Having not experienced a COLD DUCK before, the comments from everybody who has is that it's a totally awesome weekend.:gob: Went past the venue yesterday on a quiet ride and it looks mint.
I'm getting very tempted.:wari: According to the new website prepaid tickets for discounts, badges etc. must be purchased by the end of April.

You'll have a blast, it was my first time last year and even though it was raining it still was a great weekend, ride home is always a laugh.
You have to get tickets off the website and they will email you with a reference # for paying and it's all go from there. Should be a good one again this year can't wait....

Don't know about doing the two nights again, i'm getting old !
Was a bit of humour when i unpacked the tent (that i had loaned out a year before) to find it had been put away wet and rotted ggrrrrr !
Waking up in the wee hours sunday morn to find we were literally floating around on the air bed wasn't so much fun !

Hey does anyone have a 2007 and/or 2008 cold duck badge they are willing to part with or sell. This will be my third time, however the other two I went to I paid at the gates and didn't get to the stand in time to buy one etc etc. Would like to add them to the collection of other rally badges. I will definitely be getting a 2009 badge tho.
The mud last year was a hoot to go across, especially in front of the kitchen and toilet block. The ZX10 was idling across with the back wheel spining freely, with me trying to push along with my feet and steer in a straight ish line. Nothing like a challange. Feel sorry for the guys that fell off. Its a bitch to lift a bike up when everything around it is slippery as shit.
Bring on the Booze and tits, and lots of bikes.

The Sunday is Mothers day is it not?
I have floated the suggestion of going and got told by my daughter that we've been away on bike trips the last 2 mothers days (consider myself told off :spanking:).
Cold Kiwi is around Fathers day, guess being the father I might be able to swing that one in my favour.

Good news Gibbo, = I wouldn't worry about food too much unless you are accustomed to cheese and crackers every 5 minutes. The food available is top notch, good value and fast. Of course SOME peeps do bring the cheese as well - which is all good!

I am still planning on going down to the rally. I expect to be there early afternoon on Friday. I am not happy with the forecast, but I don't think they are that accurate on tomorrows weather, let alone several days away.
Last year I almost didn't go down to the Magpie Madness Rally due to the forecast heavy rain and gale force winds. I decided to go anyway and the weather was fine, completely dry in fact. The wind picked up a little on Saturday morning, then it became calm again. I was almost home on the Monday before I encountered any rain. I would have been pissed off if I hadn't gone and had missed my first motorcycle rally/trip to the South Island/ferry crossing.
A little rain shouldn't be too big a deal anyway - though I don't think I will camp on the lowest part of the camp grounds. High ground sounds like a good idea.

Not worried about the weather, will ride down on Saturday morning regardless. Its only water right :-)
Need to take care on where to park tho' as the Beemer is not exactly an off-roader.
Anyone got a drawing on where the KB's gather ?

Long may this weather continue!!!!
Well the weather looks less than ideal, but if I ride down early Friday morning it will probably be OK for the ride - turning crappy afternoon/evening. Saturday is looking like it might not be too bad.
I am tempted to give it a miss, but I think I'll take a couple of HTFU pills in the morning and head down. I'll take my wet weather gear and I guess I'll find out if my tent is waterproof (it SHOULD be). I am making a check list of stuff to remember to take - hopefully I'll have everything that I really need.
My pics from the last rally (3 months ago) I went to are here:

Went over to Bills (sinfull) for a "get pissed" session on sat arvo and much to my suprise found out that plans were afoot...The plan was to get pissed at the cold duck instead of sittin on our lonely arses at home. So texted the wife, said we were goin then came back home grabbed a bit of warm stuff for the night...soon after Bill and Heidi turn up in their van and off we go...
Got absolutely pissed up at the cold duck....dammned good company and some real good fires...one issue I had was that little pyromaniac leprechaun wanting to throw all the pallets on, cos man it got hot at times round the fire...
Gota few hours sleep then packed up to go back home...just as well we were in the van cos it pissed down on the otherside of the gorge...musta been some sorry arses on some of the bikes, but hey, thats what ya do eh....
Great Rally....I will be back again...:2thumbsup

It was a goody alright. Tummy was playing up but enjoyed the Saturday all the same. Did the mothers day thing and popped in to see the folks. Caught up with a bro. Then off down a few wee back roads home then a soak in a nice hot bath when I got home. Got real bitter from Dannivirke home with some heavy rain so the tent etc are hanging up to dry.
On the way to the rally I bumped into Cowboyz and NZSarge planning a secret ride and not a 100 yards down the road bumped into Tony, a chap I use to ride with in the 80s/90s, on his 1200 lead sled. Followed him on some ramdon routes to Wiapawa using his GPS. When I say ramdom I mean it. Should have convinced him to tag along behind Gerble.

Got up to still clear skies saturday and a Shafty late' and thaw out around the fire.

Well what can I say …….. Being a pillion (thanks to the boys in blue) you have a lot of time to think. And I have come to the conclusion that this weekend was a most enjoyable one. This is hugely to the company that we had over the 2 days.
This is how I can remember by what you did, said or acted, so here is my interpretation
Shafty – Orange glasses and liquor land paper bag, classy look to hide that stoney''s however Busted did break his bottle out later and done a lap or 2 around the fire
Peter – ER6 a top man say no more lol
Winston 101 – impressed that you traveled so far from lil ole Invercargill, you have good stamina my friend
Kevin – well your perseverance is impressive, you got me in the end and well me and camera’s don’t mix easily so well done you cheeky bugger
Gin Gin – it’s always cool to meet someone who can give shit & take it too. How’s the chair?? nice photo by the way :)
Eugene –don’t hide the Kawa away it’s only dust
Mark H –I never learnt so much about torches, wattages, kryptonites and megabytes it all started sounding the same it was starting to do my head in, surprisingly very funny cheers lad
Black sheep – Alan u drunken bugger lol .... smoke wateva
Sinful - “you must step over the wooden batten” lol see you at the track on the 675
Sels & Gareth - My apologies for mistaking one of ya’s for shafty, it was the glasses
Dave “on the hill” – You & Busted “Tui Man” stirring each other that’s what rallies are all about :2thumbsup
Bonez – a giffae & blue mug that was a boomerang
Chancey – Thanks chick for introducing us to everyone there were so many it was fun. And also texting me in the mornings, that was a good plan too
we were lucky to have a brilliant weekend a good weekend like that comes down to the company so boys n girls until the next rally, Cold Kiwi, Cold Duck 2010…..or we will see you out on the road or at the track…… keep smiling it’s wickedly contagious

What a great weekend!
I counted 8 cop cars & 1 speed camera van on the way down - mainly (all but 1) between Matamata & Taupo. On the way home I counted 8 cop cars & 2 camera vans - I almost got in trouble with the last one, he was pointing a laser in my direction & I was accelerating when I spotted him, closed the throttle and was doing under 120 when I spotted him so luckily he didn't give chase (cause I can't outrun much).
I had some rain on the way to the rally and more on the way home, but the weather on Saturday at the rally was f'n great!
I am a bit wiped out by the 3 day weekend and over 5 hours travelling each way, but I have started sorting my pics.
For those that weren't there and are worried about the 'Cold' part of the 'Cold Duck Rally' - ya should have been there, the cold wasn't a problem!

Headed off in the rain expecting the worst. Went thru Whakatane overnite in Napier. Bit chilly to site but weather turned out brilliant :2thumbsup . Wonder how many didn't go cos of the forecast. Only KB'rs spoke to were Winston and Froggy. Looked for the others but couldn't find any. Camped by this Guzzi which won best european. Great weekend. Hope the Brass turns on the weather as good as this was.

Load of soft whimps I reckon  to be fair I was teased unmercifully about it up to the moment I left the BP metro in Palmie and nearly folded
Soooo glad I went even if my toes were a little chilly at 5am Saturday ( I know 'wear more clothes in future' and 'toughen up')
Only KB'rs spoke to were Winston and Froggy. Looked for the others but couldn't find any.
Shame, there was this tiny little fire over by the river and a few little souls huddled around it (see pics by Mark H).
Will have to fly a KB/CD flag at the kiwi so you can find us
There were so many poms there at one point we nearly put some Union Jack boxers on Bonez pole at one point but they would have ended up in the fire no doubt

On the way to Wellington Friday, weather crap until the micro climate at Kapiti, cleared up and saw a few bikes laden heading north,so assume they were on the way, into the city and shitty asabout 6.00pm,at 10.30pm a beautiful clearish night,no rain hardly at all on way home.
If people pre book you take the chance on weather and go anyway,or wait till the day and pay extra at gate.At least if ya prepay you will be sure you need to go lol,or forfeit the money.Peed me off not going after paying but no point if doc says not good idea, and next day feeling crappy, side effects lasted till mid arvo, but another one will come round soon.

Hey guys,
I'm in charge of the website for the cold duck and would really appreciate any photo submissions that you may have taken during the weekend :)
I've uploaded a few that I took, but as I wasn't able to make it on Friday, I'm missing quite a bit :(
If you have any photos you would be happy to have hosted on the site, feel free to send them my way at arowin (at) gmail (dot) com and I'll load them up :)
For all those that couldn't make it, it was an awesome night :)
Cheers
After a frantic couple of evenings work getting the HID and the radar Detector installed I was all packed and ready to go early Saturday morning. Woke up at 6.00am to the sound of hail and rain on the bedroom window... (awwww FFS I thought... this will be fun)
Hardened up with a belly full of baked beans and toast I tore off down the Southern MW only to find that the rain dried up and it was even warm enuff to strip off the xtra layers at Tokoroa... yay
Arrived at the site at 1.30 or so in fine but coolish weather. Found a wee spot for the beemer and next minute was met by Shafty, Sesun1 and Gareth51... cheers! Said hi to Chanceyy and a few others )soz forgot your names but not your faces.
Time to talk bikes and sup a few. The Green ginger wine hit the spot as did the bourbons. Got to meet a bunch of KB'ers and all very friendly as well.
Somehow missed the wet T (was it on Friday night?) Had a few bevies and burnt some pallets yay . Headed to bed moderately early with the ear plugs in.
Met another couple of guys on Sunday that I had ridden with on the Rusty Nuts previously so it was a great weekend.
Headed home in the sun, all turned to crap over the Napier-Taupo and didn't really fine up till close to Dorkland.., then it started raining again just after I shut the garage door.
Good to meet you all, the Cold Kiwi is next I guess so will see you there :2thumbsup

What great fun the Cold Duck rally proved to be - this was my second year. I headed up the South Island Thursday collecting 3 friends along the way and we reached the site on Friday afternoon. A group of about 10 of us met up and promptly built a shelter from firewood and tarps which is becoming our tradition.
Doc and Goblin found me fossicking for lengths of timber - great to meet you and I was sorry not to catch up again later. At least you got a prize Goblin - nothing at all for the Furtherest Travelled this year. :shit:
Sels1 and Gareth led me over to the dissolute KB group where it was excellent to finally meet some more KBers. We need a flag or something team. I'm hoping to see you all again at South Island rallies as time passes.
Weatherwise, despite the conditions elsewhere we had a sunny if coolish trip north in the SI, only meeting rain in the Wairarapa. The rally itself was dry and pretty windy on Friday night - Saturday morning which I know all about because my tent tried to leap into our fire.
The band FM was top-class, a very impressive unit and at times it was like being at a rock concert. Have to confess being up the front in the mosh pit giving my failing hearing more grief. Worth it though. Saw Chancey is the same locality.
I'll post an email report I wrote this morning of the trip back.
Winston001
12th May 2009, 14:33
Yes it was an excellent rally particularly as the only spot of inclement weather was the wind at the site on Saturday. Gave me an opportunity to reinforce and rebuild our shelter which proved to be an excellent structure for us. Jeff did try to burn it down on Saturday night but I think Maurice arrived in time.......
Nice high speed run on Sunday away from Waipawa through to Woodend after a cheeky guy on a Buell passed me. Four of us pushing through 140 - 160k but then I was on my own and back to a more sane pace. Some rain on the way to Wellington, a cop put his disco lights on on the Hutt Motorway for me but must have decided the 4wd in the other lane was to blame.....
Caught the 2:00pm ferry with quite a few other bikes including Red Devils from Nelson. Looks like a new crew, patches were still shiny.
Warmly welcomed by friends in Blenheim where a much needed shower washed the rally smoke and grime off. Topped off by delicious pumpkin and curry soup. Up at 6 on Monday and away by 7 am, still darkish and bloody cold, and frosty. It took quite a few kms to settle into riding again with a bitter southerly wind but at least the sun was shining.
Having witnessed Jeff take one for the team at Hawarden, a steady 110kph was endured.....whenever I remembered. Attempted to visit an old mate about 11:00am in Christchurch but he'd just headed into work so back on the road after warming up courtesy of Subway in Papanui.
I have no idea of the air temp but through the entire trip the Duc ran at 69 degrees, moving up to 71 briefly in North Canterbury. Normally its about 82 operating temperature. Dang it was cold. :cold: I had on almost all of my gear except the wets.
Upon reaching Timaru the day had advanced leaving about 4 hours daylight to reach Invercargill so instead of stopping for some hot coffee, I had a cold milkshake.
The sun had disappeared under heavy overcast and conditions to the south were looking rather gloomy so on with the wet weather gear. At this point the zip on the jacket ripped out leaving some minuscule plastic domes to hold everything together for the next 450k. I paid good money - $12.95 at Mitre 10 - for this gear so I was tres chagrined, you just can't get quality these days. :gob:
I finally met the rain at Oamaru and from there south it became a journey of endurance. Fortunately the bitter chill wind was light and the main problem was spray from vehicles. Snow on the Kilmog. I stopped every hour to walk around and warm up but each time it only took three minutes on the bike to become cold again.
The sun gave up its uneven struggle after Dunedin and everything went black. Riding from there through to Mataura was a challenge having to guess where the road went at times and even being passed by three cars. The helmet visor was continually blurred by rain and road spray which clung more persistently at low speeds.
Happily from Mataura south the rain fizzled out and the road was wide enough to pick the edges against the lights of oncoming traffic. I think I rode the last 4 hours on adrenaline because I'm still dazed today and cold despite sitting almost on top of my office heater.
Reached home at 7:55pm just short of 13 hours on the road. Michele had turned the heater on, placed a lovely meal in the oven, and made the house welcoming. She is a gem.
Nothing worth doing is easy. It was good to get away from our normally pampered lives and face the challenge of going to the Cold Duck. I'm glad we were all there and we had a great time. Thanks for your company everyone.

And thanks everyone for your kind comments. It's appreciated. People here think its a bit crazy to do something moderately dangerous and in extreme weather. I can't really explain it to them so maybe that's the attraction of KB - people who do understand.

Purely as a suggestion I wouldn't deliberately camp in a hollow at the Cold Duck unless you want to. For one thing cold air sinks and camping in a hollow where the coldest air gathers.....
Also if it rains, low spots tend to get wet and stay wet. Not that this hollow is an obvious damp spot, but something to consider. It rained plenty in 2008.
If the band noise isn't a problem then camping near the firewood makes sense. If instead a bit of distance is welcome then the high point to the east - as suggested above, is a good area too. So long as there is enough level ground for everyone.

Just like the trip to the duck, after woodville, it pissed down with rain all the way back to wellytown. Thank god for all the layered clothing and warehouse pvc rain proof trousers and jacket.
Was awesome meeting all of you, its good to put some faces to the names, and to meet new people.
Ive finally ordered new glasses to replace the ones I broke on the Friday night. Was a good thing really, as my glasses needed to be replaced about three years ago as my eyesight has changed dramatically.
Would be a great idea to fill up that hollow early next year, and have a CD/KB cordined off area. There are guys in the east side of the site that have an area taped off, should do something similar and hang up a KB flag or something.
Now who is going to the Cold Kiwi, as setting up a group area is alot more easily accomplished there. Definitly bringing the toys this year. Hopefully going to take the scooter and the AG, just have to convince someone to drive the car lol.

the hollow is also nicely sheltered from the wind that was howling a bit on the fri nite, was not cold esp since the fire was kept well banked. Little smurf has excellent pyromanic skills sure had it going in short order on sat morn

the hollow is also nicely sheltered from the wind that was howling a bit on the fri nite, was not cold esp since the fire was kept well banked. Little smurf has excellent pyromanic skills sure had it going in short order on sat morn
I was up on the high ground last yr .. but preferred the hollow :)
will see wot I can organise for next yr re roping off that area ..
Fair enough, it is a nice spot. You are right about the wind - I spent all Saturday morning rebuilding the traditional shelter our group builds out of tarpaulins and firewood sticks to stop it getting blown away.

Mate are you still after last years Cold Duck Badge? I have a spare you can have (I PM'ed ya a few months back) Shafty

As noted, main things that you will need are:
Tent, sleeping bag, camp roll, warm clothing, and a torch. Forgot to mention, bring a camera.
Eftpos onsite at the bar, food and drinks can be bought onsite.

BUGGER!
I was planiing on attending this year's Cold Duck again - but of all the weekends it just happens to be the exact same weekend that the Rally of New Zealand is on.

Damn thing is now only a once every 2 years event to so I really can't miss it.
I guess I'll be skipping this years Cold Duck.

Me and a mate are going up on XR 250's taking a bit of a detour from Tinui (across gravel :gob: )
Anyone is more than welcome to join us, otherwise, see you there.

What time are you thinking of leaving? We are only on road bikes so we may leave you when it comes to gravel (we're brave, but not that brave).

Cold Duck tickets bought and enroute. Looking forward to it. Never been tenting with the SV before. I've slept with her plenty of times though.
