Hi, I bought a 1993 Honda Jade 250 as my first bike. I hope that someone on the forum can give me some advise on its carburetor...

I haven't looked at it myself, but according to the mechanic which I asked, a lot of people have worked on it and so I need a new one, with the manifold, which will cost over $1000us from Japan if it is even available. I also found out from another mechanic that they worked on the bike for the previous owner and that the carburetor and manifold are not the correct ones for the Jade.

Both mechanics told me to sell the bike and run, but I'd rather disclose the defect if I sell it, so I might not get my money back.

If possible I'd like to try and fix it, or get a compatible carburetor, maybe second hand. Someone from Japan told me that the carburetor is not the same as the CBR250's though.

Anyway I don't know what to compare the bike with because its the only one I have ridden.. Once its warmed up it seems ok (choke is disabled). It idles a bit fast, usually at 2'000rpm or if i turn the idle speed down, irregularly between 1'000 and 2'000, but it might die then. It usually loses power after 10'000 and doesn't go much higher, but at times it goes to 14'000. Sometimes I have to gear down to get revs over 7'000 when it is struggling. I get 22km/l which seems normal according to the thread about that, but a friend said that I should get double.

Hi guys, I got it fixed by the way... I took the carb out to take some photos. Its a 33mm Keihin VG and from what I've found out it should be ~20mm Keihin VP. (some bastard on ebay got it for 16 euros only before i saw it)

So my air box doesn't fit on it... it was just kind of taped on, obviously leaking air. I was kind of disgusted that the mechanic who worked on it could leave it like that and charge me - with dirt getting past the filter.

I also thought that the holes could affect the way it runs because there seems to be a vacuum hose connected to the air box. (it goes to the carb) Either that or the lack of restriction.

So I fixed it as best I could, and it was awesome! Something made a big difference - idling was down from 2000 to 500 or less, and no hesitation any more... so now I'm riding it as is.. I'd rather not have any useless mechanics check whether it is running properly. I should probably check though, it gets hot after a while - close to red, but borderline where the fan switches on and its stable.
