k, me n Limmy are heading out west for a couple of hours or so. Meet at the car park behind Repco in New Lynn at 10am, then head up to Titirangi onto Scenic Drive, along to Piha, grab a drink and reflect, then back to Scenic Drive, and keep going along, might turn off to Bethals Beach for that road too, then back to Scenic drive along to Henderson/Swanson and see what from there. Some can split and head off, else might just head back along Scenic Drive to Titirangi then on..
Be a slow-med pace, more of a cruise really. Be good for newbies and anyone wanting to see the sights (but concentrate on riding!!)..
Any takers?
Brief details:
Repco @ 10am, going down scenic drive for a couple of hours
I'm sure Limmy could catch up with anyone at the Caltex in Mt Welly, and I can do the usual Cyclespot over the shore, say around 9.30 at both places, then Lim and I have arranged to meet at the Placemakers at the back of Vic Park (Cook St??) at 9.45, then onto Repco at 10, so anywhere along that route is sure to be fine..

then, probably a bit like me, you'll either have to stick in 1st gear, or do a lot of waiting at the end..
Or just try this slowing down thing.. not sure on it myself, and rarely works, but I'll give it a go..
If enuff big bikes wanna go, then could split into 2 I guess..

yeap. would be great if a few more 250s can come a long. that way i won't be the only one that's always left behind. Would be great to meet some other newbies as well cause the few times I've been out with the KBers most of them are quite experienced and way out of my league.
NEWBIES UNITE!!

I'd come, but I will be pushbicycling at that time. If for some reason I'm not, I may turn up and show y'all what the headlight of a Zeal looks like when it's getting smaller in your mirrors.

Don't listen to him! Don't be sucked in - he's obviously using the Two Smoker line about how slow he is!
Viva Vee and I went riding with him yesterday, and he most definitely was not slow.
"Poor, poor me - I'm just an old grannny and I ride really, reaalllllllly slow." :weep:
Yeah, right!

As you head down through Waitarua towards Swanson there is a 50 limit that starts after the Te Henga/Bethells turn off.

Take Waitakere Road across to Kumeu and then head up HW16 to the North Western.

that's where we'll stop. For those wanting to get off, or had enough, they can go that way back to the NW, else I'll probably just turn around and do the 20 minute trip back along Scenic Drive to New Lynn.. Or might visit my dad since I'm out that way.. Anyone want a BBQ lunch..??? Could always ask and see..

Yeap. I'll be more than happy to meet up with anyone at the caltex. shouldn't be too many short asians with a CBR at that time of day so I'll be easy to spot.

Have a good ride! Take care if you go on Bethels road, there's quite a few unmarked slooow corners.

Well that was a lovely wee ride - out to Piha for brunch then on to Bethels Beach before heading home again. 9 riders so it was just the right size group.
I scared the crap out of myself early in the ride taking a few corners too fast (and in cruiser style) so my confidence plummeted for the rest of the ride until Bugjuice slowed down and led the way through the twisties. So apologies to Dveus who followed me for quite a while and had to put up with me crawling through some of the twisties or hard braking when I fucked up. I'll get there. I don't remember having the same problem when I went down 22 the other day - perhaps I was overtired from not going to bed until 2am.
Oh well, I'll just practice, practice, practice.

Short but sweet. My ride started badly getting stung twice by a wasp on the stomach, ouch. So I took it real easy from then on. Did some nice monos coming back into Henderson, they are getting better all the time. Highlight would have to be seeing Bugjuice do his first proper wheelie. Well done mate.. :niceone:

I was right behind you two when you were playing. Swanman you did a few good ones, and Bugjuice that was a good effort for your first one!!! I was having a good laugh at your antics and wished I had the courage to try one too! Glad Deaths tips got you both fired up!

You're definitely getting better. Looks mighty impressive from a spectator point of view. I thought they were quite an improvement from the ones u were doing on the way down to Paeroa. Would love to get some photos of those nice high wheelies :yeah:

Stop worrying about how fast you're not going, just think about taking nice lines and being smooth on the control inputs. And then one day you'll be surprised to notice that you're just cruising, but all the squids on R1s are somehow starting to ride slow and drop away in your mirrors...
Worrying slows you down. Chill and enjoy :)

Was a good ride. Thanks for everyone's advice and tips and also thanks to bugjuice for organising it and stopping at turns to give directions.
BugJuice...i think you did a pretty good impression of a traffic cop directing traffic at a broken traffic light. Well done.
Highlight for me was going too fast round a corner and getting acquainted with the ditch. As I was going through the ditch I was thinking "I hope nobody sees me....how embarrassing." thenI look in my side mirror and see dat orange 636. Bugger.
After all that riding I'm definitely keen for a drink. :apint:

So did good old Gt North Rd and came home.

ahh.. you're all too kind..
Yeah, the day was good overall, and a bit of action to boot, from a touch of off roadin, to some air under the front. The roads weren't too bad in general, but I forgot about the lack of signage on most of the corners. Something you don't notice when you know the roads and don't look for that. The surface itself wasn't too bad either. Was expecting worse, and no one told me there was a surf comp going on at Piha! But considering that, traffic wasn't all the bad either..
Limmy, you just gotta read the road further ahead, and don't be intimidated if you see faster people in front or behind. Just do your pace and remember you've probably got more lean than you think. I've had my fair share of mishaps like yours, you learn from it, and they'll become less frequent..
Generally, I enjoyed the ride, and the turn-out was more than I had expected! And I'm glad no one binned it on my 'first arranged ride', altho doesn't look all that great that there were close calls! Won't happen again!
Now to work on those wheelies!
Cheers guys..
ps - also took 2 pics when we stopped at the top of Piha, but I can't load them on yet. Hopefully get it done soon, will post when I can

What say you?A good part of that ride could have been done as a day trip. Riders did have the option of returning the evening and not staying over (they just would have missed out on the beers:apint: ). Zapf only stayed overnight because we tacked the Wiapoua Forest loop on to the ride (and well worth it too), otherwise he would have returned to AK from Kia Iwi lake easily within that day. Hope PT & Zapf didn't find my Bachelor pad too scary:msn-wink: The drink seem to go down well but:drinknsin

If I'd realised it was on, I would probably have come, just for the day, as the vifferbabe was asking a couple of weeks ago "How about going to Kai Iwi lakes?" "Where are they?" "How far?" "Could we do it in a day?" etc. etc.
So we'll probably be in next time.
