View Full Version : Cliffhanger Hillclimb 2009

Deano
9th February 2009, 08:03
The King of the Cliffhanger title is up for grabs again.

March 14 and 15 - Gladstone, Wairarapa.

The current King, Jay Lawrence unfortunately looks to be out of action this year.

Who will step up and stake their claim to the throne ?

The flier is attached, containing relevant details.

Don't delay in entering as last years was a full house, and places will be limited.

You can also visit www.cliffhanger.org.nz for more info, previous years results, and a video of a run up the hill.

Also, if anyone is keen to enter and unsure which class, please ask me.

Basically the two cliffhanger classes are for the serious competitors who want to go for the prizemoney and the glory.

Support classes are also on offer.

To be honest I haven't been up there for a while.......no honestly - I haven't been practicing ....:devil2:

Flame was going to check the road condition out so hopefully someone can update.

I would expect the gravel has all gone, leaving a few ruts on three corners...should be much better than the gravel there last year but will confirm.

Hi Kevin,

if you are entering on your Hornet, then you are eligible for Formula 1 Support Class or Cliffhanger Class 600cc to Open.

I know your bike is a stock streetbike, but streetstock is for slightly smaller capacity... lol

WooT!! Im gonna do this year on my RG. I am hoping to get up there faster on my RG than I did on a bike 5times it size last year.

I can highly recommend this "race" to anyone and everyone. The road is awesome and very scary all wrapped into one big adrenaline fest. DOO IT!!!

Yep Deano, rode up there on Saturday, the 2nd left hander and the right hander following it are still rutted as last year. But then they have resealed with very coarse chip from about a third of the way up the course.....it remains un-swept arrrrrggggh!!!
So hopefully they sweep it properly and the heatwave in the meantime doesn't mean it all gets ripped up.

I think im getting a bit soft but i dont wanna go all the way down there to make up the numbers and i dont wanna be pushing a superbike up there in those sorta conditions...

Its a great event though and honestly the most fun ive had racing to date!

This would be the best challenge for Carver, real roads for him to own everyone on!!

If it gets swept and the new chip stays down, then I think it will be fantastic (well.....apart from those two pesky corners being rutted up). I'll ride up there again in a couple of weeks and see how its looking:devil2:

Best thing that can happen in the heat we have been having is to get a few cars (NOT TRUCKS) driving over it to bed the chip in a bit before it is swept.

Hmmm, wounder how the FXR would go?

No need to remove anything from the bike unless you want to lose some ballast and improve streamlining a little. And make it a little less expensive if the unthinkable happens.

Definintely a BEARS Class as you will have seen on the entry form. You doing both days ?

Had a slow ride up the hill on Sunday to have a close look .

Overall I think the road is in better condition than last year. There's still a bit of loose chip from recent re-sealling but a month of cars going over it could be all it needs to clear that up.

Most of the loose chip seemed to be in the oncoming lane but again , was better than last year. Riders may need to watch the left , left right combo after the fastest section. Otherwise the sections that had loose chip last year are good now.

It's the cheapo repairs that cause the loose chip Deano - they just chip-seal in to fill the (longitudinal) wheel ruts. `Bit' sealing never works. Get the council just sweep the existing repairs. Its cheap and the roading maintenance contractor should be doing it anyway.
Pity its now a main truck route aye? Used to be mint.

No noise supplementaries as such, but I think they reserve the right to ban you if the bike is extremely obnoxious.

No bucket class this year sorry. Depending on how many turn up it could be a go next year though.

Was a good weekend to be sure, the cliffhanger rally is looking to become a good little shin dig !
The hill was certainly fun lol took a while to get the swing of it !

Was in better shape to be beind the camera rather than the controlls of a bike today ! but that was all good as i did manage to get chatted up by a couple of young ladies hiding under the bridge !

and a few pics here (http://picasaweb.google.com/sinfullbastard/Cliffhanger1415March09#slideshow) !

It was indeed a good weekend, nice pics mate - I think the video of my start must have been in slow motion :)

Glad to here you all had a good time, it did turn out to be a fanTAZtic event. I can now appreciate how much effort that goes into these events now that I've become more involved.

A huge thank you to Dina, Garry and Marc for all the ground work to make this happen. Deano for getting all the sponsors on board to help pay for the event, Dave for all the timming gear, Pete for all the running around getting alot of the extras as well as getting everyone off the line on time and to all the marshals who along with all the other organisers that give up there weekend to make this event happen.

I would also like to give a big thanks to Steve of Kitty O'Shea's for putting together the computer program that made my life (and a few others) a lot easier to get the results out. They used to be done by pen and paper!!

Now to finish off I want to try and do something further for those of you that entered the event. I would like to offer emailing you out all your run times. I will be getting the computer back next week, So if you would like these results please send me a PM with your email address and I'll work on getting them out to you as soon as possible.

Well I enjoyed the short time I was there....maybe next year I'll have more time and camp over like last year.

Big thanks from me to everyone involved in this unique and amazing event. Thanks also to those people who put in the time and effort to take and post their videos and photos - I am sure you have managed to capture the very essence of the event for those who could not attend. Top effort from Her_B4 who got awesome shots of individual riders up the hill. Next year apparently is the 10th Anniversary Meeting so should be extra special. For those of you who havn't done this event yet please don't be afraid to give it a go - young or old, fast or slow you can just do your own thing and enjoy being able to ride your bike faster than you normally should/would in relative safety up an amazing piece of road. See you there next year!

Gotta say that was the most fun I 've had on this bike so far. What a great day, thanks heaps to the organisers... and the ambulance guy who took care of my brother after his off in the last run.
heres the one run I captured on video.(sorry about the crappy sound quality, a few technical issues).

Not exactly the quickest run, it certainly takes a bit of getting used to this 'using both sides of the road on blind corners' thing:eek:.

I'm so jealous, I was gutted not to be able to enter this year!

My tard needs a bottom end rebuild and one of the gears is on backorder

How many motards entered this year and what was the quickest time?

I know Tony Sklenars did a 2.36 at one point on Sunday and he was well stoked!

About 4 or 5 motards this year...

Yep, Tony was properly quick! There were 4 of us up there - I was 3rd (No. 33) with a 2:54, so he was really moving.
It was me that came off on the second left hander - not entirely sure what happened as I was knocked out, but seem to remember drifting a bit wide... Don't remember anything after that. Apparently I was walking around and talking gibberish, so thanks to whoever it was who came up after me and got me under control! (I'm afraid I don't remember that either - only coming to in the ambulence!). On that note, like my bro said, thanks to the ambulance guy who sorted me out....

yeah 2:36 is seriously quick for a motard (there were 4). There was a bit of a difference between first and 2nd, I got 2:52, which I'm pretty happy with for my first time and no practice on Sunday. (You forgot to mention that you were beaten by your little brother bro :bleh:) so I've got a bit of work to do next year :) and there's still plenty left in this bike, at the end of every run i was kicking myself for backing off for 'flat out' corners, grrr.
