In the news just now...A Tanker has crashed on the Southern Motorway.
It is carrying a load of Ammonium Nitrate, which in itself is very dangerous, it's the stuff that was used for the Oklahoma Bombings.
Traffic was being diverted after a tanker believed to be carrying ammonia nitrate hit a lamp post on a bridge over the Southern Motorway in Auckland, police said today.
The incident happened in mid-afternnon on the Redoubt Road overbridge in Manukau City, South Auckland.
Police said there were no immediate reports of injuries.
Fire Service personnel were at the scene and road blocks with diversions had been established.

Ammonium Nitrate by itself isnt bad, but when you add diesel and but a charge through it, it becomes a 'low' explosive.

In WWII "amonal" was used as an incindiery load in bombs...mix of ammonium nitrate and aluminium powder if my memory serves me correctly and a tad of TNT too I think...seem to remember reading about it in my school chemistry textbook...hmmm these days such a book would be banned and the school locked down with gazillions of AOS dudes running everywhere like beheaded chooks....
