View Full Version : What knickers to wear?

Hi All
Okay this may sound really stupid, but what sort of knickers do you girls wear when riding? :o
I thought it was only me, but after being lucky enough to have a yak to another chicky rider a few weeks ago - it seems it's not so I thought I'd ask the masses.
After track days I tend to find that my 'womanly' are is red, sore and almost rashy from the combination of sweat, leathers and rubbing. And for all you blokes reading this post.....trust me there is nothing sexual about the way this feels AT ALL!!!
Any advice?

I used to swear by g-strings, but then wore boy-leg knickers on the bike one day and much prefer those, plus, if you fall off and end up having to have your leathers removed or cut off you in an ambulance with everyone trying to get a look and take pics, it's best to be wearing a bit more than a piece of floss on your arse.

Try using some talc powder when you get dressed.. not on ya actual "bits" but around the top where ya leg joins, in the creases.. & wear cotton undies :niceone:

God a piece of floss would get lost in my arse hahahaha
What fabric do you wear?

Cotton, always cotton. It breathes and you won't end up with thrush from sitting sweating in your undies all day! (You boys enjoying this?:bleh:)

I wear fitted cotton boxers, comes lower down the leg so doesn't bunch up,either that or I wear none and just wear cotton legging's under my bike pants. The one thing I have learnt to avoid is anything small and lacey, did that ONCE, very uncomfortable after couple of hundred warm k's. :(

Cotton is the biz! Or silk (pure silk, not just a silky-feel artificial fibre). Or, believe it or not, BAMBOO! Yep, bamboo knickers are absolutely brilliantly soft and comfy, keep the sweat away from your body and stay fresh all day! Bamboo socks are great too.

As for the style, I find plain briefs the most comfy. The plainer the cut the better - avoids seams or lacy inserts irritating your skin.

Bamboo is a lovely fibre - I use it in my son's nappies, and it is so soft, absorbant and hard wearing. I think it has natural anti-bacterial properties too, which stop it from smelling.

Yep, it's a fantastic fibre - once you've tried it you won't go back! Now my partner and I both have bamboo towels, socks and undies. My sister also uses the bamboo nappy liners for her baby.
When I first got the bamboo towels I doubted the claims. The thought of bamboo against my skin just didn't seem right! But WOW they are GORGEOUS.
As I can afford it I'm going to change all my bed linen to bamboo. Egyptian cotton is so yesterday.

Bicycle shorts instead of cotton undies would solve your problem.
<img src="http://i44.tinypic.com/2vcggm8.jpg"/>
Cotton is the enemy when it comes to physical activity. Eschew it, particularly on parts of your body that sweat and chafe.
Get a pair of cycling shorts and the difference in your riding experience will be like night and day, I promise you.
Cyco (http://www.cyco.co.nz/) on Ponsonby Rd will have what you need.

I wouldn't wear my bib shorts under a one-piece, but I do have a lightweight pair of tri shorts that I use under leathers now and then. They're also good to put under cargo shorts for tramping, etc.

Well obviously I never sweat... either that or I never move!
As my dear old Grandma used to say:
Horses sweat
Men perspire
But ladies only glow :sweatdrop
Seriously though, I have never suffered chafing from cotton or silk while riding. I often wear wear silk long-johns under my riding gear and find them perfectly comfy.

That's what I believe.
'Cotton is death' is a popular saying for mountain-wear.
Holds sweat and does not dry.
Sweat rash is often caused by Candida fungus.
Use of Vaseline after bathing and before riding or exercise is a good idea.
Cyclists have found the answers to this problem already.

Dude - remove the embedded image in your quote before you get in trouble with the mods :) (Speaking from experience)
I used to wear bike shorts under my leathers, and they are quite comfy. As long as you've got a breathable fabric, they are excellent for non-chafing capabilities.

Mm. Presumably you're not riding a sportbike at race pace on the track wearing a one-piece over them, etc.
If you never find yourself peeling out of your leathers while having to blink hard to see through the sweat you're dripping onto the floor, this thread probably doesn't apply to you.

This is true. I rarely find myself dripping sweat when I climb off my Volty after a hard day of riding for pleasure. I do, however, still recommend cotton, silk and bamboo as the most pleasant fibres I have worn under my riding gear for general-purpose riding.

No, really, I know 'noothink' bout womens nether regions.....but use myself a brand called 'Under Armor'....they make purpose designed hi-tech 'knickers' for those of us who play hard and need some help!
They are available in mens and ladies, but most importantly, are designed for EITHER hot weather or cold(ie seperate items for each season)
They work for blokes...all I wore for 60 very hot days ridin round north Australia in 35'+ heat for 100's km each day. Good for blokes, all I can say!!( yes, I am aware there are some small anatomical differances, even though I am no expert!)

I wear lycra shorts under my bike gear for three reasons.
1. If I have an accident i am decently covered whike they cut off my pants (and it DID happen - phew!)
2. If it is hot in my gear, I can take off my bike pants and not look out of place (not a great look for me, but if i am THAT hot I don't care :) )
3. Comfort - nothing beats it.

Cotton is good.
Keep yourself lubed while riding, let juices flow but not into your boots, squishy socks arent cool.
For me it depends on the riding temperature. If its hot, sweat absorbtion material, if its cold long johns etc.

Interesting read seeing as I had similar problems at Pukekohe on the weekend sitting around in the heat in full leathers waiting for races. As I'm quite inclined to bouts of exercise I have a set of full length compressions for both my top and bottom half in the form of Sports Skins - http://www.skins.net/nz/en/Products/BioAcceleration_Technology/sport - and for the more female demographic - http://www.skins.net/nz/en/Products/BioAcceleration_Technology/she
I highly recommend these if you're willing to fork out the dosh. For comfort they're second to none as they regulate body temperature, greatly reduce muscle fatigue and don't retain sweat as they dry off extremely quickly not to mention that chafing is non-existant. I'm not quite sure where the sweat goes but it certainly doesn't go on my leathers as even after being tortured in the heat my gear slips right off without any trouble at all whereas when I went without the sweat on my skin would grab and just be a great nuisance.

I used to go for the g-strings too but after riding the Daytona a bit you feel like you're getting cut in half and the guys behind me would get a bit frisky seeing the pink sticking out the top of my pants...I just don't swing like that :D
On a serious note (seriously I don't wear, thongs, no honest), interesting topic. Was pointed here after a few of us (boys and girls) were having a knatter about this very topic.

Totally agree with the bamboo. I was a sceptic and now I'm converted. This is what I mostly ride with (and wear everyday) and it's scary stuff (almost as scary as merino) how fresh it makes you feel. The wife is thinking about trying it too

Totally agree with this too. When I'm riding how I use shorts that come to my knees. Perfect of track days and I don't get as sore if I don't wear them. In saying that, they are pricey and you can get cheaper types. If you're not working as hard then bike shorts are good (and extra padding is always a bonus).

Had always been wearing a thong, but it definitely wasn't optimum in comfort...especially the lacy ones ;)
Anyway, on long rides I swear by my cotton bike pants with a panty liner for all day freshness.
The lack of seams around the groin area also helps with the "no more numbness" from cutting the blood circulation, which can be compounded from the fact I normally ride my Vtwin Orgasmatron :D
I found the same was applicable to me during a GoAsHardAsICan track day...
Maybe try a couple of the solutions sited on here, and see for yourself.

But on a serious, and semi-related note, I'm gutted that I have a biker leather jacket and biker armoured pants, both with zips in the back to zip them together, but because they're different brands they won't zip up. LOL!Loving it!!!! But must admit I stopped reading at the first mention of "sweaty crease!" Checked out the bottom of the page too to see how many like minded males zoned in on the thread title! I see I am not alone! Thanks for the laugh! Oh for what it is worth, what happened to hessian, the material of choice for the eco friendly?
Err, hessian? Is that "sack-cloth"? Sounds like very uncomfortable wearing!

Yeah, I'm picturing some very red-raw sensitive skin there. :pinch: Perhaps he was thinking of hemp?

I guess I better go out and buy some lacy underwear, g-strings and such and conduct my own riding experiments! :O :pinch:
Hmmm this problem has never cropped up with me! The things you learn in KB!

Dude - remove the embedded image in your quote before you get in trouble with the mods :) (Speaking from experience)
.
Too late, I got infracted. I also got another one last week. At least now I know what the fuck they're on about. The last message I got was about "ignoring forum netiquette" whatever the fuck that is. I thought it was cos I was abusing someone or something. Sounds like bullshit, smells like bullshit, tastes like bullshit: yep. its bullshit. I have copied this in a PM to the mod concerned as well. Just saying to someone "you're bad" without saying why, or why not, blows. Now, back to the underwear talk.

Doesn't a big box of pantie liners get supplied with every Honda that's sold?
BAMM!
But they come in handy. (Not a pun, dammit). Great for wiping up oil spills (so absorbent!), chain cleaning, bandaging cuts...
Thanks Honda :)

Egyptian cotton is so yesterday.
hell....why stop there....lets bamboo everything!!!;)

Well done on reaching the magic 240!
Thanks for the tip. I called Motomail and spoke to a dis-interested female who basically said "nope we wouldn't have that" without checking.
I could still go there, and if the bit fits on either side I could just sew it onto the other side. Failing that I'll try the suggestion above.
Now, what other posts can I reply to... ;)
Speak to Peter....he's awesome. He's the one who sorted me out and is totally awesome. I've been told the chick who works there would 'prefer to be somewhere else'

if you fall off and end up having to have your leathers removed or cut off you in an ambulance with everyone trying to get a look and take pics
Are you trying to tell us that Ambos cut your gear off so they can take pics of your privates and catch a perve? Cos me thinks if your in a position where an Ambo feels he/she needs to cut your gear off then you've got more to worry about than what knickers you wore that day...
Wannabiker
9th February 2009, 21:59
..they have a padded crotch which helps remove the perspiration. This was originally a padded natural chamois, which had to be washed in water only, or "lux" soap (no detergent) and dried away from the sunlight (or it goes hard like sandpaper) Modern pants have synthetic fabric which is far easier to care for, works better and is softer to the skin. The padding is usually pretty thin.
The more expensive shorts are constructed from 6 or 8 panels of lycra, and are designed/cut to natrually be in the sitting position, so the fabric is not under tension whe you are sitting down, and are cut to be higher at the back...so your kidneys do not get chilled, or you do not get a sunburn stripe across your back.

No no no, the ambos were lovely, however you know how people are, come over to have a look, "oh look, she's sitting up, lets take some pics". They didn't get a chance to cut my pants off me as luckily my hubby was being watchdog and wouldn't let them!! And believe me, I felt ok enough to give everyone a bit of cheek, but they still wanted to cut my pants off me!

Who knew undies was such a popular topic!
my usual: cotton granny pants. never had any unwanted results, even after 12 hours in the saddle.
Seconded!
Or, believe it or not, BAMBOO!
Also seconded! Just make sure it doesn't come with sneaky seam-plastic that leads to owie :(
Undies? WTF??? Commando all the way baby :2thumbsup

I was told to wear them so the leather pants will move and not rub all the way down to the thigh area and bonus a padded but pad to to soak up some of the vibrations.
sounds gay to me at first but did my last track day in them and now will always wear them with leathers

Give me 5 seconds behind a walking girl in pants or a dress...using a combination of Visible Panty Line and the sway / bounce movement of the buttocks I will render my verdict. Cycle shorts may be misinterpreted if I cant see the bottom edge of the leg.
BTW, I must confess I do get caught out between G-strings and Commando if I can't actually make out the string above the waistband.
