Just wondering if anyone here (preferably North Shore based) is into Kayak fishing?
Went out with 'she who must be obeyed' yesterday to buy a little sit on top kayak to play with down the beach with the boy.
Turned up at Canoe and Kayak and they had a fully fitted out fishing Kayak - and my wife said "NO!" - before I even said anything.
I put on a sulky face and continue to look at all the cool fishing bits and bobs - totally ignoring the bits she was looking at.
Wife has a weak moment and buys me the Kayak - plus all the add-ons, and a roof rack for the cage.
So - we pick up the toy this afternoon - and I have no idea on how to fish from a Kayak.
So anyone who is into this willing to come out and show me what the fuck to do?

Hahaha - good for you! Sounds like something my other half would want to buy :D No advice in its use sorry, other than say: if you hook a bigun, let go of the line so you don't get towed out to sea  Have fun :niceone:

And watch out for sharks because from underneath the kayak can resemble dinner.
Use soft baits to save mucking around baiting up your hook.

you will want to invest in a good soft bait set up, 6"8 rod to abuot 7"2 usually a good one, a good reel and make sure yuo get a reel cover for when you are moving to keep salt water off it , usually pays to take to rods out with you while on a kayak because you may want to target diff types ect and may need something lighter or heavier ect..
Hunting and fishing do a good set up for around $250 shimano raider extreme rod and I think its a slade F400b Reel up grade reel another $50 and worth it.Look for a alloy bodied reel to one that owont flex if you hok up a kingi. soft baiting usually the best for a kyak , buy a sea anchor and drift fish pick your spots ect. make sure some one gives you a rund down on how to softbait properly as its nothing like normal fishing, every thing is diff ( from knots to tackle to braid line and leader )
main thing on a kyak get a good burley flow and choose your spots well at the right time. just of taka puna mussle bed is a good start

It doesnt hurt to get a good seat with back support either. It really is worth it if you plan on spending alot of time fishing from a kayak.

Im ya man bro, slayed 30 snapper in 4 days up the coro last month, I got me rig soughted and use a combo of a longline and rod, use real baits at the mo (seen the prices of soft baits !!)
if you got the boat I am happy to take you out and show ya, really there is nothing to it.
Re Sharks I was floating around the apparent Shark invested waters off Matarangi and didnt see anything, and if I did who cares, its highly unlikey you will get attacked.
I tend to stay about 400 mtrs max from shore (thats where the fish are)
Record day, two 16 pound snapper in one day and one was caught amongst a group of very expensive sport fishing boats.............the faces of the boys on all the boats went from laughter to "WTF are ya doin"" The faces on those same blokes when I pulled up a 16 pounder and paddled off cool and calmly (like it happened every day) was fucking priceless.
Get into it mate its a awesome sport !!

Lots of good advice re fishing but not a lot kayaking wise. I've done a bit of Kayak fishing up Coromandel way and it was pretty cool. Done a reasonable amount of time in a Kayak too. Not sure how experienced you are in a kayak but my only advice would be to spend a bit of time in your kayak first without worrying about fishing. Get your balance and understand what you can and can't do in her. Get comfortable. I guarantee once you finally do cast a line and hook up you'll enjoy the experience a lot more. If you get a good Kingi on he'll tow you and if you arent comfortable in your kayak it will be a scary experience.
All the best

I tend to paddle around find the fish on the rod, put out the special Kayak longline, then rod it some more, then pull in longline and head home, dont tend to stay out for longer than say 3 hours.

Get a proper paddle jacket too so you can keep spare rigs, wrapped in plastic, in the front pocket. Be VERY careful where you keep a knife/gaff in a kayak! I have a steel trace, fixed to the back of the aft compartment, running past me toward the bow, with a tent peg on the end. This is jammed into a small cleat thing and when you catch a fish, you just grab it and whack it up thru the gills, out the mouth, dehook, and then slide the fish back into the aft compartment. Stops the 'lil fuckers jumping out! Good luck!

Is anyone here familiar with more distance oriented kayaking? I enjoy just kayaking around and out to islands and stuff but I'm not that into fishing. So I figured it would be a fun thing to do and a good way to get fit but I'm not really sure what kind of kayak you would need and if they have specific rules or what? There aren't any regulations to where and when you can paddle? Just go out there and go with I'm assuming a lifejacket, phone and some food and water? Anyone know what a good kayak is for up to maybe 7-8 hundy?
Sorry to for off your topic, tank, but it sounds like you got what you wanted and it's better than making a whole new thread for a couple questions.

Considering how much money I have thrown at boats over the years - Kayaks are pretty reasonable cost wise.
A roof rack $550
Life vest ($185 mine - $99 wifes and sons - Mine has fishing pockets (they dont fish))
Paddle $125
Drift Anchor $130
Kayak $1650
You can do it a lot cheaper than that also. Resale is a very high %age - so the total cost is nothing in the long run.
Heading to fish city tomorrow for new softbait rod combo, and to eye up fish finders.

Back when I still had a good back, I used to head out off Torbay/Browns Bay with my black :) kayak and a 7/8 fly rod. 4/0 hooks with some white and black fluff tied to them (maybe just a hint of red), sinking line and a reasonably beefy leader and all was set. Early morning was the best, set out just before dawn, chase the boilups around the bay for a few hours, bit of exercise crashing through from one side to the other... lots of fun chasing (and fighting) kahawai and the occasional rat kingi.
Damn I miss that.

Once did Russel to Maraetai, Over 5 days, you get fitter as you do it. Nothing wrong with trolling a lure. Need to understand tide flows and weather for planning the good trips, you can get in the Sh.t real quick if you don't put the effort into planning.

Yeah - sharks..... Meh!
I've sort of just got into this despite owning kayaks for 15 years or so... Heaps a fun! (still working out if a gaff or net is the best option, current net is too small - yah!)
Soft baits are simple to rig but there is a knack to it... Which I'm still aquiring.. Quasi - what model long line did you get. There are some cheapies in a plastic crate on trademe?

Sure if it dove it would drag them down, but im sure they would have let it run and worn it down first before tighting up the drag and hauling it in, a dead weight wont drag it under. and you would have to be stupid to try and wind it straight in. they would of let it tow for a while to tire it out im sure.

We went out for a few mins after work... Dude coming in (tinny) had a snapper that was half buffalo I reckon... DAMN!
Damn long lines... So did I catch anything? Erm - nope....
Still, learnt that....
My fancy bait / soft bait set up I made from the internet sucks from a kayak.
I need a second rod holder for plan B
I spent more time dodging Vicki (who had a blast) than I did fishing.
Vicki didn't fall out coming in despite the gallery (general rule is more people on the beach the more nervous she gets) and enjoyed it despite forgetting how the reel worked...
DON"T try and show someone how a reel works while in two kayaks - particularly someone you sleep with... (sigh)
Our new booties thingies are da bomb...
Fun though! Vickis as happy as a clam.... She was worried she would fall in coming back through the surf as there were heaps of folks on the beach... (general rule is more than 5 watching she bins it) - not tonight though!!
Still - better than watching the telly....

I got too clever for my own good...
I have a nice little soft bait set up which works well but mr clever clogs built a modified ledger rig to work a real bait top hook and a soft bait crab bottom hook... Line was too heavy and too much on the real, botto leader was too long and kept getting tangled - whole thing was too long for the rod.
I'll re make it with a braid main line and a shorter flouro leader (man have I got he lingo down pat - almost sound like a fishyman)

as long as who you speak to knows his stuff then you wil be fine buying allmost anywhere. I got my set including $100 worth of soft baits and some jig head's and a bag for $350 shimano raider extreme 2 piece rod and a slade 4000FB reel with 300 15lb superbraid fireline , and "invisible" fluro carbon trace.
Not the best set up but more than enought for a 20lb snapper , could pull in a average size kingi 20 kgish but would have 2 be care full and play it slowly. Have seen guys pull in bigger fish on lighter set ups than mine. how .. you have to wonder sometime's

the rod and reel was from Hunting and fishing west gate, they do upgrade reel's to for + $50 more for the next one up, Mines the basic set. not bad though I did a heap of re-search before buying and think mines ok, probabally the next reel up has 2 more ball barings would be the go as well my set up was $250 for rod and reel . they are still doing this set at the moment
the like $100 of soft baits , $50 jig heads , trace, clippers ect came in a pack i scored for $99 from Norcross fishing world came in a bag , had a dvd that shows you everything you need to know . really good purchase i worked it out in all it was like $170 worth of gear for $100 so was pretty decent.

Just a bump with a wee tale of woe, and the joy of Kiwi customer service.
In short - there were problems with the Kayak (Mission Catch 390) that I purchased.
1 - It leaked
2 - I had to drill holes in the bottom to add tracking fins
Both far from ideal.
So I called Canoe and Kayak in Mirangi Bay.
Long story short, they replaced my Kayak (immediately and without question) - but I could select what I wanted - they didnt insist that I did a same with same.
They let me take a couple for test rides to see if I liked them better - and when I found one they fitted it out with all the additional bits - making it more expensive than the one I purchased (by quite a bit) - They absorbed the cost (100%) as an apology for the faults (manufacturing) I had with the first kayak.
They also offered to take me out free of charge and give me a couple of hours one on one training etc.
Seriously - It would be the best service I have had in years. So - if anyone is looking for a kayak:
1 - Don't buy the Mission Catch 390 and
2 - Definitely buy from Canoe and Kayak.

LOL - good point.
It leaked BEFORE - I didnt actually get to drill and mount the fins as I thought there was enough water entering the hull as it was and why make it worse.
