Today about 500m from where I was rear-ended by another car whilst in my car last year (damage: $3000) I was rear-ended on the bike. Just off Lilcoln Rd in West Auckland, where I note there is a high level of reported stupid incidents of this type in the forums.

I pulled up in the huge green bike area at a red light with no traffic around at all. After a minute waiting *thump* I was rocked forward a bit. A single car had come up behind, into the bike zone, and into me in one perfectly executed movement, bending my numberplate in half against the wheel.

Luckily no other damage seems to have been inflicted, but I'll have a thorough look at the suspension later. Seemed OK on rest of the way to work.

Her excuse? "I have many worries at the moment and was thinking". Very nice.

Just another story from the trenches that is not about excessive speed, hi-viz vests or any of the other official "drive safe" crap but just poor training and selfish thinking behind the wheel - as always.

This is about the fourth thread this week about people being hit from behind while stopped at red lights. WHAT'S GOING ON OUT THERE?! :eek5: You're all making me paranoid.

Goes to show lane splitting is safer......lol, they have to smash through the cars beside you to tail end you then

I believe in all of these instances, the innocent biker was the first in line at the red light (or in one case at a pedestrian crossing). When the same thing happened to me last year I had stopped at a stop sign (again, at the front of the queue).

If there is a row of cars to hide behind I definitely take that option, especially at the traffic lights at the end of a motorway off-ramp. :pinch:

Haven't heard that one before. Usually it's "SIDSY" or "You weren't there when I looked before".
You are obviously not hurt, so that's a plus.

All seems to be OK. Driver very apolgetic (which makes it worse in some ways of course) and pulled over to give her details. Very low speed impact, which again makes you wonder how on earth they could come so close when there was no need to be anywhere near me.

Anyway, this is my hattrick -
1. stopped at lights roundabout - MTB bicyle - hit from behind, Mavix XC618 destroyed
2. stopped at lights - cage - $3000 damage other driver admitted 100% liability for
3. stopped at lights - bike - other driver admitted 100% liability - hopefully no damage.

Do I win a prize now?

Sounds like you were in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Wrong place = anywhere, wrong time = anytime.

Its like the hunting season has started and we are Bambi.

You should drive a tank for a while just to see if it goes on

Ok, it's decided, from today, I'll ask my pillion to sit the other way around so she can warn me if a car is coming too close. Maybe I should give her a gun as well...

It sounds like there are far too many people who's minds are else where while driving and not concentrating on their surroundings. Yeah we all have problems and do alot of thinking while we are driving but thats no excuse for re ending an innocent road user. It amazes me how anyone can re end someone unless the are travelling far too close which is against the law. Wake up Cagers there are motorcyclists on the road u know.:bash:

Did you call the Fuzz?? A failure to stop short ticket might make her pay a bit more attention in the future.

Plus make it easier for you if she changes her mind about liability later on.

At least you are ok man! It could have been alot worse if you were nudged into the other traffic. Im really paranoid of this happening to me so try to check mirrors until the first car behind me has stopped.. Keeping it in gear just incase.

Didnt you see her coming?

There's a horrible picture I've seen on another forum of a rider (deceased) stuck in the grill of one of those American school buses. He got rear ended at a red traffic light.

Another rider on the same forum narrowly escaped death when he was stopped in traffic. He saw in his rear view mirrors a car charging up from behind him. He just had time to pull in between two stationary cars ahead of him to avoid being killed when the crash happened.

When stopped at lights or a give way I always keep an eye on my rear view mirrors, often idling in first gear, clutch in, so I can move quickly if I have to, and always have somewhere to go to get out of trouble.

It's about lowering your odds whenever you can and assuming nothing.

Ring her and tell her she's done $4000 worth of damage (just make some shit up)... it'll stress her out heap and will be good fun. When she stops taking your calls, send a fake letter from 'your solicitor', keep stressing the bitch out. Bit of luck that combined with her 'many worries' will be enough to make her kill herself.

Off Topic: I see Sinfull's tag line is "bowls can wait"

I was fronted by a mature woman, about my age :-), in the Westfield Mall in Riccarton a while ago. "Was I a likely recruit for the Fendalton Bridge Club?" She asked. I was very polite, of course, but as I'm only 56 years old I was taken back by the question.

The day I join a bridge club is the day I sell my bikes and get one of those bloody mobility scooter things, with NOS, of course!

off topic here: I know this is no excuse but some cars today are so freaken boring to drive it's no wonder people vegetate behind the wheel. I honestly dread driving any long distance in the company cars cos they literally put me to sleep.

Nothing like a big bore V8 to keep you awake behind the wheel !
