'89 Vtr250 rear shock

My girlfriend recently bought a '89 vtr250 and the rear shock seems to 'creek' when going over your average bump. Im not sure if its the shock itself or just one of the joins needing a bit of a lube.
Would it be cheaper to get the shock rebuilt or to buy a fairly decent condition second hand 1?
