...Apart from a music store?
I just havent seemed to find one that has a decent selection of older stuff.
Idearly a website or store devoted to it or a section devoted to it.

Isn't there a Real Groovy in Hawke's Bay now? EDIT: Apparently not.
If not, the www.realgroovy.co.nz (http://www.realgroovy.co.nz) website is really good.
Rainbow
Black Sabbath
Deep Purple
Hawkwind
Motorhead

I got a lot of mine from compilation CDs in the bargain bins.
For every Sheena Easton there is a Copperhead Road.
And then more recently from iTunes. A lot of best of/greatest hits.

If you're into the classic stuff, check out Valient Thorr, Moustache and Clutch.
All newer bands, but with that awesome 70's fuzz sound.

i havnt actually BOUGHT a CD since the original release of Brothers in Arms..
the CD's i DO own have all been promo copies
,
most of the music in my collection has either been downloaded, swapped with mates or , in one case.. core dumped from my last radio station's music library
i may be a dinosaur, but i firmly believe that there has been nothing original since the early 80's (no.. not the pop/ new wave 80's either)
its all samples, mashups and ripoffs anymore

Check out http://www.rockdetector.com type in artist you like and see what happens, It used to cross reference everything, Don't know about now, Site won't work for me, I'm hoping its temporary.
There is also an online radio station where you type in a band name and it puts together a playlist featuring similar groups, Can't remember what its called, Though its damn cool.
Personally I'm building up a CD collection via trademe, up to a couple hundred so far, Its going to be huge in a few years, getting in 5 or 6 cd's a week.
Gave up on digital crap, The compression ruins it, and the quality varies so much that it makes it pointless. And if you can't hear that its ruined then either your ears or your stereo are crap.
edit-Rock Detector just came to life, Done a search for Alice Cooper, it listed a shitload of musicians who have played with him and linked to all the other bands they in turn have played with. Just follow your nose and type a few of the bands listed into youtube....Should keep you busy for years.

The radio station is http://www.jango.com/
I typed in Nugent and it created a play list including <form class="play-splash" id="user-start-form" onsubmit="new Ajax.Request('/artist_ratings/guest_more_artists?station_id=108591460', {asynchronous:true, evalScripts:true, parameters:Form.serialize(this)}); return false;" action="/artist_ratings/guest_more_artists?station_id=108591460" method="post">

There is always the iTunes Store as others have said. You only hear a little bit of each song but it is usually enough to see if you like it.
Also a lot of older iTunes songs are available in the higher bitrate format for no extra cost. I guess they made their money on the older acts years ago.
JB HiFi can get most things in for you, once you know what CD to get! Mail order or wait...theres one due in the Bay soon.
PlayRock UK and Rock.com are 2 internet radio stations I listen to a fair bit. Good for some of the older rock groups.

Nice to see someone appreciating the genesis of heavy rock.
I'd suggest downloading tracks from Frostwire or Piratebay from various bands to see what you like and then hunt down the albums. Haven't checked but most stuff is available on Amazon and Ebay.
Uriah Heap
10 Years After
The Who - Live At Leeds

You could always come round here and check out my collection of original LPs from the 70s. And no, there's no Beegees or Leo Sayer...You can't have them but you could take notes....
