View Full Version : Neighbour's house alarm - what would you do?

klingon

My neighbour (across the road) has just had his house alarm go off. He's not home, his front window is wide open, and I don't have his phone number. He was burgled a few weeks ago.

I can't look around the back of his house because his gate is locked. There has been no suspicious activity that I have seen, but there are plenty of ways out of his property (eg over the back fence into the next street) that would mean anyone could get out without me seeing them.

What would you do?

My next door neighbour has had the rare activation; once being at night with a few "youffs" in the vicinity.
I always take a look.

What he said!

Our neighbour's alarm activates a message to her mobile but it doesn't always work so I usually ring her and then ring the police. Each time it's been a false alarm but we've had a few burglaries out our way recently so they like to come out and check to ensure no one has broken in.

Most police say they would rather come out to a false alarm than be called the following day when stuff is found to be missing. Bit odd his window is open too - maybe that's how they got in or out?

Yup - ring the cops, then grab another one of your neighbours and check it out.

Safety for you, builds community all round.

Living in the Bronx here alarms go off all the time:pinch:. Yes the crime rate is up here at the moment:pinch:
If it was a neighbour that is nice to you and as you said had his place knocked off a few weeks ago..... I would call the local police station and express your concerns saying that the place had allready been hit in the past few weeks.
Then if the police attend thats good. If they find something thats better.....
Remember if it puts your mind at ease do it.

This is 2009. Do nothing. Crack open a bear while video recording your neighbours house being burgled. Post it on YouTube and see how many people watch it.

Thanks for the advice everyone (everyone except Finn that is - thanks for the laugh, Finn).

I was just on the phone to the local police station when my neighbour came screaming into his driveway. Apparently he gets a call on his mobile when the alarm goes off but it took him about 30 mins to get home from work.

Everything is secure, so I can only assume it was the wind blowing a curtain around through the open window - he thinks he must have left it open when he went to work this morning.

There were no other neighbours home at the time, so I went over for a look by myself as soon as the alarm started. Hmmm... perhaps that wasn't wise... but I wasn't going to confront anyone and I reckon any burglers would have run off if they had seen me turn up.

Maybe I should have put my bike gear on first, instead of going over in my pink floral sun-dress and sparkly jandals. :o

You saw it here first guys!

Good that it wasn't a real burglary - and I bet your neighbour appreciated you calling the cops in case it was.

Yeah - he was appreciative and very surprised that I had both checked out his house and called the police.

Seems most people are too busy cracking open bears these days to bother :oi-grr:

I can imagine that some KBers would be pleasant to view naked while others would be the equivalent of having acid thrown on your retinas...

Our neighbour always has a pen and paper ready (she's retired) and, when our alarm goes off, she watches our drive for any vehicle leaving so she can get the details of it. I wouldn't expect her to check out the property since she's elderly and her safety needs to be considered.

If it was Cajun and I that heard another alarm going off, we'd most likely take a look at the property from a distance at first, and then head towards the place (noisily) if we saw something dodgey happening. I figure it's better to interupt them in the act than to leave them to it.

Our neighbour is a busy-body, so he checks out the neighbours' alarms, or suspicious activities - he's caught one burglar in the ROW across the road. Our alarm was annoying for a while - had a faulty sensor. Luckily (?) a lightning storm a while back fried a panel in the main box, and another sensor, so we had the thing overhauled for free to a better one (old model no longer available). Both the old one and the new one phone me on my cellphone if triggered, but the new one also allows me to phone it and perform some controls remotely, like resetting it.

By the way MotoGirl - what's up with those MENTAL roundabouts with traffic lights out your way? First there were traffic lights AND roundabouts, then just roundabouts, now they've combined the two! It doesn't work! It's hard enough either watching the lights or where you're driving, but to have to watch both AND the traffic is blardy hard work! ANd it's mental having people stop in the middle of the roundabout because the light's changed.
Whatever is Roundabouta coming too? More things to confuse the poor old ducks that retire there...

Good for you checking it out. I remember a house alarm close by here that went off and sounded for 15 mins, I am not a close neighbour (cant see the house) then it stopped. Couple of hours later it happened again, then again, then again. All friggen weekend long this thing was going off. Rang the local security company (we dont have a manned station here) and they sad, yes we know all about it, nothing is wrong.

Turned out this idiot went away for the weekend, left his catflap open, so pussy could have something to eat. He did not have pet sensitive sensors so yes it went off everytime the cat farted in the house. When questioned this bloke actually had the hide to say, yes I know they are not pet sensitive, but I could not leave the cat locked out all weekend.

Fair enough too! Bastidge would eat the local native birds. But he really should've locked it in the gargre, or tied it to the clothesline.

Or not set his alarm, or paid for the cat to live some place else, or drowned the thing in the toilet before he left or somefink ;)

No he moved. Shit we had an alarm on the house when we bought it, it did not have pet sensitive sensors, so we never set it. We could not afford to change the sensors at the time. Then we got burgled, while we were asleep in our bed. ARSEHOLES! About scared the shit out of me. I borrowed some money and replaced the sensors and hey presto, try that again you fuckers!

This thread is a clear demonstration that house alarms, like car alarms, are a complete and utter waste of money. Nobody takes any notice of them, because they are generally activated by anything other than a burglar.

And what the fuck is a "rozza"?

OK ... two things ... he doesn't want basic home security .. leaves his windows wide open ... the alarm will not stop people going in and stealing again ....

If he happens too often .. I call noise control ....

Now only if he insists on opening the windows, setting the alarm and going out.

I think it was a mistake and as far as I know he has never done it before (and at the time I thought someone had forced it open to get in). Apparently he got a couple of kittens at Christmas and has been keeping them in the house until he can get their vaccinations up to date. He probably intended to just leave the window open a crack so they wouldn't suffocate in the heat.

He seems like a nice enough guy and his alarm has never gone off before so this incident won't put me off taking action if it happens again.

The world would be a better place if everyone waved at their neighbours! I think I'll set up a neighbourhood waving group. :D

god, i hate house alarms. before we moved, the neighrbour kids had a quadbike or something. dunno how the hell they did it, but they used to take the alarm off the house, put it on the quad bike and ride around the property and street with the damn alarm screaming. we called the cops every single time ["concerned neighbours"] but i dont think they ever gave a rats about it being mis used.

but yeh... id ring it in to the cops if i knew no one was home.

brother got his house broken into last week. gets home and stuff like digital camera [and card] gone, playstation gone, his kids dvds gone, and the kids books have been sorted through. we know who did it [his ex would have sent either one or both of her kids in to do it. shes taken the camera before and lied about it.] but the cops really dont care. they didnt bother coming to look for fingerprints for 2 days.
