hey adam,
so what is the ride like before you do all the goodies to her?
i'll never forget my first tiki on a beemer.
i don't remember the 70's model it was,rode it very early 80's.

sweet ride, very gutless. very comfy.
considering its age very impressive. sits happy at 75/80 mph. 170 miles to a tank not including reserve.
looking a lot better already, got the big grooming today. + pipes off, polished and leaks on joins sealed. also replaced the trim around the windshield.
heads off at the moment getting re-sprayed but need to do the valves before they go back on tomorrow night.

The engine holds 2.5 litres with a filter change, or 2.25 without. The forks hold 320ml each, BMW reccomend a 5 or 10w oil.
The driveshaft holds 260ml.
I have the book here if you have any other questions.
Edit, the tappett clearance isint in this book, its just an owners handbook, i have a couple of haynes manuals at work for these, but i set my race bike tappetts to 4 thou on the inlet & 6 on the exhaust.

thanks heaps guys, if you come accross the fork and driveshaft oil please let me know.ATF(plain non new improved stuff) for forks if you're into budget motorcycling. Gearbox oil for the final which funnily enough the same a as the oil in the gear box. The 80-90 weight stuff.

Hypoid 80W90 gear oil.

Gearbox needs 800cc. Driveshaft needs 150cc and the bevel housing about 350cc. 2 x 1 litre packs should see you through.

I use Motul 5wt fork oil for the er.. forks

Don't forget the driveshaft splines!

once again a huge thanks to all who are helping.
got the valve clearances done tonight after work, plus cleaned the air filter, repaired a small tear in seat and a small crack in dash.
also put the freshly painted rocker covers back on.
had a friend round for dinner and their mouth dropped when i told them it was a 1987 bike. it is starting to look great.

i did not ever know that the gearbox, shaft and spline needed to be oiled independently so Bonez and MaxB i cannot thank you enough. needless to say there will always be a beer etc in Paparoa for you.

think i am all set to do the spline, shaft, gearbox.
need to do the fork seals with the fork oil and i know nothing about it???
also engine oil. not sure what kind of filter i need?

thanks again and if any can help further i will be stoked, i am already stoked so i guess even more so.

will post some pics when i finish the cosmetic stuff ( not much left to do, just a bit of touch-up on the stone chips etc and cleaning the wheels )

the only other issue is a squeaky kind of noise from the upper engine i think, but i do not plan to worry about it till the basics are done as it may go away anyway. and i suppose i need to strip and clean the carbs but that should not be a biggie.

had a look at the spline lube method, .looks sweet

hospitalfood

ok, the rear hub/ ( bevel drive? ) looks easy enough to lube.
think i need to drain gear box then pull to do spline lube with the molly grease ( what the fuck is that ) the re-attach gear box then fill box with lube. so far so good.
i can see where to drain the drive shaft but no idea where to re-fill with lube.
also have no idea where the engine oil filter is kept.....

fun fun fun.

fun fun fun.Look for a trianular shape cover held by three allen screws lower right front of the engine just above the sump gasket. May have oil cooler lines attached.

The oil filters come as hinged units so you can fit them without removing the bottom fairing. Neat eh! However I imagine you can get straight filters too. There is a guy in Nelson on Trademe who sells BMW stuff. I'll post a link when I find it. Very helpful.

Hi Adam

You can get the magic grease in a small pottle from a crowd that do BMW bits. PM me if you want the contact details.

To buy a tube is serious $$$$ and you dont need much eh.

Good luck ,she looks good!
