I have just installed a radar detector on my R1 - and as there isnt much info on the net (and because I was a little bit proud of myself when it all worked) I have put the result on the net... if anyone is interested, here is the link:

enjoy - and let me know if you have any suggestions, questions or comments

That's gonna save me a bit of thinking :niceone:

Thanks!

Easier option:

Get a radar stem stand that fits in the head stem hole of the bike....run you negative earth off the terminal of the battery - run your swtiched positive off the main engine fuse box.  Run the power cable under the fuel tank popping out just by the head stem.

Easy - took 5 minutes to do.  That way it is simple to take your radar detector in and out.  you only need a 50cm cord to your helmet.

Much easier running off the battery and main fuse.

Note - done on the same 2002 R1.

Head Stem Stand is much easier and it is transferrable bike to bike.

Pictures later (if I can be fecked)

Where do you get the stem stands from? I have seen the ones from radardirect - but I dunno about the price!

Make them....any fabrication shop should be able to do it......

I am waiting on my Partners old man (still) to produce a prototype from his engineering workshop

can't argue with that... I'll have to get around to ordering the detector at some stage before I worry about the mount for it first though!

Gonna go for an escort passport 8500... looks like the best option for a bike...

One day I'll get those blinder jammers too... :D

nice - what did the stem stand end up costing you? If you have extras and wanna sell one let me know!

Otherwise -->
I found a site that looks pretty decent (http://www.motorcycleradar.com) to order the 8500 from ($299 US), they have package deals where you get the detector, a mount (they have stem stands and bar or mirror mounts - mount on the inside of the mirror fixing - looks pretty decent - $54US - though all their stands are the same price) and a thing called a screamer so that you are alerted without needing a headset attachment etc (there is a link to a review on the site somewhere) - not sure about that one yet though.

Either way they have pretty good prices and the shipping isn't terrible - package works out to 780 NZD inc shipping... of course it's cheaper if you get the bits individually and skip out on the screamer...

hmmm

Does the centre mount obscure any instruments on the R1?  It would have on my Blackbird and I made a mount to fit the back of the screen.  It's worked well in the 9 months I've had it on.  I figure I'm going to need it on the 1000 mile/24 hours Grand Challenge next month:o   Is anyone else other than Mangell and me going to do it?

NOt at all - sits over the top of the fuel tank - you are higher - the only thing it obscures is your ignition and yoke - plus it is adjustable

Has anyone with a solid mounted detector have it die from excess vibes?
Valentine 1 told me theirs would be fine, but I mounted iy on a floating mount to be safe.

My riding partner has had his Uniden die twice on his GSX-R 1000. He has a solid bracket mounted off the inside of his screen or mirror bolts, can't remember which.  Mind you, a Uniden is at the bottom end of the range and the contruction is fairly basic.

Yeah, i got a Bel 985 a few months ago after getting too close to 100 points :o

I just got out the multimeter and found two wires in the wire box between the fork sliders that had 12v and turned on and off with the ignition switch. Then i just got some little piggy back connectors that tap into the wire. Works sweet and i only needed about 50-60cm of cable.

I put some velcro above the speedo on my bike to hold it there and have a safety cable hooked over one of my mirrors to stop it from falling off.

Already paid for itself about twice. Only problem is not having a plug for headphones, but i might wire one in.

I'd be interested in seeing this or knowing where you got it, if you have a camera could you post it up please. I just bought a Valentine 1.

I have a pasport 8500 with a H.A.R.D system which is a wirless set up in the helmet. There is a sender unit pluged into the detecter and a reciever unit in the helmet (battery) this hides in the lining and a rather bright LED light sits by the nose piece.
I find this set up bloody good it has saved me many a time, as it should for the bloody price you pay.
I mount the detecter from a bracket easly made up from the mirror mounts this set up I had on my 1100 Guzzi and is now on the Firestorm. This way I can have it in my truck, work van aswell.
The H.A.R.D system can allso be used with the V1 and latest Bell detecters.

my escort has recently tripped out and won't let me use the buttons anymore. really need to send it back to the states before the warranty runs out so they can fix it for me. Possibly due to getting bounced around on my screen (suspension on GSXR's being rock hard as it is).

by the way dave... when are you going to change that 'cage dweller' tag to its true form now? (lets see some pictures of it eh!?)

Howzit CK,

How do you find the performance of your 8500? How much did you pay for it from the US?

Oh yeah BTW what suspension settings do you ride around on?

Contemplating getting bat vision for my baby.

what can I say dave, a little bird told me :)

performance is pretty good although i've never run with another detector, the stories i hear from uniden users give me the impression it does a better job. Got it off the net for $299 US (+ shipping etc)

funny you should mention the suspension settings actually (I'm on stock at the moment) because i've just noticed a little feeling of instability from the back end when cornering (although funnily enough when i pushed it I couldn't feel it). It was quite noticeable on Tuesday when i had a pillion on and I coudl feel it last night too. I was thinking about adding a little more preload and maybe a click or compression damping to the rear shock. perhaps its my rear tyre showing signs of the track day in mid Jan?

But other than that, i haven't had any reason to complain about the setup. didn't have any trouble with it at pukekohe and it would let me change lines and make small mistakes without any drama at all. My neck is giving me grief but thats not suspension related as my wrists are ok.

ck: $299 for the 8500 is excellent buying. it is a top line detector from all accounts. quick send it back while it's covered by warranty. of interest did You have it clipped using the car sunvisor attachment or suction cupped using the car windscreen style mounting? or do You have a stalk? just interested as I'm unsure as to the best way to mount one & I don't want mine to die of vibration.

I have my pasport on a bracket that I mounted of the mirror bolts (inside) and I find that it moves around a bit (up & down motion) A couple of mates said "that moves around a lot" But IMHO thats a good thing cos when you fix somthing ridged then it will not sock up the vibs which means something is gona brake.

how long have you had yours like that? i assume it's still going well too?

I have my 8500 on the top of my tankbag on both of my bikes. I have a sort of harness thingy that clips onto the D-rings on the tankbag, then the detector velcros onto the harness. Hubby made the harness - he's a very versatile chap. I'll keep him on till Ben calls for me.

On his 1100S the hubby has his on a bracket he made of a pushbike headlight bracket. The bracket fits onto the tripleclamp. It's very solid. On his GS1200SS it's mounted off the fairing frame, on the mount for a radar detector adapted. A mate with an R1 (hi Bugsplat!!) used a fish-slice minus the handle, mounted somewhere round the instruments.

In the car we use the suction cups on the windscreen.

We both have Escort 8500's. Have had them for a good couple of years now. Had a Uniden but it's not that good really, lots of false readings. Can copy the article we did for BRM comparing them. If anyone's interested PM me and I'll send the text.

Bout a year (8-9000km) When I say that it bounces up and down it is not a lot worse than the car (windsheld) when ya hit the bumps.
I made a mount on a mates GS1200ss the same way but cos theres so much room behind one of them things the mount was very short therfore hardly moves

yeah, i use the suction cups and it does jump around a bit (takes exact positioning to avoid the brake reserviour and so i can still see the dash).
I'm planning to get a mate whos into boats to do me a carbon fibre shelf for it mounted like dangerous'. As he says, a bit of damped vibration isn't so bad in keeping it alive. I intend to have a velcro base for it to sit on the shelf
