On Lake Road at 6.40am. I am pretty visible, Red bike, headlights on high beam with LED running lights...oh and a red jacket..geezer on a black cruiser just comes up to side road...am about 6 bike lengths away...looks at me and waltzes out...sound my horn...later go past him on Esmonde Road, wag my finger and he just gestures "WTF"...meet him in Ponsonby...I am filtering, he is in the left lane...and moves out in front of me and then indicates..doesn't seem to care.
Ironic he was wearing a Dayglo Vest for visibilty.
555 done
Incident No 2
Stopped at traffic lights...indicating left.
Some bum on a Honda wearing shorts and teeshirt comes up alongside me....mmm..I am turning left mate pointing to my bright mini indicators...err I didn't see that..."and you say car drivers are bad" I says.

Guy on a Ducati on Shelly's Beach about 2 cars back from Jervois. Decides it is a good idea to go onto the other side of the road and mount the pedestrian island...manages to get out and almost hits the car in front....he shoots off..somehow I meet him on Ponsonby Road...I politely told him that he was not setting a good example for motorcylist..."I can do what I like" he says...I agreed but said he was not setting a good example....he gives me the finger...

Be aware that those mini indicators - particularly the clear non tinted ones - can be very hard to see at times.
I know they are the trend these days, but i reckon they shouldn't be legal.

Good on the Ducati guy!
Wouldn't it be better to vent your frustration with the Council? After all, they are responsible for the dysfunctional traffic issues around the area in question. Shelly Beach Road has been made worse by the new lights and phase on Jervois Road. It was bad before but they somehow managed to make it worse.
Here's a tip GB: On the first right hand bend on Shelly Beach, do an "Illegal" left hand turn down Hackett St. Just check first for cops as they know people are really frustrated with the unnecessary traffic on Shelly Beach and are pinging people for this. It will shave at least 5 minutes off your commute.
Question though: Surely you don't sit in all the traffic on Shelly Beach Road... on a motorbike...

I was polite, was not frustrtated, just making a valid point like many bikers do to car drivers...and no...what do you expect in the morning with commuter traffic? Regardless, rider should not have gone on the other side of the road and mounted the pedestrian kerbed island...plus in his haste he almost collided with a stationary car...good on him eh?
Have travelled that route last few years and cannot see the issue.

No cause I don't worry about 5 minutes

I could not go any further as the Ducati rider at the time was in the next gap ahead just 2 car lengths from the turn. Being so close I did not see the need for impatience.

I struggling to believe that you're on a motorbike and choose to sit with stupid people on Shelly Beach Road and don't use your narrowness to get up to Jervois. You must be the only biker in Auck that does this.

Okay, I will say this again...I was behind the Ducati who was 2 cars back from Jervois...the island stopped him (and me) squeezing between the car that was right up against the island...this means that I had used my narrowness to get past the traffic upto this point...

I would have to agree, they are too small and too hard to see.
The fact they are clear makes it worse - a lot of people are not 100% sure it is in fact an indicator because it is wrong colour when off.
Heck on my cage, my front indicators are white bulbs in a tiny white glass cover... HEAPS of people misread them. Factory fitted though ;) so legal.

These are not that small...probably 2/3rds the original lens size and about the same for length and very clear and bright...

They may look bright in your garage... but when out in the real world, other traffic looking in your direction with the sun behind them shining directly onto you, may not notice that your indicator is actually flashing because the sunlight is making both of your white reflectors look bright anyhow. The flashing bulb isn't enough to stand out.

Incident 1:
You may be partially at fault. Clearly there was a motorbike on the side road, thus there is a possibility of accidental cutting in due to rider inattentiveness. Knowing this you should have been preparing yourself in case emergency braking is needed, and ideally would have been slowing down. If space permits, you'd be moving away from the sideroad (either by staying within your lane or to the adjacent lane). There should not be a major reason to be caught out or massively annoyed.
Incident 2:
No harm in letting him proceed first and then commit your left turn afterwards with a clear way. No annoyance required.
We always said it's invisibility. I'd say we're just not riding defensively.
Regardless of whoever is at fault, bike riders are the one kissing the ground. A right of way is not a right to die for.

That intersection is one of my favourites in the whole wide world!
My homeward commute often takes me up Shelley Beach, then I turn right at the top into Jervois. The thing is, the cars on Jervois ALWAYS queue across the intersection, gridlocking both Jervois and Shelley Beach. Gridlock is heaven to me, because it means all the cars in every direction are stuck fast as if they parked in setting concrete.
So I cruise up Shelley Beach in the left lane, turn right into Jervois across the bows of the gridlocked cars, weave between the intersection-blockers and filter to the front of the lights at Curran Street. One of the most predictably satisfying parts of my homeward journey.

Just be very careful honey... lots of people run that light. I've seen it MANY times and can only assume they are actually looking at the next set of lights on Curran St which is only about 50 metres along.

Yes i realise they are very popular and trendy at the moment. Doesn't change that i think that they are stupid and a backward step for road safety.
Just like Justin Timberlake is very popular and trendy at the moment. Doesn't mean his music is any good though, does it.

I seem to get all the noob lane splitters who don't get out of the damn way! I mean if I see a faster splitting bike behind me I'll let him go but I get all the L plate Ninjas and GN's wobbling along at 20 Ks in front and not moving over. Jeez look behind you people.
Oh and my other favourite are scroters that can only just do town speed limit screaming along in the middle of a lane doing 48.... Move the F over you sewing machine riding freaks or get a real damn bike already. The next one that does that to me, I'm going to follow it and when it parks I'm going to pick up their stupid little fart on wheels and throw it into the closest council rubbish bin.
I feel your pain Grahamee as non bikers cant tell these mensa candidates appart from real bikers who look where the hell we are going.

The accident was, I was lucky. Lights changed to green...had a YPVS at time so shot off as lane merges into 1...next thing see this guy on my left...I tend to trail my right leg...he caught my leg, I let go and I somersaulted about 75 metres in the air and landed on my back a few feet in front of a shop window and just missed a road sign..bike somehow landed a few feet from me and apart from being a bit bashed up, I rode it home...I could have been a lot worse off..' I sent the ambo's home..
Number plate, being perspex broke off so we had the number and about 7 witnesses. Guy initially claimed car was stolen and then tried too blame me but he got done for it...

Good point, sweetie-pie. I shall watch out for red-light runners if the traffic is ever moving when I go through there. :shifty:
So far the only person who has tried to kill me at that intersection was the truck in the queue who was frustrated it couldn't get through the gridlock, so deliberately tried to ram me when the lights changed. Oh the joys of being a biker! :2guns:

It's a sad fact of life that anyone on the roads can be a drip (plonker or wanker) and this includes bikers. As for the indicator brightness, I've had several cars pull out on me as I approach with my headlight on and on a white bike. They're just not looking for or expecting bikes. They're only looking for cars or anything bigger that is percieved as a threat. Seems people change thier minds about bikes not posing a threat after they've had thier cars cut in half by one.
Also... alot of my mates thought they were so clever and safe that it would never happen to them..some got to live through the accident.

driving back from Airport in the old mobility van...heard a crackling 250cc sound and blow me down this plonker uses the "cycle' lane to undertake me (I was doing about 50ish) and at the same time his mate overtakes me on my right.
I toot my horn and get the "what are you on about gestures"...obviously thinks he was allowed to use the cycle lane to pass moving traffic....
