G'day,
Somebody told me you could get chain off the roll and cut to length from either Atomic or Action. Both of them told me they don't do that.
Who does? I don't need fancy O-ring crap or anything, just plain old 520-pitch roller chain. A clip-link would be helpful too.

Try renolds . www.renold.co.nz. They used to be Renold-Christian, but they appear to have gone heathen. I used to buy chain off the roll from them years ago. They still do chain of every sort, dunno if they'll cut it nowadays, but if they won't they may tell you who will.

Lol! That's the not the same Renolds (or a derivative thereof) as listed in my 30-year old workshop manual: `Replacement chains are now available in metric sizes from Renolds Limited, the British chain manufacturer.'
I'll call them up, they look a bit `industrial' and corporate-y to want to give the time of the day to a little student-boy though.

Go see Dennis at Bearing Wholesale in Morrin Road, Panmure. Most every bearing & power transmission supplier (Saeco etc) will have British Standard roller chain.

Why not just get a heavy duty chain from a bike shop? I got a non-o-ring heavy duty 525 chain with clip link for my sv from Mt Eden Motorcycles for around $60 iirc.

I used to sell Renold's chain in Welly. It's the best quality chain on the NZ market and priced very high. Mercedes-Benz have always used Renold and I think the U.K based company survives on high-end OEM production. They'll be feeling the recession pretty hard.
I priced a Renold chain for me bike at staff rates a few years ago. Once I'd picked myself up from the floor, I ended up buying one from my local bike shop. Staff-priced Renolds chain was around three times the price of a (fairly) reputable Asian equivalent bought retail.

For industrial use, not for motorcycle use which stress chains much much more so. But if you want false economy by fitting cheap go for it, just expect to also have to replace the sprockets a lot sooner.
Many of the cheap motorcycle chains on the market are abysmal quality also. The best chain on the market is DID, yes you will usually pay more but for good reason.
Cheap comes at a price, always

We used to get it off the roll at Paykel's back in the day, they stocked Regina.Since being taken over by Repco many years ago,I doubt if Paykel's stock anything of use to the public anymore.
40 years on bikes, and I've never bought the best yet....but I bet I've had more fun for my money than Robert taylor....

Well yes. I bought some very expensive good quality sprockets, and a nice O-ring chain. The O-ring chain has finally worn out, but the sprockets are still in very good condition. Buying another expensive O-ring chain to put on the sprockets would be false economy. Throwing out the sprockets and buying another new set of everything would also be false economy.
Buying an inexpensive piece of standard roller chain to see out the last of the sprockets, however, is going to be much nicer on my wallet. That'll give me another 10,000kms or more to buy some new everything.
I'd love to have the best of everything, but right now I'll have to make do with my second-hand leather jacket, scratched paintwork, and 9th-hand oil-leaking 250 single. Still having fun though!
Thanks for the ideas guys, I'll go visiting tomorrow.

Back in the days before expensive O ring chains, I used to run two chains for longer sprocket life. Alternating with one chain on bike, the other cleaned and oiled ready to swap over. The truly sad bastard is one who thinks it's a good idea to flip a sprocket over when the teeth finally give up and start to hook over!

And many OEM fitment chains are worse! Especially on MX bikes, why do they put such crap chains on their good quality sprockets!

Sorry mate but actually they stocked Tsubaki.
I probably sold more Tsubaki BIKE chain than anyone else in the whole Paykels group. We used to have the stuff in 50m rolls.
My bike was always fitted with a fairly new chain at the time -er usually made up of 4 end of rolls joined with rivlinks :calm:
Main reason the company got out of selling the stuff was that it wasn't promoted and some real bad stuffups were made supplying the wrong kinda chain for mostly big bikes.
An interesting lil factiod. Heavy duty NON o ring chain is stronger than HD o ring.
