Anyone keen for a ride to Lake Sumner and back this Sunday comming. Might take in the Kowhai River between Leithfield and Marshmans Rd (the inland ford we often cross when heading between Sefton and Pryamid Valley) if there is not too much water. Will see what other interesting roads/tracks I can find as well.
Meet at the Peg at 9am. I'll contact DOC re the gate though it sounds like it can be ridden around.
Cheers Ryan

waht probs have you had?
Electric start one way clutch was poked when I got it. $400 for a new one which I've finally replaced.
2 broken clutch cases due to kickbacks from the kick start due to too advanced timing.
1 cracked R/H crank case due to some idiot before me not tightening the crank gear properly and locking the tab down properly.
1 broken kick start boss (bit the kick lever mounts on) due to the above advanced timing making the kick start slam into my foot every so often.
Had to replace the clutch a week after I bought it,the typical thing eh.
Broken side stand on the way to DB1K 09 along with the cracked clutch case.
Oh and a noisey 3rd gear.
So not too bad for around 120-130,000kms,12 owners and 23 years.

Was in there on the tredly a week ago. You can pretty easily ride around the gate that may be locked. The gate also open on the way in and out when we went through.
Might be keen for the ride - depends how sore I am feeling after Sat's ride.

Trust me,I've come close.
But I'm not the sort of person who can knowingly sell a problem to someone else.

hi chaps, just out of interest, what sort off kms would your ride cover. and time frame.
Check out this from a previous trip in there...
I’m going for a ride to Lake Sumner on Sat 07/10/06......
For those who haven’t been up that way before, here’s some distances for you …
Total round trip from BP Marshlands to Lake Sumner and back – 342km
Made up as follows …
Sealed road from BP Marshlands to 15km past Hawarden – 126km
Gravel Rd from here to Lake Taylor – 31km
Easy 4wd track from here to Lake Katrine – 8km
Harder 4wd track from here to Lake Sumner – 6km
The biggest hop between fuel stops is Waikari to Sumner and back – 136km
It’s possible you could get fuel at Hawarden, which would reduce that distance to 120km, but no guarantees on the fuel...
Another thread on the same trip estimates a quick in/out trip from Hawarden to be about 3 hours. So that's not counting the various route options from ChCh to Hawarden.
If I were at home I might be able to dig up a GPS track log to check with.

Looks like we have a few starters. Be good to catch up with some of you again, its been a while. Good luck with the bike Peril.
hi chaps, just out of interest, what sort off kms would your ride cover. and time frame.
This ride will be about 300km return. We almost always have a total average speed of 50kph (not moving average), i.e. this ride will take about 6 hours maybe 7 if we muck around a bit.
Thanks for the post TA. Wasn't planning on going through Waikari and I dont think any of those that have posted so far will have an issue with fuel. If anybody wont have enough fuel range it might be worth brining a small fuel container and dumping it near the start of the "good stuff".
TA you keen to bring the CRF and meet us Lake Taylor or similar?
Cheers R

Yep. Might unload a bit sooner than that though.
Though you might if you were keen :msn-wink: Maybe if extra fuel is needed you could make a couple of bucks by taking in a can of gas?

Yer a gentleman and a scholar. Right, well I guess I'll spend Saturday removing the indicators and mirrors then. The bulbs all rattled apart on the long ride back from our Nth Canty wanderings last year, and I haven't found a shop that stocks orange bulbs yet.

Do you think someone who has alot of mountain biking experience and road motorbiking experience, but who has never ridden a trail bike offroad before, be ok on a very generously loaned DR650?

You should be OK. My first trip up there was in the depths of winter, on my Funduro with road tyres. A video of that auspicious day is here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2L-jx88JAy8). It will be pretty greasy, be prepared to fall over at low speed, and get very wet and muddy (Bring warm clothes). Should be kick-ass fun!!

Don't worry Phoenix - we wont make you try out the puddles before the rest of us get there :D While gravel at speed on a motorbike is different from seal or riding a MTB I'm sure you will get the hang of it. Your most welcome to come along but bring some good wet weather gear and some poly pro, change of socks etc. If you do off in a puddle it is a long wet ride home.
I started this at lunchtime and had to run to a meeting. I see that Skinny has already mentioned the cloths thing.

Oww heck, the man on TV just said it was like 25 deg C in Christchurch today.
It sure wasn't like that up at the lakes.
The big bonus was slippery stuff is fun on the CRF. And there was no dust.
Good ride guys.

Well that was an interesting ride with the rain and all. I felt a bit like I had a cannon at a sword fight. I'm knackered today from hauling Tenzing around. I'll post pictures tonight.
Hope you enjoyed yourself phoenixgtr. From an adventure ride perspecive that was near the trail ride end of the spectrium. The gravel road stuff is closer to what we "normally" ride. Certaily different to road riding aye :msn-wink: You did well for a first time out.

lol, my partner went in there with the one we got from Ryan a couple of years ago. She enjoyed it.
If we had plenty of spare cash and room in the garage we'd have been interested in yours too. We miss that we bike.
But alas, to many regos is bad and so is the money hole involving my current motor rebuild on the DR650.

Right photo's time. You can see that things start of nice and sunny and then get slowly wetter and wetter. There is quite a good apple tree near the place where TA and SB left the van (see above the KTM 525):D There is something unique in the 5th photo - a third S10. Yes there was three S10's on this ride! Last photo - TA looking happy and dry (see next post...)

I would if you did not share your lunch and try to force your bubble bar thing down my throat, as it appears in the photo birdman.
Next time I go up there I think a dirtbike might be the order of the day. Might be able to get a bit further.
Good ride though, throughly enjoyed getting out again, cheers guys
