um, yeah.

Just got back from a quick nip around the block to New Plymouth to cross off another task from my things to do list. I have so far been to Cape Reinga, East Cape, and have now crossed Cape Egmont off the list.

It all wasn't that easy though, of course being me nothing is ever simple.

Story time.... :baby:

The bike averages about 250km before it hits reserve, but today it only wanted to do 230km on a whole tank, which was way unexpected. I was approaching the first fuel station in about 100km, the tank had done about 180'ish km so I decided not to bother about filling up, bad choice. Coming along and the bike chokes and coughs so I flick it onto reserve. A short while later coming up a very nice steep hill it dies...

I start pushing the bike, and guess who comes roaring along.............

Closely followed by.... GSXRTrace (did I spell it right?)

They were kind enough to head back and grab me some gas in a small container and bring it back, it added at least an hour to their journey. Thanks so much you two, I owe you two a tank full!

So that's my newbie biker moment for the day :2thumbsup

The weather turned to crap... I've heard a few bad luck stories about this highway and with a new rear tyre I want to run it in properly before giving it a real go. Maybe next time

Sounds like youve done more miles than half of KB, not bad for a noob i recon !
Runnin out of gas is something most only ever do once (though have pushed boundaries) So were ya thrashin it or is it time for a tune up ??

Thrashing it most of the way, every so often I'd let it cruise at 90-ish to let it cool down. And yes I've done quite a few KM's, I love the bike. Anybody that says a 250 can't go places is talking shit. :niceone:

The Forgotten Highway has, I think, about 40K's of unsealed road. At the weekend I went to Tauranga on the Tauranga Direct road, that had about half a click of metal at the road works and that was enough for me. I went out of my way to avoid it on the way home. What's the general feeling about lose metal on roads. It gives me the horrors, but then I am a sook.:2thumbsup

Yeah she was leading, I was just trying to keep up :chase:

We weren't in a hurry - although it seems we probably should've hurried a bit more, seeing as it took us over 9 hours to get from New Plymouth to Auckland! Including dinner and breaks, of course.

Glad to help out a biker in need, and I got to do the road from Awakino to the top of Mt Messenger 3 times, so it's all good! :2thumbsup

Good story; The forgotten Highway really is a cinch. 13 km's of metal in better condition than my driveway - see attached pic taken while riding.

My first time over The Gentle Annie on Sunday - returning from a simply FAB Simply Red concert - now thats a ROUGHIE!

Oh yes, the joys of open road riding compared to pootling on a 250. Did exactly the same thing last year heading to Kinloch.....thought I'd make it there and BACK to the Tokaanu gas station. Oops.

Runnin out of gas is something most only ever do once
You'd think that, huh?
I used to run my first bike to the limit most times, and several times coasted into a gas station running on fumes, and once had to push it maybe 20m.
Never ran out of gas on the next two bikes, but ran out twice on my VFR750, both times vowing to never do it again. Once I had to call the AA to bring me gas; I was in town, but knew the nearest station was about 1.5km away, up hill and down dale, in full bike gear? Nup. Figured the AA would be quicker, but being the morning rush hour, it took about 35 minutes for the guy to show up.
Next time, I was very near work (and the gas station) but discovered I'd left my wallet at home. :shit: Had to go into work to borrow $20 from a visitor. :o
(Didn't learn from that either - two more times I filled the bike with gas, did the Aussie haka, no wallet.)
The VFR was a pain: for some dumb reason, the fuel pump works only when the engine is running, so if you run it dry, it's reluctant to start.
But the VTR was more of a pain: those 48mm carbs sucked gas with a prodigious thirst. Four times (4!!) I had an opportunity to fill up (including three times when the Orangey-Red LED Of Doom was illuminated), and each time I went, "Nah - I'll do it later!". Eventually, I was about 1.2 km from the nearest station, the bike started to splutter, and stopped within seconds, bone dry! I managed to coast most of the way to the nearest station, but the last couple of hundred metres was a killer, especially the last steep little bit. Fortunately, a panelbeater near the station was a TL rider, and took pity on me and helped me push it.
Haven't run out since then (getting on for 5 years), but I'd be hesitant to claim I'd learned my lesson. :o
