Left Aucks on trusty steed at 6am, Saturday 22nd, Two short stops on the way, for a fag and a coffee, saw me at Lake Otamangakau at precisely 10:15. The first five pound trout was laying at my feet, flopping around, by midday. Numbeers two and three were on the bank by 3pm.
Two sets of German tour-bikers came along. Frau Hintzmeudler, for that was her name, hauled in a six-pounder to add to the score.
A quick call to one of my new-found friends in the area showed he and whanua were free for the night. We got there (me, Germans, and couple of other tourists who had happened by...and just happened to have two doz, chilled Corona in the chillybin, arrived at my mate's place to find the smoke house up and running and waiting for the introduction of four beautiful trout.
And so, great ride down...even better back, tonight (won't mention the travel time and the short impromptu go with some shiela driving a very snappy Ferrari (albeit not that well) :--)) cos Scumdog might pass the info on)....six new friends, and one hell of a party.
Got three more nice fish today. Just split them, about half an hour ago. Salt, brown sugar, sprinkled rum, and they'll be in the smoker tomorrow, for another impromptu, hot smoked trout, party.
You get to do this when you can find time to stop yourself from just riding, but 'use' the a really great ride for a specific outcome other than just the ride.
I'm probably going back down next weekend. Anyone interested in tagging along is welcome. Just pm me. ELT will be 6am at Te Atatu on-ramp. All you need is a change of clothes and a towel and soap. Accom will cost you $40 per single or $55 per twin. Bedding supplied.
For any hunters interested, there's deer-aplenty within walking distance. I'll give you all the gen you need for that. You might even get to wack a Captain Cooker.
Cheers.
David.
