Anyone know much about wireless boosters?

wireless boosters, i've seen little satellite dish thingys,
and other little routers..

but google fails me and doesnt tell me how they work,

i need to extend the wireless range about 100m


anyone know anything about this kind of thing?

Line the inside of your helmet with tinfoil - I find that helps. :)

Short of fitting a bigger antenna I can't see how you'd up the wireless range. I doubt you'd be able to just up the signal strength without altering the original device significantly.

I managed to get full signal from my D-link router at about 30m with the wireless antenna. I never actually got to testing its range though, so I wont make any promises but one of the above is definitely worth a try.

In case the OP doesn't realise it, those antennas will only work on equipment which has an external antenna port (not all wireless equipment does).

gowifi.co.nz sells a lot of good gear (aerials, AP's).

Get a real router like an Engenius ECB-3220. Wireless aerials cost a bit of money and a $70 aerial can often do nothing for you so I recommend starting off with a good access point.

Depending what you need to do in regards to physical location. You may be able to extend your range simply by buying a couple $10 woks (frying pan thingy that looks like a satellite dish) and mounting them behind your existing antennas.

You can get wifi repeaters. Is this what you're talking about? Most people convert existing wireless routers into repeaters, but you can buy (somewhat) expensive dedicated repeaters as well.

Screw that, CAT5 cable will run that far happily enough, and you'll only need about $30 worth :)

Nope, 70 metres of wireless will be stupidly unreliable and slow, 70 metres of cable will race along... considerably faster than any internet connection.

Stick a $20 hub in at the end you want to connect the computers at, then you can plug like 7 computers in! Still a heap cheaper than any viable wiresless solution.

Yeah for that sort distance wired would be no problem. Then you know it will always be reliable. Cable through tree's etc seems to not be an issue and normal cat 5 seems to last no problem outside.

You should see our setup, 100m+ no problem.
