View Full Version : Jazbug back in Welly- but have I killed the Beastie?

Hello all

I'd like to be a little more triumphant about having coaxed the wee 'n' from Welly to Northland and the back down again (not to mention the 'unscheduled stop' after the National Park to make a donation to the Highway Patrol- for speeding!). But (having topped up the oil on our last gas-up stop) discovered the level to be HORRIFICALLY low on arrival. Taking out the earplugs, I realised that the 'admiring stares' I'd been getting through town were less on account of the Beastly's captivating good looks (splutter) and more likely caused by her rasping death throes.
It sounds like a rapid tapping in the upper part of the engine- metal on metal.
Now, she's had some care lavished on her lately, and was running really well. I don't know how long she was so low, but having chucked some oil in quickly 150ks before we got here, she can't have been dry for long, not that I suppose that matters.
Sorry if I'm gibbering. Lack of sleep.
Does anyone have a clue what to do?
:weep:

PS I'm kind of broke, too- what with the fine and having 14 days to get a WOF/Rego sorted out. D'oh!

First thing thing ya gotta do, is come in and get a welcome home kiss from ya ol' mate WT.

Second thing, is have someone who knows something (obviously not me) listen to your "rattly bits" and diagnose it.

Sounds terminal though luv, sorry.

WELCOME BACK!

Like music, it will be either minor or major.

No oil tends to result in major destruction pretty quickly so if you are lucky it will just be a loose tappet or something minor. On the other hand... it could be expensive.

(don't you just love internal combustion engines)

Top up the oil and see what happens? (oil light goes out OK?) If it sounds OK ride it gently to WMC and ask their opinion. You being broke won't have much effect on the motor, it won't care much either way but asking an opinion does not cost much.

Minimum I suggest dropping the oil to see if there is any debris in there?

Where is the bike? Vicki and I will possibly be coming in to the HD poker thingy on sunday so we could pop in and take a squizz / listen ?

Paul N

ps - OK tell us about the speeding ticket...

It's nice to have you back in Welly! Sounds like a bit of a trip you had... I know nothing (in crazy european accent) about bike problems, but someone here will give you a hand.

Jaz, what were the circumstances of your fine? Speeding much? Also, click here I know how you feel (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=7070) (incase you hadn't seen it yet)

Catch up soon? There's a Karaoke night coming up (I think? )
Dave.

I suspect shes gonna need a top end overhaul. The top end got pretty hot etc etc.
Good news is -its cheap as chips to do a sr250. ane even better news -the parts are readily available -Head gasket etc.
I think the record for one of those is 30 minutes--Engine out -head off fault diagnosed.

Well, I s'pose I'd best go get some fresh oil and drop out the old and see what drops out (hopefully not the powdered remains of what used to be the entire bloody engine). Unfortunately the thing has no oil or fuel light at all at all. All there is is a murky window in the side which is easy to misread when in a hurry.
Directly after that I'll drag my weeping self over to WMC for my Official Welcome Home Hugs.

Gin sounds good, Mrs. Slip; the valium seems to be wearing off...

(Oh, and hi, Dave: sadly I'm going to be in Oz that weekend, but I will of course be expecting a detailed account...!)

Eeek, Dave!

Is that a set up..? What happened..?
Oh, and cheers for the offer of a 'squizz', Paul; it's languishing in my front garden, which is near the centre of town, and conveniently close to my kitchen, which provides a wide(ish) range of fine refreshments lovingly prepared by a cheerful (oh, ok- sobbing gently) and capable staff...

PM me your cell number and I'll see if sunday is OK.

Chuck some oil at it and tootle down to WMC would be #1 idea though.

Welcome back Jaz. Always a good idea to check oil consumption esp on small or older bikes on long trips. They always use more as they are at higher revs for a long period of time. Use more oil when it is old & thins out as well (leaving the more sludgy stuff).

I suspect the valves may be in need for serious readjustment & I hope the cams & bore is still intact.

Good luck.

If the motor is the same in effect as the GN/GS125 then it could be the cam bearing races in the head, if they get dry they tend to grind out as it's built to a cheap design. The bad news if it's that then you need a new head.

From what I have heard it's a common problem for people running gn125 based buckets. I acquired a couple of shagged 125 heads with that sort of damage when I got mine.

Hehe, nope - Not a setup up! Speeding, failing to stop, assaulting an officer, resisting arrest, assaulting an officer (again), escaping custody and another assaulting an officer charge. I've learnt my lesson now, I'll just have to ride faster, and not get caught!

Looking for a head donor. For me.
Oh, and for the bike, too.
Apparently it sounds like cam/rockers; confirmation some time this week when my obliging and very kind friend H. will pop by and open her up....
*sob*

Oh, and Dave... you baaaaaaaaaaad...!
What a bugger. Were you *really* done for 120 or were they cutting you a break? I was lucky and got let off about 40k or summat. And I think he though I was attempting to run from the law at first- earplugs meant I couldn't hear his siren, and only stopped when I saw him in my mirrors..!
Or it could have been the Voices drowning out everything else..?
