The longer his sentence the more likely it is he'll become institutionalised and gain that afrementioned street cred. Do nothing and he's not going to be 'rehabilitaed' is he? Where's the middle ground between shooting him and putting him on a pedestal?

I doubt any sentence will change him; the damage was done before he got to school age probably. I'd like to know more about his background to try and pinpoint what went wrong where. If we could learn that then we might find a way to prevent it happening in the future.
