other motorcyclists asked me what I ride. I reply "A YB125 1987" and they would go "Aah riiiight...." :zzzz:. I'm not a mind reader but I think I can tell they are thinking "I don't know that bike...".

Well today I took my little 125 to church. Many people there ofcourse, and crowded sometimes. A usual place where many people would turn their heads if there's something interesting i.e. a fancy motorcycle. Well what kind of a wanker would ride straight down the driveway on a crappy 125 and show off? So I took the footpath and parked it at the back where no one can see. If I had a very nice sportsbike, I'd storm the driveway. Not a problem.

After the service I sneaked to the back to get to my bike, avoiding teenagers and adults who would love to say "I knew you were a biker but wow you are riding a junk?"

But then a little kid came over and spotted me.

His jaws dropped :gob:and exclaimed "Whoah! A MOTORBIKE! THATS A MOTORBIKE! KOOOOOL!!" So I smiled back saying "Thanks!".

That moment I realised, for them kids, who needs a fancy "Ninja" or a "Honda" to show off? Kids don't care if you ride a K1200S or a 1098. All they know is either you ride or don't ride. In another words, you are either cool or not cool.

I felt cool for the first time in Christchurch. Funny how a little kid made me feel proud.

So a YB125 is the motorcycle equivilent of a van with 'free candy' written on the side?

True isn't it, most kids don't give a shit about the type of bike. I used to have kids comment about my bike all the time, a bit of that may have been that I was a chick riding, probably even more so that I was their friend's nanny, but they liked my bike...... and it was a GN250.;)

Well that turned out really nice EJK.
Kids dont care what kind of machine you ride, its the fact that its a bike, with freedom attached to it and its cool!
I bet you were chuffed! Hold your head high mate!

I know it's quite nice :D

When I walked into the church (Here Shirly), an old lady noticed my gears and came upto me and said "You ride a motorbike? I've got 5 (number between 3-5 but I'm sure it was 5) sons and they all ride a bike. And one of em has a Ducati!"

:sunny: Anyone here?

Nice story, EJ! Even though I already know my Volty is cool, it's nice to be reminded sometimes.

Hooray for the little kid! I hope you go back to that church and see him again, and maybe one day he'll get a bike of his own and it will all be due to you!

That's true, that, for work I ride a CT110 with a rubbish bin on the back and kids stare at me ALL the time. The fact that I ride on the footpath might be part of the reason, though, haha.

Even a little 125 needs the opportunity to redeem its soul and achieve spiritual enlightenment.

EJK, You have a bike:Punk: Thats all thats matter.
Everyone that has a bike wishes they had a better bike or another bike. I wish I had a new bike I never had one and I dont think I ever will.
Look at it this way............. If you had the bike of your dreams then you have no more dreams. Whats the point in that.
Be happy with what you have. Remember there and many guys and girls that wish they had a bike full stop.
BE PROUD of what you have.:Punk:

So I just pulled up for some BK after a blat up north and this 2-3 year old comes quickly waddling at me. The dad says with a smile "He likes your motorbike" :)
Then another young guy in line starts asking me about my bike as he's just starting out and then me and his dad start sharing bike knowledge.
Then the guy serving me a burger and fries tells me of his intention of selling his car and getting a bike, probably a Ninja 250. So I have a chat with him for a while as well.

Biking seems to be a pretty "In" thing at the moment. :D
