I went into Sawyers after work today (friend bought the sporty Sawyers scooter) and I saw 2 KB'ers. Turns out I "knew" the one, who rides past me every morning when I'm in the cage (giving me thoughts of accelerating into the barrier to flip the car onto 2 wheels, stunt style!)
For those that haven't been out of NZ, you have no idea how small the city / country is. In Cape Town, you can see someone in the city, and you can be almost certain you'll never see them again. I often see the same people whilst on my travels (Obviously the one I'm stalking doesn't count)
Thats also why it's best to keep dirty laundry inside ;)

that's another thing I love about NZ.. you try having even a community as close as the KB world in the UK.. I just can't see it happening as well.. I often see the same people going to work etc, and the real scary thing is when you see heaps of peeps you know while shopping etc (not that I do much.. in fact any lately, I just remember it from the sheep days..)
Tis a small world after all

Yup, four million people isn't really very much in the grand scheme of things.
I'm always running into people I know, in the most unexpected places.
Like, who woulda thunk that I'd randomly turn off SH1 to buy a bag of lollies at Candyland outside Ngaruawahia a couple of weeks back, and run into ajturbo and son, up from Tauranga, as I was pulling back out of the parking lot? It was, like, middle of the working week, nothin' goin' on, dead as anything, and HELLO, two KBers living 400km apart just randomly meet in the middle. These sorta things just *happen* around here.
*And* another thing... it never pays to annoy your employer too badly when you leave a job here if you want to work in the same field again, because the contacts between people in all of the companies in most of the industries in New Zealand are completely, utterly incestual.

Hmm, uk.rec.motorcycles comes close. Most of the geographical distances between regular contributors are similar to what we have here on KB, and social events/rides happen on a similar frequency with similar attendance.
You certainly don't get anything like that in the USA, though.

yeah, I guess after 3.5 seconds more thought, does make sense.. still wouldn't be sure if it'd be as tight as us friendly lot :buggerd:
I don't really know any bikers from the UK tho, but there are a few around the KB place, so can you lot fill us in..??
The US? Nah, way too big.. but I'm sure there must be something.. more regional (state) I guess

Most places like this in the states are to elitist. Such as you have to ride a certain bike or have to be a certain age ect, ect. Just pointless to me, you're either a biker or not no matter what you ride.
May have seen a few KBers on the roads but no way to tell till I actualy meet peaple in person.

Compared to your average UKRMer, most KBers are blinding rays of love and sunshine.
Must be the weather up there that makes the bikers such miserable grumpy cunts.

Yeah, wot AD said. For some reason most of the American bike forums are either all wanky and "My bike spanks your bike", "No it doesn't! And anyway, my daddy can buy out your daddy's stock options!", or dedicated to technical stuff rather than the actual riding part.

yer .. about 15 years ago i was on a ride with the nelson road turing club, to the wangani races...
there were about 15 bikes on the trip,
after the races my wife and i left them and went on our own little trip around the country.... about a week later we were heading into taupo,, and decided to pull over in the middle forrest (side of the road!!!) to ajust something....
when in the distance we could hear a duc....... coming at speed..
..
..
then around the corner he came... one of the guys we were with ....
he pulled over to say hi... and told us where the rest of the group were...
but (if i can remeber corectly) the duc rider wasn't even suppose to be still in the north island!! and we were suppose to have been on that road a day earler!!!!
small world!
lucky he did stop.. we didn't have any where to stay then... ie there were NO computers around then..

*SNIP* you're either a biker or not no matter what you ride..
Yep.
Used to wave to the scooter riders I encountered when commuting to work even tho' some bikers I've met would deem them "not real bikers" because they're not roaming around on 250cc-or-bigger bikes.
Way I figure it is: Any bugger willing to risk life and limb in the pissing rain or freezing cold is a "real biker" - even if (s)he rides a moped.
You could argue that they have a better claim to the title than someone who hangs up the helmet at the first hint of inclement weather and only rides on nice fine summer's days.
Not dissing fair weather bikers, either - they risk life and limb out there with the rest of us.

The downside to the 'Small world' thing is that sometimes you run into people you'd rather not. That big hairy neanderthal on the HD that you dissed at the lights last week. The pretty young one-night-stand. SD & spud.

here is a group in the states who seem to have a little community like KB, mind you it is just in our area not nationwide like KB

Er...excuse me jr? The words "statement" and "sweeping" come to mind.
I've met loads of fabulous, friendly, like minded folk whilst on organised trips, rallies and tours (through Bike Magazine for example)...all of which would grace these threads more than adequately.

Well consider that that area may be about the size of the north island if not the whole country. Depends on wich bay area they are talking about, dont have the time right now to check.

The word "misinterpretation" comes to mind.
I didn't say 'UK bikers'.
I said 'UKRMers'.
Big difference.
[Edit: Hmm. No, I didn't, did I? I said 'bikers'. Point taken. I was, however, thinking of UKRMers, rather than the general population. As Mrs Random would say, "Well, *I* know what I meant!"]

My brother has been living in Canada for over 30yrs,but as he works for an airline I get to see him every few years, thats good because we are both into bikes.
In 2000 he came out, arriving on the tuesday, not quite being able to catch Paeroa, but went to the Puke Classics anyway (he's been to 2 Paeroa races) I had gone down that year and Picked up a spare XLV750 motor from Malcolm Kirkby,we arranged to meet there to do the deal, stripped the alt stator out and got my bike going on monday so I could show my brother my new bike...running.
So I drag the bike out of the shed when we get him home off the plane....one of the first things he says is - ''did you meet up with Malcolm?''....like...WHAAAAT!!???,how the HELL do you know Malcolm Kirkby and that I was going to see him on sunday? He has a Suzuki Turbo, and Malcolm is on the Turbo site forum and they had been talking and Malcolm put 2 &2 together that the guy with the XLV750 was the brother of the guy with the XN85....small world eh?
So that same year I am showing him around the bike shops and we go into what was Len Perry's old shop - my brother had served his apprenticship at the service station at the top of the hill (now a Repco) Len had owned the station at one time and we had both spent a lot of time in Len's place. So we were talking old times with the present owner and I said our next stop was to be Bob Haldanes - so my brother says - ''oh,so Bob's got a bike shop now has he?''...like....WHAAAT!!??,you haven't been in the county apart from short holidays for 30 years, and you say you know Bob Haldane,on first name terms? - ''Yeah, when Bob first came to this country he worked with us at the garage up on the hill there,he was great to work with,I remember him well.''
So we go into Haldanes, and Bob as usual is doing the tyres...as we walk in he looks over at us,stands up and keeps looking - ''Yeah, that's him'' says my brother.I say go over and talk to him,but my brother says ..''nah,he wouldn't remember me''....but I think Bob saw something familiar about the guy who walked into his shop....small world eh?
