three weeks ago i tootled into local tony jury m/c shop, asked for pricing on a set of sport demons.
all lovely and ready to deliver at the price of $169.00 and $238.00 incl g.s.t.
i put down $260.00 and then paid for the rear to be fitted.
i got an invoice in the mail,
rear tire $260.00 excl g.s.t, front tire $169.00 excl g.s.t
right? so i rung them and got that sorted and my account was re-credited and then i wasnt aware of what the tires actually cost.
i kept putting payments towards the fron untill today, i ring yesterday and say "hey mate, how much do i owe on the front tire?"
replys "hey you are $57.99 in credit...."
sweeeeet, i booked the bike in and droped her off this morning. went to pick the bike up and "the fitting was $34.20, you owe us $92.12 before you can take the bike home"
i ask why and they said "you were $57.99 [or there ish] in debit"
WTF?
i hadnt transefered any money into my spending account as i was lead to believe i was in CREDIT!
so mr head mech started accusing me of trying to pull a fast one when i brought up THEIR mistake. i didnt enjoy being accused and wanted my bike NOW! so i told them to fit the front tire that was on the bike before and give me a refund [i was being very harrased by this wanker] he laughed at me and told me im trying to get a tire for free, i pointed out that they led me to believe i was in CREDIT NOT F**KING DEBIT. he continued to blame this on me for not having the money that i was not told to have....
i got very frustrated when he refused to give me a refund.
i got on the bike [old tire back on] and went to see a lawyer for free legal advice ;) [thanks fiona for the chat]
i found out that yes i was in the right and yes this guy was being immature about their mistake. meanwhile my darling mother had rung them and said they are legally bound to give me a refund.
i went down the shop and got what i had payed towards the front tire back and i got a nice apology.

now tell me what you think? is that arrogant and pathetic or am i just a gnats nudger?

In future get them to do written quotes, and document everything, that is if you are going to continue to use them of course, mind you that applies to nearly anywhere unless you really trust them.

Some folks seem to forget the old rule one pissed of customer can lose you 10 potential customers.

Sounds like and outfit here in Christchurch, wont name names but they are the agents for the bikes you love.

I no longer have any expectations when it comes to any type of service in NZ. It really is appalling. In just the last week and a bit...

1) My 5 year old dishwasher broke down. A week later and they tell me they don't have a replacement part but they can sell me a new dishwasher. I told them where to go.

2) 2 brand new mountain bikes. One had a hunting problem with the gear change and the other ones disc brake was sticking. Dropped them off and was told it would be at least 2 weeks before they can look at them. 2 weeks?

3) My 12 month old watch stopped dead. I took it into the NZ agent in Auckland to replace the battery and they said it will take 6 - 8 weeks... What? Apparently they have to send it to Switzerland. Note: this actually happened in Nov and I'd forgotten about it until I rang them on Monday. "We don't know sir." What?

4) Telecom reduced my internet speed because I backed up some movies. I rang them to up my cap but they couldn't do it over the phone and asked me to wait for 5 minutes. I hung up. Orcon is really good now.

5) Booked my car into panel beaters to fix a small dent. Turned up and had arranged for a friend to drop me back home. The panel beater says, nah too busy today. What?

6) Got some new taps a few months ago and the damn plumber broke the monsieur (sp) It's like a filter which softens the water so it doesn't splash everywhere. Not a biggie but they've got no idea and can't be bothered following it up. This is german brand, not some warehouse brand.

Not bad eh.

What brand MTBs, and which shop? Presumably you're looking to get it done under warranty?

Aside from that, I've started using Bike Central (http://www.bikecentral.co.nz/) in Britomart Place. Best bike shop in town, IMHO, and I've been a customer of most of them at one time or another.

theres your problem. Buy an Omega Speedmaster Pro: manual wind chrono "The only watch worn on the Moon". You will never need another battery. Ever.

Watches with batteries = fail.

The bikes are Marin and got them on Barry's Point Road. Under warranty so no problem there.

The watch has an emergency beacon in it and they said they are too afraid to touch it.

Orcon are bloody brilliant. Best customer service I've had from anyone in years.

They are quite particular on the criteria of using the beacon. I even had to sign a contract. I'm not sure if a lost wrist is an acceptable reason but we could get drunk one night and try.

Sounds like they might be breaking the CGA. There's a reasonable expectation that a major household appliance will be serviceable five years after it is purchased.

Talk to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs if you want to take it further:

Spare parts and repair facilities

This is a guarantee that a manufacturer must give. Unless the manufacturer has let you know that it is not possible, you have a right to repair facilities -some place that can fix your goods - and spare parts for goods you buy.

This right applies to all new goods. It also applies to second hand goods that have been imported into New Zealand and you are the first person to buy them.

This right only applies for a reasonable time after the goods have been bought.

If you buy imported goods, the importer must take reasonable steps to provide repair facilities and spare parts. You can not expect a New Zealand company that makes the same brand to provide these things for imported models.

I want to take this opportunity to report some GOOD service.

Cycletreads..

In Nov I got a tyre fitted while over in NZ.

The fitter guy was a bit of a tool, and gave me a bit of lip cos I wanted to fit a Pilot Power 2CT to my GTS100AE (Tourer)

He dint have one so I reluctantly accepted a Pilot Road 2..still a damn fine tyre byt once youv'e had a Power 2CT it's hard to go back!

He made a shit job of fitting, did not re-tighten stuff, and one of my panniers ended up sliding up Glenfeild Rd.

I emailed them, but really did not expect a whole lot.

I received a reply, basically saying what a top guy the fitter is and how its unlikely he did a shit job but that it would be looked into.

I pretty much thought.."Yeah right" and did not expect to hear any more.

2 days later, I got a very pleasant and appologetic email from the manager.

He did nopt blame anyone else for anything, in fact he backed his guy up..but...and heres the good bit...he said that he was very keen that I should be satisfied in my dealings, and offered a very generous refund.

I was very happy...these days we don't tend to have very high expectations, and its really nice when they are exceeded!

I bet my Seiko cost less, it keeps perfect time and when I needed a new battery the shop changed it while I waited. I have never heard of waiting 6-8 weeks for a battery replacement.

It's really annouying isn't when someone makes a mistake with your account? Especially when it's not in our favour, right?

I'm not trying to make any excuses for the team at T/Jury, but I know they are good guys and if you didn't know already, they've been through a really tough couple of months since Tony was killed in an accident in December. (You can read about it on the Wairarapa Times Age website link below). Maybe we could show a little compassion and give them a break?

If your watch is waterproof rated to any decent depth, a battery change should take about a week as It's sent to the naval base to test its waterproofing after the back has been opened.

I have this mental picture of the watch coming back from the navy tanks, and note saying, yep, battery is fine, but it leaked so the watch is rooted. Better luck next time...

Anyhow...

Frigging Tony at Haldanes... I'm going to have real problems if I can't bitch about the parts guy.

I turned up today, wrong brake lever in hand (along with Master Cylinder). As I thought, I was wrong about year, so Tony pulls out a heap of levers, and he finds the correct one (which turned out to be a third of the price). Efficient and cheap. And he did an awesome deal on a shiny new track stand.

Excellent customer service. Who would have thought it possible?

Tony is pretty good - he managed to give me the wrong oil filter a couple of weeks back, but when I took it back he apologised and gave me 2 of the right ones for my trouble. I also compared prices on a couple of things and found Haldanes was cheaper than Colemans.

Yeah service in nz, wtf somone could open a bussiness any bussiniess and clean up if they could offer good price and customer service (i.e ringing up your frigging clients and saying "hey mate i said the bike would be ready tomorrow, but a part hasnt shown up, i'll call you back when it arrives and give you an eta" and then actually doing it.

the interesting thing here - I live on the shore, and yet I drive through Auckland traffic twice a month to buy parts from Haldanes (after losing patience with another Suzuki dealer on the shore). I've spent a reasonable chunk of cash at Haldanes on bits already. I wonder if they're missing my disposable income at the other store??

Tell me about it, beware of heat pumps, most have a 5 year warranty, our top of the line Mitsubishi brand packed a sad, its between 5 - 6 years old, needs new compressor, approx $1000 + installation, but, sorry, no parts available any more! WTF? Bought a known name at the time for this reason!?
Haier brand dishwasher, about four years old, keeps breaking bits in the top basket, since changed suppliers, no parts available ....
